alright I have looked through this topic. I personally have no problem with textures, and I believe the problems arise because of anisotropic filtering.

if you turn it on, PC is going to slow down, but textures look much better, sometimes in your video cards settings this option may be turned off by default though. or set to low values.

still, I dont get why ME1 has texture quality settings, while lacking anisotropic filtering one. and ME2 is just the reverse...

Déjà vu?

EDIT: I tried setting DetailMode to 4 instead of 2 in Coalesced.ini, but it didn't seem to help (if you try this, or edit any .ini file for that matter, do use Notepad++ or a similar editor, and make sure to backup the file first). I also tried just adding "DetailMode=4" to GamerSettings.ini, but still no better textures. I think it's just the way BioWare made it - they didn't make better textures for the PC version than the 360 version.

***This probably only works for ATI cards***

I stumbled upon this thread today and...well, I think I have a solution. Someone mentioned Jack's tattoos, so I used them as a sort of a benchmark. I'm using an ATI HD4650 with Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM (I know, I know, it's a waste), Vista 32-bit. So, I was playing FarCry a couple years back and I had shrubs jumping all over the place. It made the game unplayable. So I was directed to this program called ATI Tray Tools, and upon messing around in the tweaks section, it solved my problem. So anyway, this is a side view of Jack's tattoos without the tweaks.

Note the blurriness in the arm. After tweaking, Jack's tattoos look a lot better.
http://img38.imagesh...11/46183967.png

This makes a noticeable difference in the texture quality.

So, how to tweak it. First go to http://www.guru3d.co...ti-tray-tools-/ and download ATI Tray Tools. Once it's installed and everything, right-click on the red diamond-shaped icon in your tray. Go to tweaks --> standard tweaks. Choose the Direct3D tab if it's not already selected and check the "Force Mip-Map Filter" box. You can alt-tab out of the game to change it on the fly to see the results better. The Geometry instancing option got rid of my dancing foliage, just an FYI. I really hope this works for everyone else so I didn't make this account for nothing.

Okay, I thought I was having the same problem as everyone else complaining herem the heads look better than the armors for me, but holy crap, they don't look nearly as ugly as the first pick you posted.  They look more like the second pic, but when you look close you can see that the lines are all jagged on the armor and nothing is quite as crisp as it should be.  Are people here having my problem or one like the pictures above?

For me (and I imagine its a bit different for everyone), Shepard's armor looks okay (most of the time) except for the occasional clipping issues, but her casual dress looks pretty crappy and so does everyone else's armor. I remember having hIgh res textures in ME1, so I'm dubious of the theory that it's intentional, but BioWare's apparent policy of silence on this issue isn't really helping.

Also, I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but the (newly added) support for ME2 via the nVidia control panel does absolutely nothing no matter what I do with the settings, and nHancer seems to be confusing version 196 with 169 and won't even let me into the program anymore. I've tried everything to enchance the graphics, everything from the UT3 workaround (which didn't work, I assume because I bought ME2 on Steam) to nHancer to nVidia. Nothing has ever worked.

Nvidia pulled the 196.75 drivers due to issues with fan speed. You should try upgrading to 197.13 or rolling back to an older version.

Known issue. Bioware doesn't care. I doubt we'll be seeing ME2 get any better treatment than DAO, and DAO still has well-known gamebreaking bugs after 5 months.

When did 197 come out? I updated my drivers less than a week ago, and windows is telling me it can't find anything more recent than what I already have; nVidia's website seems to be describing the driver I just installed but I suppose it's worth checking again. Oddly, device manager reports my version as "6.14.11.6906" and dates the driver 11/6/07, which doesn't make sense to me because my nVidia CP has options for games released after 2007. I've only thought to look for drivers a handful of times, but one of those times was last week when I was shocked at the prevalence of low-res textures in ME2. I've also been trying to force AA (surprise, surprise) but that has never worked either.

EDIT:

Everything seems to be kosher now, system-wise at least. About to check to see if the nVidia CP has any effect. Device manager is now reporting the correct driver version, which I assume is a start. I must have downloaded the wrong dirver or something.

I'm having a lot of trouble with armor textures.

I made a little picture so you could see it. It's jacob's armor: img202.imageshack.us/i/coolanduncool.png/

Some parts of the armor seem to have lower resolution than others (and notice that the pattern design is geometric so i thought it would give more trouble.. but it's viceversa) It looks like a chunk of blurriness. Sometimes I think it's plating, sometimes it looks like rubber... I don't know.

I've tried all. Edited ini files. Played with CCC settings (I have an ATI 4800 series and apparently it doesn't support supersampling, i know it dosn't have to do with texture detail, but i'm having more than one problem with ME2, jaggedness is one of them....) I downloaded ATI Tray Tools and now I'm going to try the mipmap forcing stuff Mister Sandman mentioned.

I've also noticed that except Miranda's face, my shepard's face texture looks blurry! My Shep has freckles and they look like a mess :/ But the rest of the face, lips and eyebrows especially, look fine. So i'm very confused, I don't know if it's because the textures are intended to work this way or if it's my card or what...

Meh.

console ports...
When the game has to be made to run smoothly on a console with 256 MB of texture ram and they have to make their face textures shiny for their precious trailers and advertising, they have to severely cut down on texture quality for everything that isnt immediately apparent or constantly in view.

They hope the plebs won't notice too often and keep silent about it.

Redoing their textures for the pc version or god forbid having 2 independant dev studios to make a proper pc version would cost more money.
Their artists and some of their programmers may still make games out of their love for it, but the company and EA couldn't give two ****s about it.

Since the market is so big and oversaturated and their console market is so big , you shouldn't be hoping for any change until the next generation of consoles eventually is released.

Your best bet is to support Valve and other pc developers and wait for the cheap sloppy ports from all the 'me too!' companies end up in the bargain bin.

Quoting Homer ;) :
Homer: [stops] Herman, how could you? We've all thought about
counterfeiting jeans at one time or another, but what about the
victims? Hard-working designers like Calvin Klein, Gloria
Vanderbilt, or Antoine Bugle Boy. _These_ are the people who
saw an overcrowded marketplace and said, "Me too!"

No. They did this for Dragon Age II but the Mass Effect team doesn't seem to care as much for quality on PC. There are some unofficial texture mods in this thread: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/128/index/5314761

Doesn't look like a graphical glitch of any kind. They just didn't include high res textures for all of the bodies.

So lets get this right, you're complaining and saying its ****nig pathetic that you have made a change on your PC, that has affected the game quality?
At a rough guess, I'm going to say youve updated your video card drivers since you last played the game. Am I correct?

Try adding these lines to My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame\\Config\\Gamer Settings.ini:

bEnableHighPolyChars=True
EnableHighPolyChars=True

Might help.

Ahh, the old caveat of fixing one thing screwing up another thing....

I can't remember when it exactly happened, but my ME2 texture-quality experience took a noticeable nosedive sometime early on (first or second playthrough), and I'm not sure which update/patch/modification/tweak did it, but things starting looking real ugly.  I have an NVidia card (GTX 470) and I keep updating my drivers when new versions come out. I play a wide variety of games, and it seems like it never ends that something needs to be fixed with some game or other, so I tend to update as they're available.

I haven't had to "roll back" any drivers yet (not for ME2 anyway), but I have had to do some extensive fiddling with settings in NVidia's control panel thingy to get things looking "normal" again.  And by 'normal', I mean awesome. All kinds of lighting and particle effects and a ton of other detail had disappeared at some point, and playing around with NVidia control panel settings seemed to have fixed my problems at least.

I think, first, I restored NVidia's settings to default for ME2. Then I forced everything to max and went from there. I had to reduce a couple of things from max to get things into a nice balance of quality and performance, but it was hugely rewarding, taking the time to get things balanced out again, and getting stuff turned back on that I didn't even realize I was missing until I got it back. I still get a little odd flickering around some characters' faces' animations, but it's otherwise perfect again.

It's well known that Nvidia's recent drivers don't play nice with Mass Effect 2 (at least, well known for regulars in the tech support forum here). You could revert to driver version 258.96, that's the last driver set that had no reported problems with ME2.
