1. Weird. Seems on the other thread that you're not okay with them leaving the Milky Way. Yet here, you're actually defending their use of a cliche (once again) so that they can leave the Milky Way.

2. Sorry, I can't get behind this mentality that you and some others believe. I.e. that every story is a cliche. There are plenty of completely original stories out there.

Name 5 stories that are completely original and rely on no tropes or cliches.

How can anyone be arguing about Andromeda's story, plot, anything?

We barely know anything about the game.

We know enough to form the basis for an opinion. New setting, new cast of characters, etc. And if the leaks are at all valid, we have a healthy amount of the plot itself.

Just for the hell of it, what would you consider an original story? I'd like to cross reference it with TV tropes to see just how many hits I'd get.

We know a fair bit thanks to the leak.

Wormholes? Maybe not. An "Ark Ship"? Very much so.

From a narrative/plot aspect, I wouldn't leave/runaway from the Milky Way to begin with. So, nothing need be hand-waved on that front seeing as how they have already established a rich setting fertile for plenty of more stories within our own galaxy.

I couldn't care less about how much more realistic the wormholes are than Mass Relays (and I never implied such). But I'd prefer they'd stick to their established lore instead of defaulting to the most commonly used work around.

You complained about wormholes being a stale plot device but now insist that you don't care about it at all once someone has explained to you exactly why wormholes are often used by writers.

Okay, good - then I guess that means you admit that the only reason this thread exists is because you're butthurt about the game not being set in the Milky Way, all while attempting to keep up some ridiculous pretense that this is about your dislike of seeing sci-fi tropes allegedly being used in the (still unreleased) game (which we still know very little about) - a position that you're trying to support by claiming that you can somehow divine every sci-fi trope that the writers may have used based solely on a trailer that's under two minutes in length and has zero dialogue!

Name 5 stories that are completely original and rely on no tropes or cliches.

No thanks. If you can't think of a story that doesn't base it's entire premise on a cliche(like ME3 and now MEA) then there most likely isn't any convincing you that whatever I name isn't based on one.

A trope can be overused to the point of cliche. Tv tropes calls them "dead horse tropes."

http://tvtropes.org/.../DeadHorseTrope

I think one of the best examples might be "black dude dies first." If a trope gets to the point where it's being mocked in most parodies of its genre, it's probably an overused/cliche trope.

That isn't to say I think OP has backed up their accusation that this game promises to be some kind of cliche storm. I don't.

Just for the hell of it, what do you consider ressurection through genetic engineering, superweapons aka "I win bombs", and ark ships? Do you find them original?

About as original as any story you could name, had you actually answered the question.

There is a difference between using tropes in stories, relying on cliche, and writing wholly original stories

there hasn't been a truly original story for a good 2000 years

If the game turns out to be great fun, who gives a volus' cloaca about cliches?

Please, quote where I suggested that this was going to be a "cliche storm"? I'll wait....

All I did was convey my disappointment that the entire premise of the game is decided by this trope. That they are using this cliche in order to leave behind the setting they've established.

Seems alot of people are taking my OP out of context. And then others take those out of context interpretations and put words in my mouth. Thanks for continuing the trend.

The difference between "using tropes" and "relying on cliches" is incredibly thin and highly subjective.

One man's archetype is another man's stereotype.

 Oh I see....

So we're going with the whole absolutely literal interpretation of what's "original". Extremist. Okay then. I guess original should never be used when describing anything fictional. All been done before. Like parallel universes. Anything that can happen already has somewhere. And so everything that will be written will never be original. In that case, I guess I'll just continue repeating my distaste with their reliance on cliches. Which was clearly and simply expressed in the OP.

The first three Mass Effect games were rife with cliches, in fact it was part of the charm.

That would be worth it just for the **** storm that would inevitably follow.

Dark energy could be an interesting enough threat in and of itself, so long as it's not attached to the Reaper agenda.

I apologize. I'll be very specific. You called it, "A dependency on taking overused tropes."

A cliche storm is what I would term a story with a dependency on overused tropes. I used my phrase to quickly summarize what your sentence describes in my own words. If you think that's cheating or isn't true to your intent in this discussion, then I retract my phrase entirely, and I'll try to avoid rephrasing anything you say.

I don't believe that there's enough evidence in front of us to denote any kind of dependency on overused tropes in this game.
