I want to get opinions on how specializations are handled after you finish the specializations mission to unlock the trainers.

*spoiler*
Even after competing the missions and talking to the trainer, you don't get your specialty. I did my specialty missions, talked to the Rift Mage trainer, and she sent me on a few collection quests to get crafting materials for a Rift Mage manual.

I seriously have been waiting a long time to get my specialization, Instead of unlocking the specialization tree, they send you ok fetch quests and make you wait even longer.

Grr. Really Bioware? really ?

Why should I be angry? I liked that I didn't just got handed the specialization on a silver plate and had to do something for it.

While asking Alistair in DAO if he could teach you (or others) the Templars spec was a nice way to get a spec. I'd rather go on a fetch quest, than do stuff like making a deal with a demon (for Blood Mage), or defile the ashes of Andraste (for Reaver) to get a spec.

Also you get Exp for finding/fighting for the stuff you need, so it's finally really a training.

So, to answer my question. you weren't angry? How many hours did you spend training by fighting with spells before you qualified for your specialization ? What level?

For me it was 60 hours of working my way up to get my specialization at level 13. I would not consider all my time training to as being handed the specialization on a silver platter.

Wait, do you count from the beginning with those 60 hours, or from when you reach Skyhold?

I arrived at Level 11 or 12 at Skyhold and got my spec as Rift Mage at level 13 too

I don't know how many hours I had played with Bruce when I got the spec, but he's now at Level 18 and I played for 101 hours until now (with him).

But I don't consider the hours before Skyhold as training for the spec. You can't get any spec before you reach Skyhold and the specs of your Companions won't unlock until they reach Level 12, so getting a specialization around Level 12-13 sounds normal too me.

Agreed. The time before Skyhold has nothing to do with the training and doesn't count as one. When you reach Skyhold, the specialization can be acquired really quickly after unlocking the trainers. In every playthroughs I have already had most of what I need for the Spirit blade (Lazurite) or for the Jeweled skull (Bloodstone) before arriving to Skyhold due to looting/farming, so it's a quick task to get the rest collected (Wisp essence/Nevarran skulls). Same goes for Ring velvet (Fallow Mire). And if not, all those things are quick and easy to get even after Skyhold. Actually, I've also had the Nevarran skulls and Wisp essences collected before Skyhold, so that makes it even more faster to fill the requirements. I'm fine with this system.

Yeah, the only thing that takes time, is getting the Venatori Tomes, but once you know where the spawning places for the Venatori Rift Mages are, it's easy and fast done.

I even forgot to specialize in one play through.  It's nice, but not necessary.  Wanna play a rift mage? Take over Solas.  Knight-Enchanter (OP but fun) Vivianne.  Really Necromancer is crap (I assume Dorian, but didn't check).

Did it bug me?  No, but I didn't dwell on it, but my BFF rl obsessed over it until she unlocked it.

For me it was just a background thing I was going to get around to doing.  If it was on the top of your list I can see how it would be annoying (especially if you go to the bookseller in Val to find, nope not there).

I'm just now doing rift mage as an unlock, and this is my completionist playthrough (I really wanted to do it with Sera romance, and that romance has glitched 3x...this one running smoothly and just got final lock).

We all have our weird hangups as players.  Specialization I wasn't expecting, so I thought it was a nice bonus.  Making me wait for it...well I kinda liked it.

BioWare Masochist?  Maybe...hmmmmm

For me it was definitely one of the "sorry Mario, but the Princess is in another castle" moments for me. Getting my specialization was pretty important to me as I like having a large variety of spells to choose from. The initial shock passed today when I googled the location of the Venatori tomes , and I was able to get them and the other material pretty quickly.

I am now a proud rift mage :)

*note that I originally wanted to be a Knight Enchanter, but from what I have read it makes the game too easy, and I want a challenge. Perhaps not a nightmare mode challenge, but a challenge nonetheless.
