They've never been great. Apart from KoTOR and maybe Jade Empire. The main narrative of BioWare games have always been riddled with cliches and scif tropes. Even my beloved Mass Effect 2's main narrative was not great, sure it was solid, but nothing special. What made ME2 so great was the AMAZING character writing and plot lines. NOT the main narrative.

So lay off BioWare when it comes to actual writing narratives. They're better than most. Really. They are.

Thoughts?

I believe this is what is referred to as a "back-handed compliment."

Well, I agree on the characters being the standout part. And I like the ME2 most for being a character centric game. Hudson explained it best. "the funny thing is that people will say 'other than gathering your crew and building your team and getting ready for this mission, there's not much story there.' But that is the story."

Not really, because I old Baldur's Gate, Kotor and ME2 as top 20 and in the case of ME2 and Kotor, top 10 or 5 games ever made.

The strength of bioware was not just the narrative but in the ability to populate the world with details, with lore enough so that you feel like that world could be real.

Even KOTOR is mainly noteworthy for the twist.

BioWare main narratives are vehicles to encounter interesting characters and civilizations. That's about all I expect from them.

Well, in that case. Then ME2 has one of, if not the best, gaming narratives and plot lines ever made.

Bioware storylines tend to be cliche, but that is fine, what Bioware does well and what is their greatest strength are the companions. In all their games, the companions and their quests are what makes the games stand out.

Also there is no such thing as a tropeless story, every story uses tropes. The Avengers, one of the most fun movies and highest grossing movies, uses a lot of cliches but it did well.

Agreed, which is why DAI was actually better than I expected in this regard.

I agree that the main plotlines to Bioware games are full of cliches. However, as you pointed out, their characters are incredible. Bioware is also very good at world building. They just need original plots beyond the saving the world from some ancient threat cliche.

Sir, it's probably going to become very, very relevant in the coming months.
