Do you think BioWare could handle an Open-World IP?

Open world like Skyrim, you build your character from scratch and do something like Skyrim or TES games, just travel and do stuff, join guilds, etc -- with the way they handle characters and plot. If there was a spinoff made out of the Dragon Age franchise, I would like to see something like this happening. I like the main franchise, though there are times, I wish both styles were separate entities. However, I know BioWare could handle both styles and an open-world IP made by BioWare is something I would like to see someday. Just way better than what Dragon Age Inquisition did. That depends how you see the open-world type, I guess.

N.B.: Mods have permission to move this thread to the Lounge if this is off topic.

I think they could, yes. Maybe the secret IP they are working on right now is open-world like you describe.

I think they could, but i don't want Dragon Age to be that franchise. If their new IP is focused like that, i think it would be interesting.

I really don't know, DAI was a complete failure when it came to openess and exploration and trying to make the world feel alived and lived in. How big are we talking here anyway, TW3 big, Skyrim big?

Could they? Yes.

Would I buy it?  No.

I find Bethesda games to be about as fun as watching paint dry. I prefer Bioware's stronger focus on story and characters, rather than the Bethesda approach where the game world itself is the focus and the characters populating it are an afterthought. Much of what I didn't like about DA:I was also due to the influence Skyrim (and its 20 million units sold) had on the development of that game.

I think they can handle it as long as they find a balance between more story focus and exploration

I don't know if I'd agree with you. Once the paint dries, I have something tangible to show for it: a freshly painted [something]. Whereas with a Bestheda game? Eh.

Is the potential cool? Yes. But in DAI, the side content just wasn't good and wouldn't hold the game together if it wasn't for the main quest, unlike Skyrim where you can't really find much difference between the main story and the side content. Not that Skyrim has very engaging storytelling and execution, mind you.

If they were to consider the same open world areas like in DAI or even a proper open world for their next game, their content needs to be more engaging or the open world would just be a nice sandbox with not much substance.

However I'd much rather they focus on giving the best story, characters and interaction possible rather than focusing on open world elements.

Bethesda is great at making games where the lack of focus in the main narrative is actually a strength, Bioware's at their strongest when they focus on the main narrative. That said they had good ideas for DAI's side content that just weren't fleshed out and left you wanting, so they are certainly capable of making good side content in an open world setting. Would they be better off making a new IP that ditched the main narrative focus? I'm not sure, maybe if they got some completely new blood to make it? I think i'm fine with each developer doing their own thing though.

This

The market for open-world games is already saturated. If a company is going to produce a new OW game then it really needs to stand out.

Inquisition has a very boring, static, and dull open world. Its one saving grace is that it looked beautiful.

I feel like people have never played a game that was an actual complete failure when they say things like these.

I see your point, and raise you the best game of all time:

Bioware doesn't get what people like about open world games, because open world games are fundamentally inimical to the type of design Bioware pushes forward on.

Hell no DA:I showed they have no idea how to design a good open world

The "exploration" aspect of DA:I was terrible, the open world was big but lifeless and felt artificial, there were no villages or cities (pls don't mention Crestwood or Val Royeaux) and no interesting side quests to do or NPC's to meet instead we had the same old shards to collect and rifts to close (exciting I know)

It had a laughable amount of boring fetch quests and a silly power system (who thought that was a good idea? same with the war table mobile game)

The zones were also completely unconnected from the main story which in turn suffered because of it

Its a shame too because its supposed to be the final chapter set in Southern Thedas (probably the last we saw of many recurring characters like Leliana or Varric) and instead of going out with a bang they went out on a wimper (Mage Templar conflict the best example, lazily solved after all the build up)

Open world just doesn't conform with what Bioware is famous for (story and character focused RPG's) but since they think everyone wants Skyrim in their games now they will keep making cheap knock offs instead of focusing on what they do well

This, dragon age should focus on greta storytelling and characters. They can't do open world and give us that, which is why inquisition had the shortest and least personal story of any dragon age game.

I'm sure they could, but I'd very much rather they didn't. I want BioWare to focus on stories and its characters. An open world game would abandon both.

I don't why people are complaining that Bethesda games don't have a main plot.

Yes, Skyrim's main plot was downright awful, but Fallout 3 and Oblivion both had solid main storylines. Certainly better than average in video games. Better than Inquisition.

Bruh, Fallout 3 is my favorite Bethesda game, but it's main plot was pretty ****. I haven't played Oblivion, but if it's anything like Fallout 3 or Skyrim, it's main plot wouldn't be anything to brag about either.

Perhaps part of it is that I didn't play it until Broken Steel was already out and installed so I never experienced the original ending firsthand, but I finished the final mission 'Who Dares Wins' feeling very satisfied.

I enjoyed Oblivion's main plot.

Simple answer: no.

Why?: Just look at Inquisition.

My idea of an open world is not what Bioware and CD Projekt have achieved. Even the new Unreal Engine Kite demo has only shown it can do VR simulations. If Bioware can show us more of Thedas where all that lore is relevant I'd like to see it.

I thought they had abandoned their version of Funcoms secret world.
