Well, there is eezo, which is essentially space lyrium, and technology that can slingshot large objects across lightyears in an instant. I always wondered if that thing in the concept image was some sort of hypergate that's more advanced than the relays of the old franchise.

So, just the relays again, but this time under a new name.

Because they are abandoning a fleshed out universe that we've become immersed in and attached to.  It didn't need to continue Shepards story or even involve the Normandy crew, but an entire other galaxy means there shouldn't be ANYTHING from the original trilogy present, which means its not really Mass Effect.

Also, as Iakus said, none of this should be possible. The mass relays were destroyed, stranding most if not all of galactic civilization in Earths solar system.  The only explanation is these are people who already were exploring/got lost outside of the Milky way before the Reaper wars.

I suppose they could retcon the Reapers out of the time line and just call this an alternate universe. Hell, it worked for Superman: Red Son from what I've been told.

I don't know why anyone expected otherwise

My main issue is that they are still calling it Mass Effect, when "Mass Effect" is reaper derived tech in the Milky Way.  So the name makes no sense for a new galaxy.  It should be entirely new tech, which nullifies the name.  There shouldn't be anything "mass effect" about this game.

Its the equivalent of the Resident Evil series keeping the name even when it doesn't make sense anymore (They stopped being in a single Residence with the second game), but at least that had the excuse of the series actually being called Biohazard, which makes more sense across all games.

Mass effect simply pertains to the effect of the technology. If element zero is still used to create a mass effect field, and there are still biotics, then there's still a "mass effect" going around.

instead we have the person responsible for the ME3 mess and the utterly atrocious comics that followed it, and the lead writer of Halo 4 whose sole accomplishment is "Not as bad a writer as Karen Traviss"

i'm truly glad of what they're making so far and what they could accomplish, you and others are like the people complain about when choosing Heath Ledger for the joker.

you would want to be something like this the end

Actually, there has been nothing that confirms we're playing as a N7 soldier. They've already stated that the N7 in the trailer is not the player character.

The N7 logo is pretty iconic now, they probably used it for product recognition, you see the N7 and you instantly think Mass Effect, much like how one associates lightsabers with Star Wars.

I have to disagree. It's as annoying as when people call the person who opposes the hero a "villain" in fiction, with no regard for the fact that often that person has no connection to a farm at all!

We all know words can mean one thing and there's absolutely no justification for evolving meaning.

Admittedly, It's not like biotics (for example) stop working in a new galaxy, do they?

Except based on what it seems, it is the same universe and it uses the same principles that were named Mass Effect. None of that changed.

Personally, I don't get the question in this thread as they are not, as far as we know, ignoring the original trilogy. It seems to take place in another galaxy and, from what I've heard and speculated, it seems that these are refugees from the Reaper attacks who left before they were possibly defeated. If this is true, it is a brilliant continuation of the original trilogy, spinning from the events from it while allowing the world that was borne from the final choice in it.

Thats my problem with it too

It looks interesting but its just not Mass Effect

I would like it a lot more if this was a completely new IP, its reminds me in a way of Assassin's Creed IV there was no need for it to be a AC game since it had nothing to do with it at all (apart from forced references) it was a great pirate game but they still named it that because of AC's popularity

Seems like the same thing is happening with Andromeda

this isn't a controversial casting choice

this is taking the franchise to an entirely new galaxy because the writers are too scared/too incompetent to write a story in their own damn universe

Oh well, populating Andromeda seems to be pretty fun, at least on concept, the PC will surely have a blast.

Pre ordered.

Well, maybe there are Mass Relays in Andromeda. When asked about it today, Bioware said they couldn't answer that yet.

But the humans in Andromeda would still use mass effect technology, wouldn't they?

Where was this asked?

Here: http://arstechnica.c...fect-andromeda/

We asked whether there were the series’ signature mass relays in the new galaxy—after all, how else would players cross the millions of light years between the Milky Way and Andromeda? "I don’t think we can get into that," said Flynn

For reasons entirely unknown to me, honestly.
