Blood magic was always kind of weird, primarily with the fact that you have to use your own blood to do it (but blood mages usually otherwise used other people as mana batteries). I'd like to see it back - and done right - but I really think this is the type of specialization that should use your other characters as mana batteries.

Laidlaw said he doesn't want it back unless they can create a lot of reactivity to it. So we'll see I guess.

Hah, "mana battery." Haven't heard that for like four World of Warcraft expansions.

I'm hoping it doesn't get put in, despite reactivity. In fact, if we DO go to Tevinter I REALLY hope it's not in the game, otherwise it will seem rather mandatory from a story perspective in that specific case. It seems like the player that wants to get the most out of a Tevinter locale would feel compelled to choose blood magic over something else they might prefer just to see all of that reactivity. The only way to counter this problem would be to have just as much reactivity for deciding to forgo taking that spec.
"Why did you choose the blood magic spec for your mage in DA4?"
"Because Tevinter, duh."
"But what about the spec's playstyle most interested you and led you to choose it?"
"Eh, I probably won't use it very much. I prefer the elemental abilities over anything else. I just chose it for the story aspect."
I don't think that should be the primary reason that a player chooses a spec, nor do I think that the devs want players to feel compelled to pick one spec over another because of its vast superiority in whatever area. Even though the process is decried by players who shout "it's a SP game, stop killing our fun!" they do take things like that into consideration when they do balance changes.

Yep. Miss the idea of having the blood mage. I don't even know if I ever played one in DA2. It's not that I don't think we should have them, but if we do the writer's need to write compensatory dialogue for the contingency. Mages give me a harder time with RPG immersion in DA2 and DA:I...just a wee bit.
Since Leliana wants to go Steel unless I remember to make a suggestion early on, and she's going hard core...I think blood mage seems kind of tame compared to when she comes back from being "released" as the left hand.

If we're in Tevinter or Anderfal, we better get some blood magic spec. No more hiding it or using excuse to avoid it.

I'm still amazed that they went through all this trouble to claim Blood Magic would not be in DAI because they wanted more reactivity for specializations. In light of how little reactivity there actually was (waaay less than the DAO system of discovering specializations, at least until you unlock them and re-load), it mostly seems like the development choice ended up being an imposed limit on role-playing, even if a logical one. I get not letting our Inquisitors be blood mages who collect blood magic gear and cast blood magic spells.... but the choice/decision of whether your character would consider using blood magic, and if so under what situations, was an important role playing aspect of playing a mage. If we can't have blood mage be a specialization anymore, there could be plot centered moments where we can use blood magic for reasons (say unlocking a magically sealed door to take a short cut to cut off the villain before they ambush our allies, or something less lame) and we have to live with the consequences. That type of implementation could be more believable than say our characters donning the regalia of a blood mage and constantly casting blood magic, and open up an interesting avenue for role-playing decisions.

I was pretty disappointed by the reactivity. So I learn a spec and get a few lines from some followers and a war table mission (or two). That's it? Although I suppose it was better than DA2...
Again though, because of the very nature of blood magic and its importance to the lore -- far and above any other spec across all three Dragon Age games -- it seems unfair to have a great deal of reactivity surrounding a single spec. Blood magic deserves to have a great amount of response given what it is. But because of that disparity I don't really feel it should be included at all.
Blood magic aside, depending on the story, going to Tevinter is already going to be problematic if the PC is a mage because of the nature of mages and their considered superiority. Yes, I do understand that even in Tevinter that there are mages who are slaves and that not all mages are created equal, but it IS still an advantage that would have to be explained in some manner, and mage vs non-mage would also have to have a great deal of reactivity, regardless of spec.

And that is the biggest jest. It is not like any other spec or class had any profound impact on the game either so far. Mage in general being one of them.
Blood magic should return.

the biggest problem with blood magic is that it should be a major plot point whether or not your character is a blood mage. I'd love to see the option return but it should really include reactions to it. obviously not everyone is going to just 'know' about it, but if they see you using blood magic they should react. that makes for a lot of extra work though and just for one specialisitation of one class. it's hard to justify the time and resources spent on something like that which means it's unfortunately not likely to happen

Yeah but the thing is, all the other specs are learned from trainers that are invited to Skyhold by one of the advisors. Bloodmages are the only ones that people tend to dislike universally.

The blood magic specialization needs to be put back into dragon age. As much as I loved DAI it felt like a teen version of dragon age. Let's just admit necromancy sucked if the AI was in control. Rift Mage never wowed me and knight enchanter was a bit overpowered which lost a bit if the challenge in my book. We need darker story lines and the option to be evil or at the very least practice the forbidden magic in the lore. If the next game is based in tevinter the option to be a blood Mage should be obvious. I played all the games. Read all the novels. Overall my favorite parts are always the dark and uncomfortable bits. Please include a sexy guy desire demon
Depends on the setting of the game and how the reactions would work

I'm neither here nor there regarding blood magic, but if we get the Spellbinder class, I'd really prefer if they came up with another way to use the spells/grimoire without blood magic being attached to it. I'd dislike having to pick up a class I'm not fond of (if we're able to get multiple specializations again) just to use the class I do want to use.

The issue is that blood magic should get a lot of reactivity. The other specs aren't really things that elicit a reaction out of people, but blood magic does.

This. I wouldn't mind seeing blood magic back but only if there is reactivity to it. DA2 was a bit ludicrous with being able to perform blood magic in the courtyard of the Gallows in front of Templars with no reaction whatsoever. Given the general attitude towards blood magic in Thedas, being one should put any blood mage PC at a severe disadvantage. People could refuse to talk to you or help you, even try and assassinate you and so on and so forth. It'd be even better if there were two different kinds of reactivity - one level for blood mages who use their own blood exclusively but a second level for blood mages who use the blood of others. This would offer an opportunity for all of those people who demand the ability to be 'evil' to, say, capture people to use as sacrifices. Of course, that might close off certain story line possibilities but, hey, actions have consequences!
As an extension of that, if we do head north in the next game and deal with Qunari, I want to see them react appropriately to any mage PCs, blood mage or otherwise. We've seen how Qunari treat mages - masked, collared and leashed Saarebas, possibly even with lips sewn shut and tongue removed - so I'd like to see Qunari react by perhaps automatically attacking a mage PC whereas they might at least be willing to talk to a non-mage PC.

And blood magic is learned in secret. No biggie.
Truth to be told, the game holds so little reactivity to any other school of magic or player spec that claiming the reactivity to be the factor of not having BM in the game is rather lame. The game itself stomps over lore so much that BM is a small fish compared to it. Exhibit A: mages.

We may see more aspects of magic crop up beyond Blood Magic which is what I'd like to see. We got to see Necromancy which we sort of already had, but this time it was a stand-alone. I'd like to see the other sides to magic beyond Rift, Blood and Elemental. They have to have some ideas brewing because there should be people that have been working on different power sources beyond tapping into the Fade or Human Sacrifice. Maybe we'll see a slight bit of a techno-revolution in the next game and see Technomancy come up as a new toy to tool with. We do already have Isabela, who isn't a member of the Qun and many others using bombs, guns and other things that go boom. It could even be the way Dwarves learn how to use magic in the DA world (Sandal is excluded because he should be renamed Deus Ex Sandalis for what he does).
