okay...after more than a minute of thought....

I would be okay if humans are to be the ONLY main character......ONLY if we could switch between the characters like DA:I. then it would a okay.

AND/OR

MP allows A LOT CUSTOMIZATION. then imma be all up in MP playing as my beloved asari.

The Shepard 2.0 N7 has already been proven to not be the protagonist, so those complaints are also null and void.

Shepard 2.0-template N7 as a teammate?   sounds nifty

I'm fine with this, as long as we get decent voice actors. (Still hoping for Natasha Little).

Although I was hoping to play as a turian or a quarian.

100% disapproval. The ONE thing that could have convinced me to buy this inevitable piece of garbage would have been the opportunity to play as the non-human species.

Highly approve, giving race choice in BioWare games, for me, waters down far to much

well, i kinda hope they go the witcher route and define the character slightly more....or make the background you choose more meaningful.

I strongly approve of only human protagonists! This is great news!!!  :D

This will allow Bioware to write a much deeper and more meaningful story, not to mention that they won't need to waste tons of resources on different voice overs, animations, character models, etc.

How long have we been asking for the option to play as an alien? How long?

Like...

****!

I understand, though. Just don't like it.

You're free to see it that way but I disagree.  DAI proves that just tacking on multiple races doesn't equal the best experience.  If giving us a human PC keeps them focused on telling us a better story. I'm all for it.

I guess that kills my hope of playing an Asari Justicar.

There's no option to roleplay in MP. The "playing as an alien" was playing as a human with a different skin.

The roleplaying is limited (at least in ME3, who knows what they are doing for Andromeda) but it was definitely not the same playing as a human with a different skin. I don't think a lot of people appreciate just how much the gameplay changes with a different alien for a base.

You have different health and shield values, different dodges, different melee abilities, different damge multipliers, different movement speeds, what classes you can pick and what powers are available, special powers like rage, regeneration, not being able to take cover etc.

Now in general...

People are making the argument that it is a waste of resources, but there is very little that can give such a large and positive amount of gameplay variety as introducing more playable species, especially when they already have to add all the animations and design for multiplayer.

Given that we spent the last 3 games playing a human orientated a story I think it was time to branch out and do something different. Yes, their is more work to add to the story to make it as immersive as it can be, but I would personally prefer that work to be done over a huge number of other things.

Two PC models = exponentially cheaper, faster animation cycle = more cutscenes / animated dialogue.

I'll take that tradeoff every time.

Ye I prefer human too, though it'll be weird not playing Shepard. Really weird.

These sorts of threads are always such an emotional roller coaster ride. I don't either either way. More Mass Effect! Yay!

I disapprove, or let's just say I'm disappointed, because I am not terribly surprised. I would have really loved to play as something other than human now that Shepard's story is over. I will still pick it up eventually, as I can't say no to starting another custom avatar, and following that character's adventure through another journey in this universe.

On a side note, I am always surprised by people using Dragon Age Inquisition of an example of why race selection is bad. Are most people unaware that the race selection was added as a late addition and not from the ground up? That game was made around a human protagonist. It is especially glaring if you try to run through as a Dalish Elf, and see that there is plenty of dialogue that wasn't corrected for the race. If the race selection had been available from the beginning, I doubt Inquisition would be referenced.

well I'll probably not rush to buy it then. I'm honestly bored of human protagonists. I'm a human in real life, it's much more fun to play as something different in games and the Mass Effect universe has so many interesting aliens that would be much more interesting it seems like such a shame to waste the opportunity to explore those races from within by actually playing as one of them instead of just talking to them occasionally

I'll probably still buy it eventually, if it seems interesting, but once it's on a budget release and/or a complete with all DLC edition. definitely won't be pre-ordering or paying full retail price for

Humans seem like the best option for the Mass Effect Universe, especially when they're trying to make their mark on the universe. I loved my Shepard, so I approve of this decision. I'll just need to remember that new Mass Effect's protagonist isn't Shepard.  :P
