No, this isn't a gush thread. I just don't feel like raising the dead like those nasty blood mages.

I had a thought occur to me only recently, and it made me very disappointed in myself as a Firefly fan. There's a reason I immediately liked this dwarf.

I apologize if anyone's made this connection via the forums and I just haven't seen it posted. I look before I post, but no one's perfect.

So many things about Varric make sense after making this connection, from him being unromanceable to his line of work. Perhaps it was blindingly obvious to some of you, but I took the game series for what it was before I saw all the Whedonish easter eggs in each game.

Come to think of it, Varric does aim to misbehave.

Eh. Both are roguish and mercenary types, but theres a long list of differences too. Varric is cerebral and literary, and Mal isn't. Varric always prefers to resolve things peacefully, with one or two exceptions, and Mal would just as soon throw them out the airlock

Mal doesn't show his chest enough

Maltheir, I was displaying the similarities in character design. Obviously they are not carbon copies. Just as Dali included the Venus De Milo in his artwork, Gaider included many Whedon references, but never once made blatant copies. I saw Varric as inspired by Mal, not an exact copy. If you truly want to point out differences, Mal clearly isn't a dwarf, nor a bard. Mal was a space cowboy who only worried about keeping his ship running and crew safe.

What makes Varric different is that he's the Rogue Bard of DA2. His skills deal purely with his crossbow and his song of Bianca, and his legendary story-telling skills fit the real world historical lore of how a bard would sometimes operate, gathering information. The copius amounts of gold Varric wears, along with baring his chest, are signs of his place as a merchant prince. Going along with history, you wore your riches. To have a tunic made with such elaborate embroidery and vivid red would have to be purchased by someone who could afford it.

By the time Hawke had to choose sides, I was certain he wanted to toss both Orsino and Meredith off a cliff. I would have helped.

I wonder if the designer even made the conscious choice or was just influenced by Mal's character from his/her past?

I think I just like Varric a bit more.  I wish he was a bit more amorous with some random nonromancable toon in some unrequited love (other than Bianca...the girl not the crossbow DA:I) thing like Val.  I'd love to see Varric T. with a tad bit of angst.

I'd forgotten about Firefly.  (Don't know how) Know where I'll be spending the next 13 hours...TYVM for the reminder.

Well, if Gaider thought of Mal when creating Varric, perhaps he intended the outfit to be a distant shoutout to Mal, minus the trousers of course. I believe the duster and choice of red is what clicked for me.

I wouldn't want Varric with angst. I love his snarky wit and that everything seems to bounce off him. I've seen the whole ordeal with Varric and Bianca Devri, but I'm not sold that a guy could hold onto unrequited love for possibly 20 years. Even Mal himself began to fall for Inara. The idea people had thrown around about Hawke with Varric actually made sense to me, even though I personally wouldn't ship my Hawke with him. But as you've said, I would love him finding a new lady and partner in crime. I could see Varric subtly seeking Bianca's approval before she'd say, "Just go be happy, you deserve it."

Oh, and you're welcome. I've been thinking of the show lately... it's worth rewatching.

Ha I never noticed that before, but I know some of the devs are Whedon fans and have made Buffy references before, so I wouldn't be surprised. I never really followed Buffy myself at the time, but I have seen and do like Firefly.

I don't ship Varric and Hawke either, but I don't know...he hero worships and talks about Hawke a little too much. With male Hawke I can buy him seeing Hawke as a surrogate brother, with his own brother being estranged and all...he and Hawke can have that in common with their siblings. But with fem Hawke....yup I see why people did ship it. Hawke is just too high maintenance for him though. :P

Hmm, Varric is a class act as a bard, and after seeing how he'd spun crazy stories about Aveline with his new saucy series, it makes sense that he'd want to drum up a lot of fuss over Hawke. It's a gift that keeps on giving. :D But really, how else will Varric leave his mark on the world, but through stories? His greatest tales would be of Hawke. And hearing his own rumors circle back to him having grown 10 fold has to be pretty satisfying.

I have a feeling that high-maintenance part has nothing to do with gold, just her (or his?) place in society. You know, walk X situation where at least 8 people are ready with weapons. But then again, he does get to introduce everyone to Bianca. In my mind canon, Varric would be fem Hawke's best man. Yup, my Hawke won't have a maid of honor. She also never came with living siblings, because... eh. Better story that way. I have no clue who will be the poor victim  groom. I'm sure Varric would have a legendary toast that will make people laugh and cry, as well as some tidbit embarrassing enough to make her blush.
