NPCs to take for banter?

I'm starting a new game where I'll have a full party of four, but will really be playing a solo mage Normal permadeath game.  It's solo in the sense that the other three guys will never fight or do anything, I'm only bringing them along for banter, cutscenes, and similar interjections on their part, so the game isn't so "lonely".

I'm not a huge fan of the game and haven't played it a zillion times as others have.  What I'm wondering (if anyone would be so kind) is NPC combos or areas where it would be good to have this person, or those people, for things they'll say.  For example, it was sheer chance that I happened to have Zevran when I went to the Pearl in Denerim, and he added a few lines to my interaction with the duelist.  That's something you'd have no way of knowing about unless you had that certain NPC with you at the right time.

Since this seems to be the "role-play" section of the forum, I'm hoping people might be willing to list a few connections.   Things like, "be sure to have A with you when you go here", or "take B and C with you when you meet D, as they will argue over something".  I'm not looking for details on what people will say, just knowing where the others may add something extra to the game, since that's the only reason I'm taking them with me.

In KOTOR you could mix and match people and eventually hear all the banters there were, but I get the sense that many banters in DAO are tied to locations or events, so you need to have the right people at the right time, or you miss them.  It's not a big deal, just looking to add a little spice to my overcooked meal.  Anything people care to share is appreciated.

TIA

It's a similar case for DA:O in terms of banter, OP.  Though, I suggest taking Alistair with you to Redcliffe.  Different companions approve and disapprove of different choices you make, so it'll take multiple playthroughs to get all the banter and dialogue available to appear.

You could look on the DA wiki for all the stuff regarding banter and dialogue, if you want.

Overall, I'd go with Zevran, Shale and Wynne. Zevran's dialogue with everyone is usually comedy gold. Shale has unique perspectives and while Wynne is not funny per se, her banters with Zevran are the best in the game.

Specifically, take Shale and Sten to the Circle. They both have something to say. Alistair elicits a few comments in Redcliffe. Oghren gets some reactions in Orzammar, as does Shale. You need to do the Deep Roads with Oghren at least once. He has a lot to say.

If you are playing a dwarf commoner, always bring Morrigan with you to the Orzammar palace. If you are a city elf and in a romance, bring your partner with you to the Alienage. Sten gets quite dramatic when you first enter Haven.

There's more, but that's all that comes to mind on one cup of coffee.

Best of luck!

Shale's really funny at the elven village, especially if you have a elven character PC.

Also, if you want to hear the inter-party banters there is a way to do that in game. Certain spots on the maps are trigger points. One such is the bridge in Orzammar. My favourite is to circle the pillar in Wade and Herren's shop in Denerim. It's a lot easier to zone out to reset the trigger than the bridge. To use them, simply switch out party members and try different combinations. Switching party members is easier in Orzammar than Denerim, but I tend to use the same grouping repeatedly until they run out of things to say.

Zevran has good lines when you meet with Ignacio in Denerim.  I enjoy most of his banters with the other companions overall.  If Alistair is romanced, a lot of funny banters come up with all the companions as they tease him for his naivete.  Leliana will have a special dialogue for a PC who romances Alistair as well, just talk to her in a group that contains him as well for the best response.  Oghren should be taken to Deep Roads as he really shines there, though it's more a case of what he has to say to the PC vs anything he says to the others in banters.  Shale also has some good dialogue there, particularly when speaking with Caridin.  If both Morrigan and Leliana are at 'interested' they have 'catfight' banters with each other.  Just keep the relationships pretty low, or either of them will force your PC to decide between them once and for all.  Alistair is best to bring to Redcliffe.  Bring Dog to Denerim at least once.  In the Circle, Wynne can provide some background to what happened in the interim of Ostagar and the Broken Circle if you click on her.

Mousetalker's suggestion is right.  There is a bridge in Orzammar leading to the Provings area that has a banter trigger.  If it's just as much banter as you can that you want to hear, cross that, listen, head out the main doors to the entry hall, turn around and head back in and cross the bridge again till you hear everything that particular group has to say.  Once done with them, swap out, wash, rinse, repeat.  It's how I got to hear everything relatively quickly.  Both Shale and Zevran have really good banters with others, and make sure you take those two and Alistair to a banter trigger for their three way conversation about 'crossing borders'.

I believe some dialogues/banters are tied to events in game or where in the story you are as well, so some may not be available till later on.

There's also a banter trigger if you go past the doorway that leads to the room where Ignacio is located in the Gnawed Noble Tavern.  That's what I used to get all the banters, though you do have to head back to camp every time you want to switch out party members.

Call me boring but I always liked Morrigan and Alistair's banter the best. Zev is always funny. And I remember Wynne and Alistair had some great lines together.

Mostly my banter comps were : Morrigan, Sten, Alistair.  Morrgian, Oghren, Leliana. Or the one which is pretty much my default Morrigan, Alistair, Leliana.

I don't know why I never really bring anyone else. But I always liked these mixes banter the most. :/

My core party's Alistair, Wynne, and Leliana from the Circle onwards.  Before I get Wynne, I have Morrigan as my mage capacity.  This is mostly because Wynne's almost always my healer, Alistair's almost always my tank (have switched him up for Shale and Sten at points, but not often), and Leliana's my main rogue capacity, though I did do a playthrough with Zevran as my main rogue and that was fun.

Though, now that you mention it, I might try switching up my party make-up so that I can get more banter and have more interesting interactions.  Don't know why I always default to Alistair and Leliana, though.....

Yeah I guess you just get used to the characters you like the most. And I always liked Morrigan's snide comments to Alistair.

Well, tbh, if my party make-up was based on who I liked the most, it'd be Alistair, Shale, and Zevran.  My party make-up is almost always based on what I need (tank, DPS rogue, and healer mage), so Alistair, Leliana, and Wynne it is.  At least DA:I has more variety with the companions.  You have multiple choices for a tank, DPS rogue, and support mage, so you shouldn't really get stuck having to use the same companions each playthrough.  Or, at least, I shouldn't.

I never take companions based on need. Always who I wanted to be around. Even on nightmare runs. But that's mainly because if I need a good Rogue or Tank then I'll just roll it myself and let the rest of the party fill in the gaps.

Thanks for the input so far guys.  Can you recall any specific interactions?  For example, I know:

Zev and the duelist

Shale and Carridin

Morrigan meeting Wynne

Bring Dog to Denerim at least once.

Dog?  Really?  I've never taken him anywhere.

As for romance I'm going to use Equal Love, so no idea how romantic squabbles will turn out, even though it seems to conflict with some interesting mods (like ZDF).

Yep, Dog gets his own special scene the first time he's taken to Denerim.  It triggers around the front entrance of the chantry, near to the two priests mangling the Chant of Light.  Bring Alistair for additional commentary from him when speaking to the two chantry sisters.

I don't use Equal Love, it tends to play badly with ZDF and IRS, and I use the latter two to fix broken plot flags/broken dialogues, so I am unsure how that will effect banters/conversations in the game.

Yeah, I've had to skip over quite a few mods because they seem to conflict with it; no ZDF or IRS.  I also don't have combat tweaks, and that looks really good.  *sigh*

Oh and if you do the 'notify the widows' quest for the Blackstone Irregulars, each of your different companions has different lines they use if you select "Can someone else take this?" instead of talking to the widow yourself.  They won't ALL comment, just one, depending on their 'placement' in priority in your group. (I think it's similar to how the game determines 'who betrays Hawke in the Fade' in DA2 in that, if you take this or that NPC, he has priority speaking over the others).  To hear all the lines would require taking only 1 with you per scene, reloading the scene, swapping out to a different companion, and re-conversing with the widow.  This is probably easiest done with the one in the Redcliffe chantry since you can swap companions just outside the chantry door without traveling all the way back to camp.

Fortunately, even though they all have different lines depending on the personality of the companion, their line is the same for each widow, so once you do it on one widow, there is no need to repeat it on subsequent ones.

The Becilian outskirts is another trigger point.

For banter, a really interesting set occurs between Morrigan and Leliana if you have potential romances with both:  the banter is really enhanced by the MRP mod.

As a general comment, the Dialogue Tweeks mod generally enhances many of the convos and banters throughout the game.

90% of the reason I switch up parties is for banter.

In terms of combos:

Zev is hilarious across the board.

Oghren is too, but in a 'dirty old man/crazy relative' kind of way.

I mostly only take Morrigan if Wynne, Sten, Alistair or Zevran are also in the party, because I like to troll her that way.  (I know, I'm awful.)

I recommend taking Sten with Zev or Oghren at LEAST once between his telling you his sword is lost and you retrieving it for him.  Because reasons.

Sten and Dog also have some great interactions.

It's hard to go wrong with party combos for banter in Origins, really.  So many possibilities.

[Belated edit] I use ZDF, IRS-Alistair, MRP and DT for dialogue fixes.  (I avoid lore-altering mods like Equal Love, Poligamey, and anything that allows extra companions, so I have no idea how those would affect banter.)

The only companion adding mod I've used that was actually pretty good was Ser Gilmore, which plays nicely with IRS, ZDF and MRP.  Gilmore is fully voiced, and while a little on the 'fan-ficish' side of dialogue, was very enjoyable.  I put a two hander in his hands and assigned him some basic combat tactics and turned him loose.  He's a beast in combat, and looks so nice too.  The only place I didn't enjoy bringing him was in Howe's estate where he overruns the warden's dialogue there.  I felt that was a bit much for a Cousland.  Yea, he had a lot of grief with Howe too, but I felt my Cousland's grudge was more personal and the whole bit about looking like Bryce etc. was a favorite dialogue of mine.  Otherwise, he has a lot of good conversations once he opens up about what happened at the estate after Duncan and the Cousland split (or what happened after everyone was killed if the warden is another origin).

He was romanceable but I have no idea how a mod like Equal Love would monkey with it.  If he finds out you're playing him and seeing someone else, he freaks out and you go from like +100 love to -60 loathing in one conversation.  Frankly, it was kind of creepy.  Like a 'This guy will stab me in my sleep' kind of creepy.

Still, if friended, he made a good companion, and had a lot to say even after the other companions have fallen silent.  Immortal even included a dialogue if the warden allows Anora to execute Alistair. Hint: He isn't happy about it.
