So, it's been 19 and a half hours since release and I'm still not playing Mass Effect 2. Really a shame, as I've been anticipating this game since the first one was released and I've spent the last month checking every single day to see if new videos/content were revealed.

Oh yeah, also my girlfriend pre-ordered it months in advance for my birthday. So after all of that and having to wait 6-7 hours for Trymedia to send out a round of "OMFG LOL WE FORGOT TO SEND YOU THESE!" key-codes to everyone who ordered a digital-only preorder from Gamestop, I cannot help but feel that EA's whole laissez-faire approach to PC releases and the horrifying web of problems it seems to be causing (by the explosion in volume of this forum since 1 PM yesterday) is an enormous middle finger to me - someone who actually paid for the product. I have heard numerous reports that pirates successfully stole the game prior to release and they are all having a blast.

Why can't that be me right now?

On the plus side, it does provide me with an enormous blanket listing of companies NEVER to apply to work for once I get my degree; at this rate, Gameloft deserves to hire me more than EA. Hell, Vogster didn't even screw up this bad with Crimecraft as far as I'm concerned...

Anyhow, I am presently still receiving the 'Misconfiguration Error' no-launch when I attempt to start Mass Effect 2.

Some basic information...

XP 32-Bit System [sorry, forgot to mention that before!]

Game install directory: F:/Games/Bioware/Mass Effect 2/
EADM install directory: F:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/EADownloadManager/

Pre-ordered from Gamestop, downloader and key-code provided by Trymedia.

I have not yet determined if I HAVE to install on C:/ (an auxiliary drive in my system) or not.

The following is a list of attempted fixes:

1. Ran 'masseffect2_misconfig.exe' as provided by Stardock several dozen times. Application launches to the 'Initializing Wise Installation Wizard' splash, and then terminates.
2. Uninstalled and reinstalled ME2. No effect.
3. Updated EADM, tried activation via EADM. No effect.
4. Uninstalled and reinstalled ME2. No effect.
5. Attempted manual repair of EACore_App.ini. All paths were correct; no modifications were made; no effect.
6. Uninstalled ME2, ensured that Air was updated, reinstalled ME2. No effect.
7. Uninstalled EADM, uninstalled Air, uninstalled ME2. Reinstalled Air, reinstalled ME2. No effect.
8. Uninstalled ME2. Reinstalled EADM, downloaded ME2 via EADM. Installed and attempted activation of ME2; successful, but still recieved misconfig error on launch.
9. Uninstalled EADM, replaced with user-provided .rar for a 'clean and working' install. Attempted to launch ME2 from here. No effect.

So, what am I still missing? I have heard a lot flying around about EAAccessInstaller.exe or something like that, but I have no /Software/ folder either in the download destination of the original ME2 downloader nor in the game folder nor in F:/Program Files/Electronic Arts.

I'm just about ready to give up on this game completely.

I've been having pretty much the same problem, the only difference being that I got the game from Direct2Drive. Besides everything you've done I've tried both re-downloading the game and installing it in C: instead of F: like I normally put my game installs. Still nothing.

I've got CS tickets going on EA and Direct2Drive at the moment but neither has provided much of anything.
Btw incase you missed the older thread, it's located here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/774172/3

Bah! Yeah, had a look through that thread, which is where I sourced up the majority of my fix attempts. Thanks for letting me know that installing to the native drive C:/ doesn't have any appreciable effect; that was my next idea. For the time being, well. I'm stumped.

I'd debated also putting in a ticket with EA but given their impressively horrifying track record with customer care I really don't know if that's going to do anything but frustrate me even further.

It seems to me that your firewall or something blocking access to EA servers for date check process...

I've got a same problem here with first installation. Problem gone after reinstalling game and marking of all of .exe in binaries folder as "Run As Administrator"

Just had a look at my firewall and so far as I can tell there are exceptions for everything. I'm gonna try what you did, though, and see if it works.

I ran installation and tried starting game with firewall and antivirus disabled and downloaded straight from EA. Still have the same problem. Waited half hour for EA chat support got to 0 in line in front of me and then disconnected me. Sent an email to support and said page had timed out. ARRRGGGH. Have bought every Bioware RPG since Baldurs Gate 2 and never had any problems until some instability with Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Now Mass effect 2 won't start for me. I blame EA sell out. I have avoided EA games for a while but have liked Bioware so much gave in. Big Mistake EA junk trumps Bioware goodness.

Yep, no dice with running as Admin. :(

I've also been avoiding EA titles like the plague, and thought 'Hey, dude, it's Mass Effect 2. Come on, you've GOT to play it.'

If I'd known this would have happened...

Check C:\\Users\\Username\\AppData\\Local\\VirtualStore\\ folder and clear anything EA related.

If you are reinstalling with the EADM version, make sure you uninstall and wipe out everything ME2 related that may have been left from a previous bad install.

Like I posted above, I got it from Direct2Drive originally. I've also tried getting it directly from the EA Download Manager, with the same result.

Based on what I’ve been reading, the vast majority of the problems can be distilled down into two main categories:

• The user didn’t install Adobe AIR.

Solution: Install Adobe AIR, then follow the next step.

• The Access installer was not called properly.

Solution:

1) Open a command prompt

2) Go to ME 2 directory

3) Go to software subdirectory

4) Type the following command:

EAAccessInstaller.exe /s/dir "C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Mass Effect 2\\binaries"

(With the appropriate path to the ME2 binary directory).

I had Adobe AIR installed since the very first time I installed the game and it prompted me to. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it.

I've also  tried that command prompt line several times, over the course of several different installs of the game. It does nothing to help the problem for me.

Hiya Michael!

First of all, I'd like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to reply to this thread. I'd like to thank Bioware for making what looks like such a promising game, and yadda yadda yadda. I know what a crazy time release day can be, so it's super nice to have someone replying directly.

As stated in my original post, I do not have a /software/ subdirectory in my Mass Effect 2 folder, and ME2 did not install to Program Files.

Instead, I have a folder in F:/Games/Mass Effect 2 containing /Binaries/, /BioGame/, /data/, /docs/, and /engine/. A thorough search of these folders and subfolders has yielded no /Software/ directory.
