I just picked up Inquisition, at level 9 right now and playing an Elven mage though I'm not entirely feeling my build so I'm planning on doing a re-spec but I don't want to do that if I don't need to get rid of any. I want to do a build where I feel she's the dominant one in the team. My current build is like this:

Spirit:

Barrier, which I almost never use.

Storm:

Chain Lightening+Upgrade

Storm Bringer

Gathering Storm

Static Cage+Upgrade

Inferno:

Flashfire

Immolate

Frost:

Fade Step

What difficulty are you playing? Where are you in the main quest (trying to avoid spoilers)?

It's hard to advise without knowing where you are at, but without knowing, who in the party is outshining your mage? That will give us a hint about what's not working in you spec.

Oh, and by the mid-game, mages can easily hold their own. You just have to stick with them through their awkward adolescent years.

I literally just walked into Skyhold for the first time. Blackwall seems to be outshining the entire team and Bull is too fragile an alternative, even Sera despite me having all the poison abilities and the first three in archery.

Playing on Normal right now.

Nothing wrong with your mage pre spec at the moment though flashfire is really not worth it. If you need a single target control spell take winter's grasp which leads to mana surge (see bellow). Try bying good schematics and get tier 2 or 3 crafting materials. And mages are pre level 10 somewhat underpowered.

On normal barrier is optional really.

Barrier does really shine if you take mana surge from frost tree for free casts of more barrier or expensive spells like lightning cage. Or go fire with chaotic focus to create massive immolates and fire mines.

Generally I go for lightning cage through the other branch (energy barrage) of lighting tree. Pretty soon you will find there are better things to use than chain lighting (wall of fire or walking bomb/ stonefist) unless you take Knight enchanter. Energy barrage and static cage will always be useful to stack massive damage on boss single targets. And the passives on that side of lighting are better. Stormbringer is not as good as it sounds.

If you like the concept of a front line warrior mage go ke and respec to fire and upgraded barrier for massive barrier enhanced fire mines but that will be overkill on normal.

If you like a classic mage aoe nuker go Rift mage.

If you enjoy a control focused mage and enjoy playing with rogue party members more than warriors go necro and fire / ice and panic or freeze everyone for your rogue party members to dismember everything. Blow up fools caught in static cage with walking bomb into little chunks.

Skyhold means specializations, which means now you will be able to hold your own. Only Sera can outdo you, at least as far as damage output goes. You can just swap Sera out for Varric if don't like the competition -- not that Varric is any kind of slouch, you just have more options with putting him into a supporting role, if you want.

I agree with @ottffsse, Rift Mage specialization is the easiest to play in the first PT and gets ridiculously powerful around level 16. Knight-Enchanter is arguably more powerful right from the start, but playing KE optimally means paying more attention to detail. It's like the difference between driving a Hummer (Rift) vs driving a Bugatti Veyron (KE). You can drive either one, but you are not going to get the maximum performance out of the latter without some training and skills. Whereas with the Hummer you just point it at something and run it over. :)

Necromancer, as mentioned, works better in collaboration with other party members, but that doesn't sound like what you want.

And you should respec when you get your specialization in any case. You'll want to move points into the specialization.

Barrier is great for things like mana regen with the right passives, even when you're tank is doing their job and you don't need the protection much - consider it a buff.

Also keep combos in mind - say if an enemy takes additional damage while in static cage, then perhaps following it up with energy barrage for lots of hits and bonus per hit.  In other words, build a spell tree where each spell/passive compliments other spells, rather than just stands alone. (Winter's grasp is amaaaayyyyzing for you warriors and rogues BTW)
