The problem with Wynne being court mage is that there aren't any epilogues with children. Wynne would be great as court mage/nanny. For all her flaws, I would trust her completely with my children. And if she ever really started being grating, I'd just encourage the little ones to ask her about griffons.

Do you realise what you're saying? No way I'd give her the oppurtunity to brainwash the kids. Image IPB

Ugh, Maker, no!  And have the heir grow up as a sanctimonious Chantry mouthpiece?

My HNF did not elbow out Arl Eamon only to have The Mouth piping up at council meetings telling them that what they are doing does not befit a Grey Warden etc. ad nauseum.  Alistair can have her mothering for one year max and then measures will be taken.  Image IPB

If my elf becomes chancellor and Wynne stays in court, he will strongly encourage Alistair to reassign her to a post in Outer Mongolia.

Besides, does Wynne even have that much pride? I never got the impression that she thought of herself as "special."

Wynne is the most sanctimonious, judgemental companion you can have.  There are times that I wish was an option.  Wynne is of the opinion that her point of view is the only one that is right and believes herself to be unquestionable.

Heh, I'm still mad at her over what she said at the gauntlet to my city elf.  Her standard comments are SO bad normally, but in that circumstance, just terrible.  *grin* She doesn't like my PC much this game, but at least she's not going to try to kill my warden, though go against her in a couple of circumstances, she'll gladly try to kill Ferelden's only hope.

Nope, nope, I don't like Wynne!  Abomination that she is!

If you had met my grandmother you could do what I do and say it's cause she's an old lady who is very smart. Cause my Grandmother is the same way. Her opinion is right and can never be wrong.

Hmmm, would your grandmother tell a young woman who had just seen a close friend as well as her fiance murderred, and her best friend raped, who did everything in her power to save them all, and who was willing to take the full burden of the consequences that she was somehow to blame? Wynne I doubt is as smart as your grandmother!

Actually I meant she was like my grandmother in that she is always right. And BTW I never took wynne with me to the Gauntlet the ONE time I played as a City Elf. Only on my 2 playthroughs as a Human Noble, 1 playthrough as a Dwarf Noble, and 1 playthrough as an Elven Mage so I didn't know that she said that. Don't know if I like Wynne too much anymore after hearing abouth that.

Heh, I missed the irony in your comment! Sorry! Wynne is very flawed. But there are people who, if you say something against her, do feel that you're dissing their grandmother. *grin*

Especially if you take her with you when you rescue the girl in the chantry's little brother during the preparation for the seige of redcliffe. "Get out here right now young man."

Wynne is just one of those characters you start out liking but like less and less with each playthrough.

+1

Sten, Morrigan and Zevran have steadily grown on me, Leliana and Wynne are now parked in camp on a semi-permanent basis.  Too annoying by far.

Too true. I still may end up taking Leliana with me (only because she's a rogue), but talking to her is starting to get boring. I don't *hate* her, but when her conversations at high approval are still just "shoes! and sparkles! and oh yeah I killed a lot of people but kisses and giggles!" I'm starting to get annoyed. Wynne I don't even bother recruiting anymore. Morrigan is such a better mage.

Zevran can easily be re-spec'ed into a cunning rogue within a couple levels, less if you use some tomes.  He comes ready-made as a more effective fighter than Leliana, so this is a good trade-off and always my solution to that dilemma.  Most chests aren't worth the added annoyance.

My elven blood mage recruited Wynne very reluctantly (who wants a Circle spy hovering over one's shoulder?).  She can guard the camp and provide a few testy conversations about the Circle now and again.  If I get her approval high enough to meet Aneirin, that will be a bonus.

*grin* I was really hoping that Alistair at very low hostile would reject my Cousland, and he did.  So apparently you have to be neutral for that wedding to take place!  He did insist that she be his chancellor, gave a fantastic dialog post landsmeet that I have never heard (my last Alistair-hate game, he broke up with my warden at -34 hostile), basically not understanding why the Warden hated him so much.  He liked my answers so much that I got down to 100 hostile and got his hate speech.  This has been a FABULOUS game!

Of course, this was the wrong thread to post this in.  I'm sure Wynne approves of Alistair rejecting her!  Too bad she was hanging out at Arl Eamon's estate.

Oh, it is so good to have found my people! I can not *stand* Wynne. She's the only character in the game that I really hate, including the drunk and the mass-murderers. It didn't start as hate, mind you. My first PC was a young, naive mage who didn't have a mother and looked to Wynne for advice. It made perfect sense to me that she'd listen to the old bat, even if I found her annoying as hell.

My second character was a human noble who had, until very recently, had parents that she loved dearly. And a Nan. And even a religious instructor... so really, she had no use for Wynne's lectures and preaching. She certainly didn't need reminders of her duty to the people -- she'd been raised as a nobel, for Maker's sake, and certainly understood about noblesse oblige. I found myself getting more and more irritated that even when I picked the conversation options saying yes, I get it, I know that... it still triggered the same demeaning, listen-up-child lectures. Even so, my PC was raised correctly and was polite to the old ***** regardless... until I mis-clicked a responce and the old bat blew her top! Over nothing, really, and my PC had an approval in the 90s with her, and suddenly she was being insulted and berated like a naughty five-year-old. I was still reeling from that when I got her incredibly nasty lecture about Zevran, and that did it. HATE!

I completely agree with the posters who point out that the more you play with her, the more you dislike her. She's exactly the opposite of the other characters, most of whom grow on you as the game progresses and you do more playthroughs. Wynne, on the other hand -- at this point I just kill her immediately or permanently park her in camp and save myself the aggravation.

And don't even get me started on the RtO content. It was so offensive and gross -- even more so as the old hag had *just* told my PC that she had to break up with Alistair because of blah-blah-blah-darkspawn-whatever. She was actually trying to push my mage out of the way so she could move in herself! Gross, and so typical of the self-serving hypocrite.

I'm not sure if the writers intended for her to be this despicable and toxic. It's something I've pondered with each playthrough -- sometimes I'm sure that it was all intentional, other time I think they intended her to be the PC's wise, sage adviser and just missed the mark completely. I've seen some excellent posts about other characters, such as the one by David G. about Zevran, but nothing about Wynne. Has anyone else?

Can you give us a recap?  I love Ali way too much to ever get him to 100 hostile so I'm never going to see this part of the game, but I'm very curious.

Here's a youtube video of it.  The only real difference is since he hit -100 hostile AFTER my warden made him king, I had this additional dialog choice.

www.youtube.com/watch

Alistair: I guess I'll have to be satisfied with you actually helping to stop the Blight, won't I? If that's still your intention.  I can't do it on my own.
Warden: So says the king of Ferelden.  Sad, really.
Alistair: Let's just go. I don't want to talk to you any more.

What's really awful about this choice is Alistair, by virtue of being hostile, is unhardened.  He knows he'll be a crappy king (****** poor is the term he uses) and is really upset about the whole situation.

Edit: Ninjaed!
