From the BioWare blog
Today we debuted the first cinematic trailer for our next game, Mass Effect™: Andromeda. While we are still many months away from the game’s release date in holiday 2016, we’re excited to show you a bit of where we’re at. First, though, some background on the game itself.

When we wrapped up the original Mass Effect trilogy with Mass Effect 3: Citadel in early 2013, planning and design on Mass Effect: Andromeda was already well underway. We knew we wanted to start with a foundation composed of the best parts of any Mass Effect game: exciting new worlds to discover, great characters, and intense action. At the same time, we clearly wanted to expand the definition of what you should expect from a Mass Effect game.

While we aren’t ready to go into too many details just yet, as you saw in the trailer and can tell by the name, this game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy. You will play a human, male or female, though that’s actually not the character you saw in the trailer (more on that later). You’ll be exploring an all-new galaxy, Andromeda, and piloting the new and improved Mako you saw. And through it all, you will have a new team of adventurers to work with, learn from, fight alongside of, and fall in love with.

We built this trailer in Frostbite™, our game engine, and it represents our visual target for the final game. We are thrilled by what we’ve already been able to achieve in bringing Mass Effect to Frostbite and by putting our entire focus on PC and current gen consoles. With the time remaining in development, we’re excited about the possibility to push things even more.

Thank you again for all of the support you keep showing us, and we’re looking forward to sharing more details with you near the end of the year. Until then, the teams in our Montreal, Edmonton, and Austin studios will be hard at work creating an entirely new adventure for you to lose yourselves in.

Thanks,

Aaryn Flynn, Studio General Manager, BioWare Canada

Yanick Roy, Studio Director, BioWare Montreal

Aaryn... Yanick... These are real names?

So fab!

Dark Matter is pretty decent, yeah. There's the onset of a real resurgence of space opera on television, and I hypothesize it's studios and networks putting a few chips into the betting pile that Star Wars will temporarily resurrect public interest in the subgenre insofar as television is concerned. As a lifelong (quite literally) space fan, I have high hopes. There was a real rut between around 2007 and 2014.

Dark Matter is crafted by some of the folks who gave us the Stargate television franchise, by the way. Cool stuff.

Err, not to bust your bubble here, but uhhh.   2007-2014 is when ME came out.  I dunno, I don't watch half of what you guys watch, insofar as DS9, Firefly, etc.  Most of them are too cheesy, IMHO.  The last space thing that I latched onto was ST:TNG.  And that was in the early 90's.  So, you can see how happy I was that another genre of space opera caught my eye.

I only recently started, and finished, watching BSG.  So weird to see the woman that you've known for all these many years as EDI suddenly become Caprica Six.

I was speaking specifically on the television side of things. The dearth of good space opera at that time is what helped me latch onto Mass Effect. :P

Anyway, I don't consider those shows cheesy, but to each their own. I knew Tricia Helfer as Number Six long before EDI, so I was thrilled when she was cast for ME2. She is so good in both performances.

I suppose bioware plans on creating a special website for this game. When will it begin ?

Oh boo freaking hoo. This is what is wrong when a company openly advertises they listen to feedback. Everybody starts to feel as if they should have a say in development of a game, and that if a company doesn't listen to one piece of feedback it means they don't listen at all.

How about we get down to reality and realize that a company will always have their own vision for a game, and being as its their IP they have a right to fulfill their vision, and are going to select to listen to feedback that best fits their vision.

Inquisition had multiple races, and also has the worst plot of any Bioware game I've personally played. If they stuck to a human only as intended resources would have gone somewhere else. Mass Effect has never had multiple playable races for SP. There's no precedent for it, so getting this upset is silly.

How could multiple races possibly not water down the storyline? Unless you wanted every playable alien race to simply be a re-skinned human with some minor differences it would totally take away from being able to tell a truly deep human story.

What if the main character is dealing with some Cerberus like entity in the new game? No way that would work with any real depth if you play as multiple races.

This is coming from someone who plays ME3 mp almost exclusively as non-human characters.

No matter race do I still think this Bioware game will be beyond any games from other developers when it comes to social and emotional interaction. Still is a little disapointment about a human centric main character.

What you say about reskinning can be true, of course, but even if Bioware did something as uncharacteristical as doing just a reskin, did I feel very grateful for what was done with Shadows of Mordor by adding a female skin among the skins available; it changed me from a non-player to a player because it showed an intention and a wish to remedy something that many felt lacking. If you've played Shadows of Mordor will you see that a skin was exactly what it was as the movie-clips, the voice and nothing else than the skin was still the same.

It is like going to a store to get something, but the store doesn't have it, but they are willing to try to get it for you, it is that extra-service that is more rewarded than if they actually had the item in the first place. Strange, but true :)

We don't even know that, unfortunately.  *bangs head on desk*   Come on N7 day.  *looks at calendar and sees that N7 day is over a month away*   UGH.  But it is on a Saturday this year.  So, that's kind'a good news.

It'll maybe begin around November/December this year, but even if it does, it won't have much until the middle of next year.

They will begin ( for me ) a month before or at E3 next year

Yeah I knew 'Edi' from BSG which was pretty cool... and I think your right about a bit of Sci Fi resurgence on TV... Ascension, another Tricia Helfer connection, was strangely compelling as well

What happened to that series? Did it get discontinued after those first couple episodes?

Spoiler

It was a miniseries and potential pilot to an ongoing series.  Much like how BSG started out. But in this case the series was never picked up.

As to the spoiler part:  Agreed.

How was the BSG remake series overall? I don't watch much TV anymore and never saw it but from what I read on the wiki, I noticed two things.

1) They really pushed the Humanoid Cylons and made them just robot humans.

2) The show seemed to focus heavily on sex.

FIrst two seasons were really good.

Stumbled a lot in the first half of third season.  Spent most of the second half fixing what the first half broke.

FInal season went completely nuts.  It become pretty clear there never was a plan.  Ending wasn't as bad as Synthesis, but I still felt jerked around.

It was actually very good,  I kept on trying to get into the series when it was on.  Never managed to do it.  So, finally I decided to order the entire 4 seasons + extras.  It was well worth the investment.

EDIT :  Oh, and be prepared for an ending extremely like ME2.  You'll be amazed.  At least I was.

Oh wow, it's awesome that you mentioned Synthesis because when I read the first line and my eye caught "It became pretty clear there was never a plan", I immediately said "Oh, so it's just like Mass Effect."

I think they should tone down whipping out that pistol for no reason. Be a little more mature. Not everything should be resolved by shooting.

I hear the science-heavy writer Chris E'tolier left, someone more Hollywood took his place. I'm gravely concerned. Gravely.

Lost might be a little more on-point. Or maybe that just means that Lost, ME, and BSG are all alike?

Well they in the "The ending was a complete mess and suffered from having no real clue where the story was going"  yeah.

Come to think of it, Lost and ME both had fan ideas adopted by the creators (not sure about BSG). And all three had fan-developed theories that turned out to be far more complicated than what was actually going on.

Yeah as someone else said I don't think it got picked up... and although I agree with the [spoiler] they did have a whole 'space magic' thing going on that could have got them to where they wanted to go...
