I desperately want a tough, "hardened", female soldier who's aggressive, takes no ****, and isn't afraid to speak up when she's got a problem with something, even if it's just in private. A little like Zoe from Firefly. And for the love of all that I hold dear, please make her bisexual or a lesbian.

Essentially, I want a cross between Jack from ME and Iron Bull, with some Zoe from Firefly thrown in.

Hoping: female or male quarians

In all honesty, I'm expecting more of the smaller 6-8 person squads from ME1 and 3. There will probably be a human of each sex, your krogan, your male fanservice character (probably asari) and then a couple new species companions. Especially not expecting a geth or quarian because of the obvious and uncomfortable questions that would have to be ignored (assuming either are included at all).

I'd love to see a tough Salarian in our squad this time around. I loved Mordin but I'm ready for a Kirrahe type to be in my group.
I don't want another asari. We've had one every game. I'm ready for something new but I suspect that this won't be the case. I just hope she won't be the obligatory bisexual female LI again.
A lady Krogan would be awesome but I'm fairly confident it won't happen, especially of the leaked survey is true.
I'd also like to learn more about the Batarians, so it would be great to have one as an ally too.
Outside of that, I'm open to anything really.
Also, Artifice, I agree. My favorite thing about upcoming Bioware games is speculating who the companions/squad will be and what their class/roles will be. I lost dozens of hours doing that for DA: I.....

Yes! I would love to see a Batarian squad member because almost all the Batarians that we've encountered in Mass Effect have been thugs or terrorists so it would be really cool to see something like a nerdy tech expert or biotic to break the stereotype.

Same with the Krogan! I want a Krogan that isn't a bounty hunter like Wrex was or inherently violent like Grunt. Someone like Eve would be a cool-a more relaxed, less hot headed Krogan than we've generally seen so far. I want a Krogan and Batarian that's like what Varric is to the dwarves in Dragon Age.

And yes a really tough Salarian would be cool, maybe like a bounty hunter or assassin or something like Tazzik.

I heard there are going to be at least 7 squadmates (correct me if I'm wrong) so I would like to see this combinations:

1. Quarian Soldier.

2. Krogan Engineer

3. Turian Sentinel

4. Human Adept

5. Asari Vanguard

6. Batarian Infiltrator

7. Another human - probably one of the combat classes.

If the survey is correct, only 7 squadmates doesn't sound that good, there would be already 1 female human and 1 male krogan from them so only 5 remain. Likely there would be human male too, maybe N7 one from trailer. Then 4 remain, hopefully aliens, but not really space to have many alien species especially when new one's are introduced.

Hopefully Bioware decides to add more.

Oh screw it, I'll jump on the bandwagon but first a few things. I'm assuming that as this game is in the future and familiar races exist that shouldn't if certain conditions are met in Mass Effect Three that the following conditions are true:

- The Genophage Cure was not sabotaged thus explaining the existence of Krogans far into the future when they would have all died out.

- Quarians survived, but suffered heavy casualties in the fight to reclaim Rannoch whether they succeeded or not is likely left vague or unknown.

Zarr, the Krogan Mechanic (Actually Sentinel):

Background: A Krogan raised by quarians. . .not an easy task, mind you. But they succeeded, and Zarr is a (relatively) docile young krogan who adapted rather well into Quarian Society. Like his 'brethren' he puts a high emphasis on honesty, honor, and selflessness; principles which clash heavily with his Krogan heritage where the strong survive and the weak perish. He is currently on pilgrimage and plans to join the Liveship Marines if/when he returns. Despite not needing to, he wears his own version of the Quarians' suits, decorated with a bright red and white cloth hood that goes over his helmet and back-hump. He supports selfless acts and will get along with more 'Paragon' oriented players and squadmates. His loyalty quest would probably relate with a conflict between learning more of his Krogan heritage or tossing what's he's learned aside in favor of the life he knows. I do not see him as romance-able.

Combat: He's a Krogan (brute strength and endurance) raised by Quarians (Tech, Sabotage, Strategy). Between his own endurance and his suits shields, he's the group's tank. He utilizes Tech Armor alongside a sentry turret to flush enemies from cover and uses a custom-built hammer as an ability, which can be upgraded to either a fire blast or cryo blast on a successful swing. . .don't worry, he also charges and headbutts when enemies get too close! Feel the bloodrage, you bosh'tets! If weapon/class seperation is still no longer a thing then he utilizes A Pistol and Shotgun.

. . .That's all I got so far.

@Panda

If the leak is accurate and we are getting 7 squad members (which, to me, is totally where I want it to be; I actually greatly preferred the ME1 approach over the ME2 approach because that cast felt so inflated that there were numerous permanent benchwarmers on the roster for me), then I think it would go like this:

2 humans (one male; one female - possibly Cora)

1  male (Drack)

1 asari (possibly Cora)

1 new species squad member

That would leave two openings left.  Those could really be anything.

1) If we have to have an asari, it'd be cool if she was more masculine. Like Matriarch Aethyta. Maybe a mercenary?

2) A tough salarian, kinda like kirrahe.

3) Female Krogan, definitely.

4) Male Quarian.

5) Female Turian.

6) Batarian of any gender who isn't a pirate or a slaver.

All the existing species and their various possible personality combinations are all well and good, and I expect BioWare to come up with some interesting ones, but what I would like the most is one or two companions from brand new Andromeda based species.

I imagine being newcomers to the galaxy we're going to need to make allies early on. Good opportunity for something unexpected.

I would like to see less companions than in other Bioware games, but ones that more developed, more real than in previous games. I want the focus to be on quality over quantity with them. ME2's were the most nuanced of the original Trilogy so that should be the starting point but I'd like Bioware to go a lot further than they have before, especially when it comes to romancing any of them because that should be written in to the story and not just there for the sake of it.

ME2 was the high point of the series, and it was built around a large squad. If 7 is the result, and two of them are confirmed one asari and one krogan, then for the rest I want:

2 humans

1 salarian

1 turian

1 quarian

All of this!!! ... except the asari part :P Sorry, I love asari. Wish we could play as one, but if not, I want one in my squad. But a bad ass one like Aria. A hardened mercenary who don't take none a yo sh!t. And let's make her not a romance option. Ah! Lets have her bondmate be a fellow squadie. Female krogan perhaps.

But yes, batarian. And yes, tough Salarian like Kirrahe <3

I'd like the batarian to be female. And also a female turian.

Male quarian, female drell... basically I want "opposite day" from the ME trilogy squadies lol

I've personally found their attempts at darker characters--such as Jack and Zaeed--fell flat for me.  I found Jack annoying and Zaeed boring.  I enjoyed the ones comfortable in their own skins much more, like Wrex or Samara.  I assumed that James would be a dull grunt, but I was surprised by how much I liked him.

A Reaper.

EDIT: Species that I could see not being in the squad due to trilogy 'overuse' would be...

-Turian

-Quarian

-Asari (HA! Kidding. We're getting an asari. I think.)

Anything else is more open. We're seemingly getting a krogan, which would make sense because ME3 mostly gave us a break on that.

Yes people like Quarians and may want another male or even female one, but I'd say their focus is done, at least for this game. We'll see.

Turian may indeed happen, especially with the effort taken to design female Turians, but really, I'm not going to get my hopes up. They seem very 'Milky Way' to an extent that I dunno if they're a priority to be a squad member.

I really hope we get a Salarian. We only got one in ME2 - that's it. In fact, give us a female Salarian we can actually like as a person.

A machine-related party member may be almost a given. No, not necessarily 'Geth' or even 'AI' (as normally considered), or whatever. Could be quite new. Could be related to a new AI species. Whatever the case, I would actually be surprised if we don't get one squad member who isn't related to synthetic life at all.

I would prefer 8 squadmates - not 6, not 7, not 10, not 12. Eight. Maybe nine. 6 to more clearly fit class types (not directly, but mostly), and 2-3 hybrids that would be harder to pin down.

Obviously this won't be the squad, but just for fun...

Human Male Soldier - North American. Gunnery Sgt. Ellison (trained Shepard and Williams), a grizzled Staff NCO and former Drill Instructor at Macapá. Rather than the relative n00b who is less experienced than the protagonist and looks up to him/her like Kaidan or Vega, he has spent over twenty years in the military and fought in both the Skyllian Blitz and Reaper War, is a bit of a hard ass, and not afraid to let the protagonist or other officers know when they're wrong. He should be the stereotypical lifer and someone you couldn't imagine existing outside the military. Think someone similar to Quaritch from Avatar, except enlisted, or Sergeant Major Plumley.

Human Female Infiltrator - Lieutenant. Born in Lowell City on Mars, the child of Eastern European & Iranian immigrants. Evacuated from Mars to the Citadel along with other civilians after Earth was attacked, she later enlisted in the Alliance from the Citadel's docking bay refugee camp. Was wounded and received a battlefield commission for heroism at Firebase Dagger/Ontarom. Pulled strings to get two surviving kid brothers aboard the ark. Not a lifer and plans to leave the military for medical school, but not before helping to find a new home where her family can be safe.

Asari Vanguard - 350 year old Asari commando, from the colony of Lusia. Took part in the defense of the Cyone after the Reaper attack. Sarcastic and has a dry sense of humor. Countless close calls with death have left her with a strong belief in living life to its fullest, and she has embraced the Asari equivalent of an Epicurean philosophy.

Quarian Male Engineer - An artificial intelligence expert who was exiled from the Migrant Fleet for conducting illegal A.I. research, over the objections of Admiral Xen. Lived on Omega during his exile. Later recruited by the Shadow Broker (Yahg) as part of his cyber intelligence network. He remained working in that capacity after Liara seized control, and was one of the Shadow Broker's key assets during the Reaper War. Doesn't know the Shadow Broker's identity but has suspicions of a regime change based on how the organization operated following the events of LotSB. Vital in cracking Reaper code that was passed on to various Council intelligence services, helping to thwart an attack on the Salarian colony of Mannovai.

Batarian Male Sentinel - Born on Khar'Shan. Part of the elite Batarian Special Intervention Unit, he was recruited for a black ops mission that later evolved into the Skyllian Blitz. While serving as an adviser to the mercenary and pirate proxies attacking human colonies, he was wounded and captured during the failed assault on Elysium. He spent several years in Alliance military detention centers, stubbornly refusing to provide actionable intelligence while under interrogation. In the chaos and confusion of the Reaper invasion, he was able to escape from his Alliance holding cell. Stranded on a human world and a firm believer in the old maxim that an enemy of an enemy is a friend, he joined with a band of human civilian refugees in the wilderness and forged them into a hardened resistance cell. Later he was aboard one of the last ships carrying refugees off planet, after being seriously wounded. While he maintains loyalty to the former Hegemony, he developed a grudging respect for humans after spending months fighting beside them.

Male Yahg Soldier- Captured by Batarian slavers who sold him to a Terminus warlord fond of watching slaves fight and kill each other for sport. After several years as a prized pit fighter, he led a slave revolt that murdered his master. Escaped in his master's ship and went pirate. Founded a small colony of runaway slaves turned pirates on a derelict space station where he ruled as their 'king.' Terrorized the shipping lanes of the Terminus for years before losing it all during the Reaper War. Learned of the ark project during a card game with a drunken Salarian engineer, and managed to get smuggled aboard as a stowaway in a cargo container through a bribe. Discovered and imprisoned during the ark's flight. Selfish and aggressive demeanor. He will only serve the protagonist if dominance is first established. (besting him in combat or a high intimidation check)

Turian Female Adept - Spacer, born on the Citadel. A member of the Turian cabals, a battle scarred-veteran of the Reaper War and a lifer. She was stationed on Palaven when the Reapers attacked and spent weeks on the front lines. Severely wounded during the fighting and evacuated to the Citadel for medical treatment, where a lost arm was replaced with a prosthetic. Her mate and child remained on Palaven and were killed during the fighting. Suffering from survivor's guilt.

Whatever we'll end up getting, I want characters that break from the usual stereotypes.

I don't want:

- krogan puncher

- salarian scientist/spy

- quarian tech specialist

- drell assassin

I'd much rather have something like:

- krogan scientist

- salarian biotic specialist

- quarian enforcer

- drell mechanic

THIS! BioWare needs to make this happen

Overuse? There was only one turian and quarian squadmember if we don't count a temporary DLC squadmate, compared to a lot of humans (given), 2 AI, 2 krogan and 3 asari (4 if you are counting that previous DLC). Every other race also got either one or none at all.

We're getting another krogan, I'd put my money on them pushing another pinnochio story, and yeah asari is pretty much a given because god forbid we don't have a gratuitious blue spacebabe even though they have already been represented better than anyone else. Turian female or quarian male would be much better than any of those IMO.

especially if I can collect the latter's bodily fluids.
