Because it was either that or Nickelback.
I don't believe in the death penalty, but I think that might require an exception.

Remember the old DAO trailers? It could always be worse.
Yea, it could worse. It could be a trailer with Justin Bieber music.
The music and the cowboy theme is great!! I am so hyped for Borderlands Andromeda.
Now, if Handsome Jack was there to welcome me to Andromeda, it would be great.
Somebody got a problem with Johnny Cash?
I like it therefore it was a good choice.
The music in the trailer was perfectly fine, it is just the open world vibe that is turning me off a bit.... I am really getting tired of these modern "open world" hiking simulators with low production values and copy-pasted filler content.
It kinda reminds of the theme from Firefly, but beyond that can't really tell without knowing more about the game.
This!
I immediately thought of the show when it started playing.
I bet it was the same person who chose Danger Zone for Plants vs Zombies.

I think the issue was more that the pacing of the trailer didn't match the pace of the music, than any thematic issue. Prey 2 did it better.
Well, the impression I got from the music in the trailer is that it's not mass effect. To me, the music from the original trilogy is so defining it's like the art style of the game. That said.. cryptically, they also mention the N7 in the trailer is not the PC. Anyone thinking that perhaps that's the antagonist? Perhaps they're using N7 as a means to resurrect human dominance, much like cerberus?
I came away from this trailer quite disappointed, and really thought to myself, that I think I liked last year's "we're working on the next game" better. All because of the music. But I'm interested in what's going on.
Can anyone tell what the N7 character is running in charging at? They look humanoid (hurr hurr, so do batarians and asari in armor) but the shape of the armor almost look human as well, or my first impression was collector. Not saying collectors are in here.. but it almost looks as though there's civil unrest?
Beware: lots of suppositions and wild random thoughts ahead. Proceed with caution!
I understand some of you may not like the idea of a "space wild west"/exploration centered game, but to be honest I wasn't expecting a somewhat linear story in the same sense the original trilogy had. We won't have a new "Shepard"-like hero. Most probably it will be a generic "space cowboy" with the mission to explore the Andromeda galaxy, sent by the Council/N7 academy/remnants of Cerberus/whatever, as a plan B in case the war against the reapers is lost. Having said that, I also suppose either ME:A happens at the same timespan of ME2 and 3, or the characters were kept in some kind of cryostasis (remember Javik?) during the trip to Andromeda and are woken up upon arrival, at an unknown time. Since they were far away, they were not affected by the RGB magic from ME3.
With all those things, I could see a canvas for lots of Star Trek-like stories to unfold... Y'know? "Space... The final frontier..." ... With the voyagers of the U.S.S. Enterp New Normandy facing new adventures, fighting against unknown dangers... You get the spirit.
I really think we shouldn't expect the new Mass Effect to be too similar to what it was. I don't think they would make "Shepard 2.0 with a vengeance" for the new series. Specially considering some of us got way too invested in the last one.
BTW, yeah, I made all those suppositions from a two minute teaser. And I didn't read any tweet or news about the game, so maybe some of the things I wrote here are already known to be wrong. Take it all with an ocean worth of salt, and as pure fanfic, because that's what it is... And sorry for my poor English.
I don't agree with americanization, but being Cash's music...well, it could have been worse. Like for example:
That's a pretty awesome version of achy breaky heart. It's better than Billy Ray Cyrus and his mullet haircut ![]()
I've liked the choice of music for the trailer (and you guys are overthinking it, this was just the first trailer), remembered me of Firefly and Cowboy Bepop.
Also, Johnny Cash is awesome.
Yeah, looks at this Blade Runner trailer. What a stupid terrible song "If I didn't care" from the Ink Spots. I mean what does it have to do with Blade Runner and scifi?
end sarcasm
I liked it, even more so because I thought I was being trolled at first.
Yippee Kyaeahhh [edit]
Loved the Music choice. Cash is Class.
The wild west music makes complete sense if you read the leak...
I loved the music choice, because Cash is timeless, and it works!
Bioware seems to have developed a knack for using unconventional music for their trailors (such as the "What A Wonderful World" cover for DA:I) and I think it's fabulous.
It shows them thinking against the grain, and how much they take pride in what their games stand for, in terms of storytelling, aesthetic, as well as the unique and timeless legacy both franchises have established.
When they chose that eerie cover of Louis Armtrong's classic for DA:I's gameplay trailer, it conveyed the beautiful chaos of Thedas, and perhaps signified the increased focus on exploration for the game (unfortunately the result didn't deliver lol but A+++ for marketing it)
Johnny Cash's Riders in the Sky seems to forebode ME4's content through its lyrics, as well as its aesthetic, by signifying old Western themes of the drifting cowboy, anarchy/conquering the wild, and exploration. Similar to how Johnny Cash's music and voice is so incredibly legendary and stylized, the Mass Effect franchise also returns to the spotlight with its irreplaceable and iconic image, but with a new layer of edge and grit that is reminiscent of the enigmatic cowboy gunslinger.
That is atleast how I received it, and I applaud Bioware for surprising people with its unique artistic thinking. ![]()
I'll repost this here too.
"I fly a starship
Across the universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again..."
I don't know I think Johnny Cash can be relevant to a space opera
That and I think others are right in that the lyrics to the song "Ghost Riders in the Sky" are telling a little bit about what the new game is going to be about. Now we just have to pick it apart. ![]()
And Johnny Cash transcends all genres and is timeless. Anyone with proper taste in music knows that. ![]()
Cash is my favorite musician but he's about the last thing I think about when I think "Mass Effect". Really weird choice
Johnny Cash is awesome. I have actually meet him in person and he is very nice
I'm more of a metal fan, but the music for the trailer was spot on.
Inspired choice.
In the end, it was to establish a wild frontier theme, but the fact was that it only clashed with the visuals. We saw no wild frontier, only future-advanced soldiers shooting at blurry barely on screen enemies. If they are aiming for a Firefly like vibe, the visuals most certainly missed the memo.
It's not the kind of music I would listen to but I enjoyed it with the trailer.
Yippieee yieee ooooooh!
Yippieee yieee yeeeeee!
It means I liked it, it fit well with the trailer. Plus Johnny Cash! ![]()
