I've taken a good, long look at why I tend to die so very much, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not good at noticing what's happening. I can't count the amount of times I've wondered what was shooting me as my shields dropped, or failed to notice the enemies rushing in from my flank.

Does anyone have any tips on how to improve this skill? And no, the Geth Scanner is not an answer.

I don't have good advice on how to improve that, but I can say that flanks are often the result of trollspawns, so there's not much you can do about it.

In my experience solos and duos can improve your awareness by alot. Having good earphones helps hear the slightest enemy sounds too...

Edit* The more teammates you have watching your back the more Dependant you become on the eyes of others. The less teammates around the less Dependant you become of them which puts you in more of a position to improve your self sufficiency and survival

Train yourself to react whenever that little red arc showing you are being hit appears on your screen. This is the only way I learned to get downed less.

As it is with alot of shoter games. Sprint less, and never run around a corner, ever, unless you for some reason are 100% sure what is there.

moving a bit slower around the map, gives you better awareness, just cos you don`t rush into the **** at full speed.

pretty much this... and Geth scanner can help with this at least a little, just keep looking around to check your flanks. soloing helps, even from the aspect you have less surprises resulting from the actions of your squadmates. i also tend to record matches, for a bit of post-flight debrief just to see what went wrong and what to avoid in the future

EDIT: words...

I play on 120. 170 seems too much for me.

Turn on your monitor/tv.  It's a necessary crutch for some people.

I don't need a tv.  I was born awesome...

^^ Lol, that just made my day!

A good headset helps a lot, and what Marksmad said, reacting quickly to the direction of the red arc thing.

You also get to learn where the single enemy loners tend to hid. There are certain points on maps where im 99% sure there will be some unsociable geth trooper lurking.

If you think that something is going to bum rush you, you are probably right. Turn around and relocate :D

Yes it is.

That and a sufficient level of paranoia to back up it's power.

This. So, so many times I see people go down because they're facing the same direction as two others players in order to shoot at a group of enemies.

If one other player is facing a given direction, it might be worthwhile to face the same way. If two or more other players are facing the same direction, you need to be looking elsewhere, because even three bad randos are going to kill stuff quickly enough that it's going to respawn somewhere else and flank the group.

Oh. We have to talk on topic... ok.     ^ This, yes. But I think it's the epeen that get's pugs into this tunnel mode more. If everyone just took it more slow and carefully, it should always be a super smooth game.

Even before we had Geth Scanner.. I think my awareness was above average. After you have played for so long..you should know what to expect coming each wave and where the enemies will be at the start of each wave..After the 1st spawn of the wave is wasted I start turning around alot more picking up where teammates are and i can usually tell what enemies there are engaging.

Awareness comes with experience. You get some sort of internal clock and just know when to GTFO, because you feel you're getting flanked.

Yep. I've ended up joined by all three other players shooting at a Prime, found myself wondering if anyone's watching our rear so I look and... surprise! 3 Pyros strolling up behind us!
