So a company can't design a game based on multiple races? I'm sorry I don't see it being as hard as you make it out darkiddd. Challenging yes depending on the narrative you want to tell but it's not hard. Look at DAI for crying out loud! Multiple races and it worked as there's romances, dialogue and everything based on initial character choice. This game will be in a new galaxy so it's actually much easier given they will be running into all new species everywhere.

Your line about a game made by humans for humans was funny though. It's also your opinion that most want to play as a human, not fact. I think after the Shepard trilogy, a lot more than you think would want to play something different.

But that's what it is in the end. Pointy ears or varied design won't change that every "alien" race is going to be a variation of humanity. And as sci-fi proves in its more creative variations, there's absolutely no need to make aliens at all human.

Can't say I'm surprised with this decision, but I'm happy they stuck with it.

A shame for people wanting to play as a different species finally, but maybe it'll ease the pain if I remind you how it felt really off & generally unrecognized in DAI already.

It doesn't.

The Inquisitor felt more like my character than Shepard anyway, so if it was like DAI I'd prefer it to what we have.

I think you proved my point InExile. Thank you. If as you say, aliens are a variation of humanity, then it shouldn't be that hard to implement them. However, it could be that a human main character is essential for the type of story they want to tell. We'll have to wait and see. I just see a lot of lost potential in restricting it to human only for the 4th game in a row. The Shepard comparisons (Shepard 2.0) are out there too now.

Well, as DA:I proves, it isn't hard to implement it. It's just a question of whether it's worth it. I'm not saying it's hard. I'm just saying the complaint about "boring" humans is silly.

Yeah I guess it depends on the story they wish to tell on whether it's worth it. It made sense in the first trilogy and if this game is tied to the others in some way, it could make sense too. I'll still say boring humans and I'm not offended at all if you call me silly :)

Playing as different races could make for a virtually different gaming experience each play through.

Playing as a Krogan who has to build up rage to regen health in a combat situation or playing as a Drell who realies more on speed then brute force.

A little like how playing BL2 as Krieg is a different experience than playing as Maya for example.

Also playing as a different race can help build up a better understanding of the race with unique dialogue options in the main quest. But they've decided not to do that so no point dwelling on it.

Instead we may get the option to buy fish, lots and and lots of fish... Or something equally useless.

Maybe our character can buy pet rocks this time?

I'm glad they didn't do it.

I want a protag where the plot is centered around them and not restricted. The story suffers too much and is zombiefied when you add species selection into it.

Not to mention every reason why DAI is inferior.

Comparing Dragon Age to Mass Effect is apples and oranges.

Dragon Age Inquisition doesn't have ME3's ending black eye but ME2 was better than DA2 so...it's a tie!

Biggest problem I see on Multiple races is where to have drawn the line.

Adding a Turian and Asari as an option is one thing, then someone wants a Quarian and a Salarian then a krogan and so on until we reach Volus and Vorcha probably.

Having a couple of race options with different playstyles and unique dialogue and quest solving options might have been doable, having all options, not so much.

Earlier it was mentioned, playing as a Rachni - that could be totally awesome. Bioware make this happen. pls?

I'd love to play as an asari or quarian, but having only one species option for the PC will allow them to craft a tighter, more coherent and interesting story. DAI was kind of all over the place, and honestly, so was DAO. Everyone had to sort of respond and refer to you in a generic fashion. Hawke and Shepard are more defined, and while some people disliked that, to me it worked for their individual games.

Don't get me wrong, I love my inquisitor, but the more defined the better, for a game like ME.

well I'll probably not rush to buy it then. I'm honestly bored of human protagonists. I'm a human in real life, it's much more fun to play as something different in games and the Mass Effect universe has so many interesting aliens that would be much more interesting it seems like such a shame to waste the opportunity to explore those races from within by actually playing as one of them instead of just talking to them occasionally

I'll probably still buy it eventually, if it seems interesting, but once it's on a budget release and/or a complete with all DLC edition. definitely won't be pre-ordering or paying full retail price for

Yeah, but even playing one in-game.. you still are human. Sure, you may look like an alien, or maybe even speak an alien language. Yet, you are, and always will be human because biologically that is what you are and that is how you act.

What makes some alien characters in various games are so awesome to explore is that fact that you do not have an intimate understanding of what another alien culture values, or how they will act in situation x, y, z like you would with a human. So even though you are playing as an alien, you'd be acting like a human- and that totally throws away the whole point of having aliens in the game to begin with.

The most awesome thing that can happen when immersed in a game full of alien species is to have those moments where you go "Why the **** did you just have to go and do that?", or "I'm in a new situation, and this is what I would do because x, y, and z- but how will my alien allies/foes react? What do they value and how does that relate to what I am doing?".

Sure, you may get a general idea of how a certain species may react, but that initial unpredictability is the very thing makes them alien. Without that you end up with something like Star Wars where you can replace most species with a human and nothing would be lost- nothing would really be different or out of place.

When you played as a different species in ME3 multiplayer- did it hit you that you were now a different species? Or, did it not even register and you played the game exactly as you would have (minus the abilities/powers) if you were playing as a human?

I was really hoping to play as another species. I don't feel right playing the romances with aliens unless I'm alien. I know most of you can get past that but I just can't. I feel like it hurts the replayability and I'm missing parts of the story if I can't experience every storyline =/

ME is a more famous franchise than DA, with ME2 being the most praised Bioware game ever, so its not debatable.

I'm relieved they stuck to the human protagonist. I just couldn't imagine how ME would have handled the difference between the races well. A Krogan doesn't act like an Asari who doesn't act like a Salarian - meaning to do it well, they pretty much would have had to change all the dialogue throughout the game to reflect the specificity of each race. For instance, I couldn't imagine playing a Krogan without a "headbutt interrupt" option. Which wouldn't work as well for my Salarian. The worst thing they could have done as far as I'm concerned is add all the races and make the impact largely cosmetic. I don't care about looking Krogan if I can't roleplay Krogan.

Humans are also the most versatile lore-wise. They can be combat-based, biotic-based, tech-based, and thus offer options for all playstyles.

Sure it is. I don't think Shepard turned out well. Thus saying being human-only turned out well is debatable.

Aww :( i was actually hoping for like 3 or 4 playable races this time around. Lets at least hope its like 2 centuaries in the future or so, so the only returning characters are either Asari or Krogan.

Approve! Yesssssss!

I do feel bad for hardcore RPers or anybody who wished to play as anything else, but I feel like the more vague you have to be, the more the story suffers. Male/female is good enough for me, because at least they can make a strong story without having to fit any species in it.

Haven't met any biotic Salarians or Quarians. Or tech-based Asari.
