Are you guys hoping it's the start of a new trilogy or a stand alone title?

I'll be honest, if we find out ME:A is a stand alone story, it's gonna bum me out. To me one of the defining traits of Mass Effect was that it was a grand story that stretched across a generation. One of the best things to look forward to in the next game is taking control of Commander Shepard again, and reunite with our crew we love so much. Continuing our story was probably the most definitive thing about the trilogy.

So I personally am really holding out hope that this is the start of a new trilogy. I want a new series to really invest myself in over the 8th Gen. Given the premise of exploring a brand new galaxy though, I'm having my doubts about that.

I'm sure it's part of a series. I don't understand why its called Mass Effect if it seems like its going to have very little to do with any of the originals though.

I'm hoping for another trilogy (although one with  better ending).

Bioware proven to suck at stories across titles so I'm really hoping it's a standalone.

I want both?

allow me to explain, I want the story to stand on its own. Have its conclusion, but we are going to a new galaxy, so I want this to be the first in a game set there. Have its story but also one that wraps up nicely while leaving the door opened for sequels.

'Cause it's set in the same universe?

Like how everything 'Star Wars' is called 'Star Wars', no matter how far removed from the original trilogy it is?

On topic, I'm game for another trilogy. Or a standalone. You know, whichever.

This. Bioware is not good at doing stories. They're great at characters, but just as DA2 proved, sequel characters will be in the shadow of original characters.

They are eventually going to go back to their original characters, but it'll take a lot of time.

I don't care either way. I like the continuation of the characters story as seen in ME1-ME3.  But, I'm ok with the Dragon Age model as well.

I really liked being able to play as Shepard across multiple titles, so I'd like to be able to do that again with a new character. But if it is a stand alone title, I'm fine with that too. Just give it to me!

One of the best things about the mass effect trilogy was being able to carry your save files across games. Its one of the things that makes mass effect so special.

I hope it crashes hard enough to make them go back to the Milky Way

It's a stand-alone.

They're going the Dragon Age route with it.

Carrying over saved game data was also a major problem for the conclusion of the trilogy. Too many variables, too many details, too many plot holes, not enough time to implement and execute something that did justice to the promises made.

I don't know if I'd attempt to do the same thing again in a new trilogy.

In my experience, the video game industry does not lend itself to trilogies, cliffhanger endings, stories that are incomplete in a single game, etc.

It just doesn't work the way it does with film and television. If you start a long, multi-year project in film or TV, you don't have to worry much about the industry changing everything after you start. With a video game, you can start, and before you finish, the engine, company, or even the hardware you were designing for could all change completely.

I suspect that even if this game is the start of a new series, this game's plot will be self-contained, but without having major decisions that rock the whole setting like the original trilogy's ending did, leaving it wide open to have more games and more stories.

I hope it's a new trilogy, Mass Effect was a brilliant space opera, a la Star Wars, and I want another one.

Edit: I agree with some others though, I would like this story to be slightly more of a personal story, rather than a trilogy where the whole galaxy is resting on your shoulders. It really got a bit depressing towards the end of Mass Effect 3 where you would keep failing, whilst watching millions of people die because of you.

It's not about abandoning the tradition, its about limiting the scope and toning down the promises. Also I doubt most players even know the plot of Mass Effect thouroughly. Usually the are hoping from hype train to hate train and vice versa, not really knowing what is going on.

The original Mass Effect trilogy was very successful.

Stand-alone, and stand-alone from here out. I realize how epic the original trilogy was, but I only need one game to care about the characters, and the save import thing leads to more headaches than it's worth.

That is surprisingly wrong. All the game industry wants these days are sequels upon sequels upon sequels.

I dunno, if Bioware can learn from the problems that arose from save imports of the ME1-3 then I think they could make another trilogy that didn't turn into a clusterfuck by the last game. If I care about characters, I want to see more of them, I hate the idea of caring about the characters and then never seeing them again  :(
