I am playing the Witcher and there are lots of children around. They play, talk, sing, and even have significant ncp roles.

It just underscores for me that aside from Morrigan's child - there are no children in Thedas to be found. Have I missed something?

It's true they are nowhere to be seen... Some people talk about them or refer to them like Blackwall who makes a toy for them but that's it. Thedas feels kind of sad and empty without children around IMO...

There is none in Inquisition, but there are definitely some in the first 2 games (Not including awakening, I don't believe there is any children in awakening).

There were far less children in DA2 than in DAO.    In Origins my Dalish clan had a whole group of them and I helped recount our history to them.   By DA2 they were all gone.    In Origins there were children that Wynne was looking after in the Circle but none to be seen in the courtyard in Kirkwall, although Bethany does mention teaching the children and even suggests that Ella is considered one (a very big child in that case).     There are children playing in the Denerim alienage and dog brings back a child on one occasion in the market.      On the whole there are far less children in DA2 that are not plot related but simply there for appearances.

It would seem that in DAI it was decided just not to waste resources on them.   So children are mentioned and we find signs of them in burnt out houses, in other places and in the Fade but we never actually see them.     They are there but you just have to use your imagination.

There aren't any in DA:I.

Part of the reason the world feels so artificial compared to Witcher 3's (or even Skyrim's).

Skyrim is an example of how not to portray children.

The Dalish kidnapped the children, and sacrificed them for more time on the clock.

Welcome to the wonder of Thedas where people outside of your Inq&company are not allowed to exist.

The people of Thedas are too busy enjoying their disposable income I guess. Dragon Age never seems to have a whole lot of children. While DA:O certainly had the most, it only has 4 total, and only two of them are named NPC's you can interact with.

Edit: correction, 5 children with the little girl in the Stone Prisoner DLC.

Nonsense, there are way more kids in DAO.

Origin stories:

You've got three kids in the City Elf Origin, who can all be talked to and all will reply.

Couslands origin has three kids that can be spoken to and one wall climber. (During the army of cloned soldiers and servant scene).

Mage origin has 3 children who all have lines, although they can not be talked to.

Dwarves don't have children. They spawn from rocks carried by Deepstalkers through the Ortan Thaig.

Dalish elf has four children loafing about (wanting to be you and missing Tamlen).

Total: 14 little demon spawn.

Main story:

Lothering has 8 in camp, 4 before bridge  2 after , 2 in the tavern and 3 in the chantry. (total: 19 (maybe +1 because the little ships kept wandering around.))

Haven has 1 little brat.

Denerim has six kids running in the market (all birthed by Goldanna), then there is the puppy child  and the sitting child. The Alienage has Amethyne, two caged kids, one dead child.  (12)

Redcliffe has four in the chantry and one in a closet. (Don't remember if more spawn after the siege.) (5)

Dalish camp has seven kiddies. (7)

Then there is Amalia in Honneleath.

The circle has three living ones. (And probably a festering pile of dead ones as well. Those pink throbbing piles of flesh on the wall? Children.). (3)

There might be more but the guards are starting to look at me funny.

So about 46 kids in the main game, around 60 in total in the game. (Only counting one cut scene kid, because he's too creepy to be forgotten. )

About 7 of the main game children have dialog related to quests. 3 of the Origin quests have actual dialog and almost all of them have general dialog lines.

Dragon age 2

There are two children in dark town in every act. And of course the Urchin.

Act 1 has Sabina's brat, the boy Anders revives and Pryce if you sided with Athenril.

Act 2 has Ella, but I'm guessing she's in her late teens.

Act 3 has Cricket and Walter.

So there are about 6 or 7 kids in DA2.

As for why are there no children in DAI? (Besides Morrigans kid) They probably didn't bother to make the models or figured that DAI was too much of a danger zone for them.

But to be honest I'm not really sad that the children are missing in DAI. There are plenty of those noise makers living near my house don't need them in the games as well.

Not just children, but cats and good mabari too. Cole mentions cats, but we never see them, and all I end up finding are wild mabari trying to eat my face off, minus the merchant one who is pretty cute!

IN DA2 there's also Lia, the elf girl in Magistrate's Orders.

In DAO, there's the Denerim messenger boy (who delivers the note beginning the Crows quests). And don't forget Connor Guerrin.

Dwarven Noble Males can get a Woman pregnant in their Origin, but I'm not sure if the child physically appears once you return to Orzammar (I do know the child is born by then, though).

Whether you like children or not, Origins did feel more inhabited as a game world, rather than just actors on a stage.     It was odd that we see all those refugees in the Hinterlands and not one child.

The Dalish camp felt more like a party of campers on a holiday trip than an actual clan.    Mind you that was true of Marethari's clan in DA2   Apparently Imshael didn't kill the children of the clan in Masked Empire but dumped them on another clan somewhere in the Dales, which might have made for a different sort of quest; please help we've got all these children including mages and we don't know what to do with them or, alternatively, where did all these elf children come from wandering around in the Emerald Graves?

Blackwall mentions the children in the camps, for whom he is making the toy.    So apparently we let the families of our soldiers and workers live outside the safety of Skyhold when we actually acknowledge we have enough room inside for an army.   Apparently catering to the whims of a bunch of visiting Orlesian nobles, including allowing them to continue to wear their ridiculous masks (my home my rules if you please) is far more important than the welfare and peace of mind of our loyal followers.    If you save the mages, Fiona said back at  Redcliffe that there were children among them.     The garden at Skyhold would make a good place for all the children to play but as I say above, clearly lack of resources meant that making the world feel lived in, like Origins did, was not a priority.

The children vanished alongside with the real mages from Origins and DA2. Lost in oblivion.

I always got a feeling of emptiness in the big open world of Thedas in DAI. You would see people walking around after you removed the bad guys, or people camping, but it still felt like you and your group were the only people in the world. Skyhold even felt less than homey despite the population increasing with each mission you completed. By the end of the game, even the party and people cheering didn't change the void-like feeling. Everything just felt... empty. Yet when you save the world in DAO, at the ceremony, everything feels lively. Or when you defeat the Arishok and everyone's cheering as you become the Champion in DA2. Even that felt more alive.

Kids in these games are frequently annoying.

I'm pretty sure whoever is responsible for them in Bethesda game has only ever suffered trauma at the hands of young people.

In TW2 I got annoyed with them following me around asking dumb questions.

And DA? That voice acting man... That. Voice. Acting.

From the kid on the bridge in Lothering with his terrible.. I'm not sure what accent that was meant to be. A Mary Poppins cockney?

To that kid in DA2 with the voice of a grown man.

It kills me every time.

I get that it feels like a more realistic world when he have all ages running around. But I can happily go without the kids. Unless they are all mute. I can deal with that.

Lol I think Conner was pretty decent. The actor did a good job when he was possessed by the Desire Demon. The one voice I could have gone without was Isolde though. Never wanted to punch a character in DA so badly.

I so wanted to call them out those fricking masks!

Not sure we need or want quests regarding children - but I still find it weird that children are neither seen nor heard.

Such attention paid to details in this game -  patterns on armor, incredible statues carved out of rock, caterpillar eaten leaves, pebble paved paths, pounding surf with spray you can almost feel - chirping birds ....but no kids - just an interesting design choice IMO.
