I have mentioned it in passing elsewhere but for anyone who is not aware the ccc for August will be the 5th anniversary of the very first month's challenge (i.e. the very first NwN ccc occurred in August 2010). To mark this occasion I am going to see if I can get a previous submission I did with someone else (I'll reveal all when I send it in as an upgrade addendum to that submission) working even better than before. I have been working on it in the background but haven't touched it for 6 months. Hopefully with a (albeit self-imposed) deadline I'll now get it finished.

So I was wondering if anyone else has any plans for marking this anniversary. If So what? If not, is there any particular reason (moving house only just qualifies :D )?

I think a really good theme for the anniversary would be for everyone to work on old CCC projects. I know a lot of people didn't finish one thing or another, or wanted a chance to expand on this or that. Let's give them an extra month to do just that.

I was vaguely wondering, almost subconsciously in the fashion of a heavily preoccupied dugong, whether there'd be any actual, specific activity for August's CCC (for the reasons mentioned...)

Of course, there's precisely no reason we can't improve/finish things we started/planned for a CCC anytime we please anyway, but, maybe being poked with a stick might help.

I know I've got a half-done, vastly improved version of the Dark Sun Tembo (one that actually looks like a horrifying Athas beast, not just a Dire Tiger with bits on). It needs finishing. Got a few other Dark Sun bits and pieces too since I ran out of time that month having nailed together half an entire ecosystem... so a retro Tembo-grappling session sounds good to me.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, this thread is not (currently anyway) about an official response to the upcoming anniversary. I started it to let people know that I am working on something myself and to ask if anyone else was doing the same. My thoughts are that it should run in parallel to the normal monthly challenge and that to restrict either one of the monthly challenges or anyone's response to this thread, to just upgrading previous challenges is a bad idea for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that my understanding about the challenges are that they are for promoting new content which you don't get with upgrades. The second reason is that you would expect these upgrades to come (mostly at least) from the original creator, thus discouraging new contributors.

Thus for this thread I am not imposing any restrictions on anyone who wants to create other than whatever is being created is being done with the anniversary in mind and it preferably works in game. Mind you a model of a birthday cake with five large candles would be nice. And a loadscreen with the words happy birthday or happy 5th or whatever. In other words they don't necessarily have to be practical gamewise but working would be nice.

@PHoD I like it and BTW have you got a spare poking stick (see Diary)

Six months is a long time. I know that I had about 2/5 of it working. The trouble is I forgot how I did it. Insane solution - "I know if I go through and comment (OK my bad, I should have done this from the start) my scripts then I should be able to figure what and how". Six hours later... Shoot me please...

I wasn't trying to butt in on anyone's creative process. I just threw out something that came to mind at that very moment. To me the word 'new' means 'anything' new. That includes 'new upgrades' to 'old content'. Heck there was a whole month of 'Remakes, Repairs and Reboots'. I don't see why this idea is all that different.

Apologies if I stuck my nose in where it didn't belong.

You didn't. Apology neither necessary or required. Just 2 people expressing their views in an amicable manner. Just a thought but why not investigate this package with a view to making a birthday prefab for the theme of this thread? No modelling skills and little scripting (and plenty of help in these threads if you get stuck) needed. That package is so easy to use that I made use of one of the included prefabs in one of my modules.

Perhaps if it is an anniversary, it might be great to create a bunch of custom content celebrating various custom content making legends, past and present, that have contributed lots of incredible stuff over the years. I was mainly thinking 'statues' and possibly paintings, but it doesn't have to be limited to that.

The traditional 5th anniversary is wood. That could cover a lot, from wood golems to talking trees, wagons, elven tree houses, &c.

In certain ancient RW cultures, such as Greece, statues were made from wood...

I didn't make anything that first month. :(

But I did turn a parrot placeable into a shoulder-mounted VFX the 2nd month. :)

My first entry wasn't until the April 2011 challenge. Mind you I did give Mistress pause for thought when I sent 72 placeables and 71 inventory items in.

Currently my inet keeps kicking me off after between 10 seconds and 10 minutes (seemingly randomly). I then have to reset my mifi to get back on. That is why I am fairly quiet on here ATM However...

Diary

I have apparently cracked the behaviour of The Borkshire (anyone who finds out what that is will also find out what I am trying to get working properly). Still loads to do though.

One new mifi later...

Dairy (well I've got to milk it  :) )

Coming across annoyances that mean that instead of being able to use built in spell routines, I'll have to write my own - Grrrr.

So it is now August. Just wondering is anyone else doing anything to mark this occasion?

As to what I am doing. My PC is showing its age and playing up which coupled with RL means I may well not be able to finish before the end of the month (which is why my recent posts have tended to terseness) .

Maybe. I'm sure I can think of a few things with a "five" theme.

Some ideas:

- a gem-studded pentagram placeable

- a gold crown VFX with five spikes

- a five-headed feline creature (as a reference to the old "like trying to herd cats" when getting everyone to get everything in)

- a shield shaped like a five-pointed star

- a set of five dragon statues made of crystal, colored to match the five classic chromatic dragons

- a new golem model made from the parts of five existing golems (1 for each limb, another for head and torso?)

I still favour a birthday cake with 5 candles - it's quick and easy if you know what you're doing. Practically all down to the texture.

Yes, maybe you just need something simple, like a big Roman 'V' placeable (such as a mysterious marble column or statue)? Builders could surreptitiously insert it into their modules as a tribute to the CCC.

The only trouble with using V is that there was a whole !970's TV series called that, in world war 2 resistance groups would daub V (for victory) on walls and during the same period the BBC World Service used the morse code for V as their call sign.

V for victory? You think this symbolism is a problem?

Well if necessary you can give the V a wider serif. Even a cap across the top.

The logo is from the US Sci Fi series though the meaning is much the same. Why would anyone find it inappropriate?

Not necessarily inappropriate. Overused or confusing maybe but not inappropriate.

How about "305".  That would be obscure.
