A month from being 1 year ago, the government decided to increase its efforts researching "suspicious memes" that could spread “false and misleading” political ideas on social media, by throwing a bunch of money at the problem and literally browsing shitposts with federal money.

Judging by the comments section of anything, they've failed.

Truthy makes use of complex computer models to analyze the sharing of information on social media to determine how popular sentiment ... and other factors affect the manner in which information is disseminated.

At least they got what they wanted, in a fashion. But my God, what an idiotic reference for a name

It's still throwing tons of money to essentially get a computer to point out a post, and say, "Yup. This is popular, or spam." Judging by the way a lot of the research was phrased, all it managed ot study was what got posted a lot, and didn't manage to really distinguish bot from real poster.

It'd be an interesting thing to find out if it was say just something some college kid did, or a team of scientists did on a whim of spare time. But creating an entire Analyzing Program to try and see what's a Dank Meme and whats a Shitpost seems really, really, dumb.

is bankrolling a database of “suspicious memes” and other “false and misleading” political ideas posted on social media.

known as “Truthy,” inspired by comedian Stephen Colbert’s concept of “truthiness.”

The ultimate goal of the project, as explained in the NSF grant, seems to include suppression of this content: “[Truthy] could mitigate the diffusion of false and misleading ideas, detect hate speech and subversive propaganda, and assist in the preservation of open debate.”

Truthy is scheduled to begin reporting users to the FBI this fall. Users will remain in the federal database “forever, regardless of their innocence or guilt, or their intentions.” said lead FBI agent Paul Horner. “This database will be shared with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other agencies.

Facebook has also made a secret deal to report users to the FBI for creating memes and sharing them with other users.

Do they really lack self awareness to this extent, or is it one big ruse? At this rate, the United States is going to have a Meme Gestapo.

The irony being, posting DoomPaul meme images is a surefire way to get you arrested first.

This is nothing new the Capitol is back loaded with wasted tax payer money and the jerks in power fear running out their free money so they keep invented horrible projects to justify the endless excessive taxation which in turn keeps the underclass shackled and the robber-barons doge them since they can invent a million and one tax loop holes to avoid their fair share of taxation.

Federally funded Democratic oppo research... why not. Suck that teat for all it's worth, SJWs.

I would worry about the chilling effect on free speech but then I remember that the feds can't pull their pants up on a good day.
