I did that. I'm going to have to be cautious about how much excitement I let myself build up.

You didn't take it as hard as some did.  Poor Nefla, I wanted to hug her when the game came out.   :(

Well, I know I'm not getting ME:A right away like I did with DA:I.  I love the game, but the patch cycle was a little nutty.  The game needed it, but it reminded me why I almost never buy a new game within the first 3 months of its release.

And thanks for explaining empaths, Nat and Lady.

You're welcome.   :)

I actually earned the nickname Deanna in high school. People felt like they could come to me with their problems, and usually did at all hours of the night. I never minded though. :P

It would be nice to have an empath, instead of total memory recall. Am I the only one that found Thane incredibly creepy when he did that?

I loved when Thane did that because it's so creepy.
I think it's a subtle beauty in his character. He only does it to memories that should be happy, like his wife. Then he totally makes it dark. He tortures himself for messing up.
Like nightcrawler.

I think if recalled more peaceful memories out loud it would be significantly more comfortable.

I feel a male empath would be interesting. Or a corrupt one. Sensing people's emotions all the time in a war zone could drive you crazy.

That does not surprise me.  And I say that as a fan of Deanna.

I didn't find it creepy necessarily, but I can see where someone might. I do like the idea of something more subtle, and less explicitly "scientific." Asari have this aura of mystique and their abilities are more brazenly space magic like. They're described as inherently angelic in one of the novels, with all this supernatural allure.

I'd just really enjoy also having a male companion a little like that.

  All good.  Just be careful with hype.  I watched a lot of buddies of mine on the DA forums get crushed because they raised their expectations too high.

I did that. I'm going to have to be cautious about how much excitement I let myself build up.

Yep. Keeping my expectations low this time and going to assume they're gonna basically just give us what they gave us last time, (we've already see an asari and male krogan companion, yawn, though I personally feel these are placeholder/example characters); I think the tendency is to go with what sales or what appears to sale... so several "bro" squadies like a male krogan and male turian and some sexy ladies/aliens to romance. /shrug

Don't think my own expectations for DAI were too high; think they were very reasonable but... yep learned my lesson lol!

@Starkin I'll be honest.  The spacebar and I became very close during those scenes with Thane.  It just felt too long, but to each their own.  I didn't like it when Nightcrawler got too angsty either.  <shrug>

I like your idea, but an empath would more likely become overwhelmed by reading emotions during war time.  Now, say something that has a bit of a mind meld (not to the extend of bonding, no need for an Asari 2.0) that has empathic powers melding with someone corrupt/crazy could have interesting results.

Hmm, I think a krogan asari would be nice. Though I'd really like a cyborg of any species asari, and I mean not like Shepard but full on cyborg, maybe something similar to Deus Ex. I bet we'll get squadmates of the new species asari and finally I think the classic asari would be nice.

The mind melding is coming. You cannot scape the asari. You will submit, and you will like it.

there is no such thing as a full on cyborg, you are a cyborg or not. a Cyborg means, part machine and part organic. For example, All biotic Non Asari are cyborgs including A ME1 Biotic Shepard.

I'd like a switch on the morality of the human male and female squadmate. Unlike Kaidan/Jacob "the nice moral guy" and Ashley/Miranda "the ruthless one", I'd like the female human to be more idealistic and the male human to be more pragmatic. Could definitely work for a hardened military veteran. I thought a renegade femShep was lacking like-minded romances.

I've been meaning to respond to some of these, and I keep getting distracted.

I love the whole thing, Vesperia.

This part, in particular, makes me want anti-Kaidan. I adore Kaidan, but that just makes me enjoy the idea of a completely opposite version of him more.

In fact, I think I might write a short story, Mass Effect homage to Stark Trek: In A Mirror Darkly, with a dark!Normandy crew, and specifically a dark!Kaidan.

Quarian Male Engineer - An artificial intelligence expert who was exiled from the Migrant Fleet for conducting illegal A.I. research, over the objections of Admiral Xen. Lived on Omega during his exile. Later recruited by the Shadow Broker (Yahg) as part of his cyber intelligence network. He remained working in that capacity after Liara seized control, and was one of the Shadow Broker's key assets during the Reaper War. Doesn't know the Shadow Broker's identity but has suspicions of a regime change based on how the organization operated following the events of LotSB. Vital in cracking Reaper code that was passed on to various Council intelligence services, helping to thwart an attack on the Salarian colony of Mannovai.

Same here: Love it all. But this was my favorite part.

A corrupted empath.

I want.

Also, Nightcrawler.

I am the biggest fan of Nightcrawler. That comparison makes me like Thane even more.

Please hun, this is ME.  We'll only get one or the other.  You know this.  Besides, with their love of "dark and edgy" romances for female characters, I'm sure we'll get the Nightcrawler option.  Complete with a dead wife and an accidental murder born of a moment of rage/pain.  They might even combine the two, and he'll have a dead wife that he would have accidentally killed.  He'll look alien, but have disturbingly full lips.  -_-

Sorry, I'm a little bitter.  I'll get over it, but I think this no coffee experiment is about over.

YES! Give me my Krogan bro and my Asari lady!

Why its bad if they have 2 companions that have a huge appeal on the straight male gamer?

No, I get it. Some of the LIs have had really excessive amounts of baggage.

But I like full lips.  :P

A drell that isn't a recolor of Thane and has no ninja moves nor is religious. Maybe even female to really spice things up with that species.

Not that I'd mind a male religious drell with ninja moves and Thane's clothes. Drell is my favorite alien species so I'm really hopeful that there'll be at least one major drell character. Extra points if they're a love interest.

I'd love to know more about this Cora character also. Love me some biotic ladies <3

Me too, but I prefer if the guy with those lips didn't look that much like a lizard.  I'm not knocking on Thane at all.  He's a great character and a badass.  When it comes to his looks however, well, I can tell that they struggled to get that right.  Didn't it take something like 3-4 redesigns to get Thane "right?"  He feels...I don't know, like he was focus tested for the ladies in the 18-27 age demographic too much for me.

I can understand the appeal and again, I'm not trying to come down on Thane nor his fans. For me however, it was a swing and a miss.

You know, it would be nice to have a lady similar to Thane, only not as a LI.  Given that all of the lady squad members in the ME series (in the main game, not counting the DLCs) were available as LIs, I'd like to see a lady that wasn't for the next game.

The Drells work for me physically. Normally I'm not big on non-humans, especially as LIs, but Thane's pouty lips and big, sad eyes made my heart thump quite a bit.

So, yeah, I hoping for another male Drell that I can actually romance this time instead of admire from a far, but I would hope his romance is a lot more light hearted than Thane's was. Dead wife syndrome and terminally ill and estranged son is just too much angst.

  Yeah, Thane was a walking trauma ball, wasn't he?  Man, when you lay it out like that, it is pretty bad.   You did win my weekly award for "Making Soda Nearly Come Out of Nat's Nose from Laughing."

I'd probably be open-minded to a drell if he or she didn't scream, "TRAGEDY," with nearly every conversation.

Oh he was. Writers never hide for which audience he was designed though. Personally I never liked drell design, nor human-like nor alien enough to look appealing.

I wanted to steal his coat.  I liked that trenchcoat and his voice.  I like that he's one of the only characters in the series that uses an untranslated word.

I'm a bit different I like Thane as a character.  Quite a bit.  I even like his design.  However, I look at him and I see:

"RED FLAG: DO NOT ROMANCE.  PROCEED TO ALMOST ANY OTHER HUMANOID MALE IN THE GALAXY.  SERIOUSLY, THE KROGAN WOULD ONLY BREAK YOU PHYSICALLY.  RETREAT."

And Bioware totally got me with designing him as LI for straight female gamers, I'm so easy lol ^_^

So much multi-quoting! In my defence, there's lots of interesting things being discussed in this thread.

I am reaaaaally hoping that nobody has a burning urge to tell me about their dead lover tragedy in MEA. Especially in a romance! The moment Thane started talking about his dead wife I just thought "nah, think I'll try one of the others first" in ME2. Particularly when he started having rather vivid flashbacks about her. You are definitely not alone in finding those a little... awkward! It's one reason I haven't gotten around to romancing Steve either.

"Let me help you get over your dead husband so we can make out." So romantic!

I'd rather a Vangaurd. Krogan shaman. We have seen many different kinds of Krogan but I want to get to know a spiritual leader of the Krogan better.

Oh, a shaman! I'd love that. I could listen to Eve/Bakara for hours, talking about the krogan practices and beliefs. She was also so wise and thoughtful, compared to the more aggressive krogan we've had on the team so far.

I'd be thrilled to have a version of Asari with both genders.

I kind of really want a male empath.

I thought Javik was a little like an empath with his touch-and-learn ability. I liked the fact that he could sense things about people who used to be on the ship, and kept having to wash his hands because he was getting a sensory overload. Perhaps less like empathy and more like sensing someone's state of being? I'd be interested in a real empath though!

Would something like DAI's Cole work for you as an empath, or would that be a bit much? He was rather socially inept too.  :P

A bartarian would be nice, but regardless of player choice, most of them were wiped out completely by the Reapers.  If ME3 is anything to go by there isn't a lot of them left, and repopulating is going to be a pain in the butt.  I would have also liked to see a bartarian squadmate, but the events between ME2 and ME3 put the kabosh on that.  I'm open minded though.

I really wanted to have a batarian squadmate before, to do for them what Dorian does for Tevinter. They can't all be enslaver terrorsts, right?  :P But I think I'm getting my hopes up enough by wanted a quarian squaddie again. Wanting a batarian too is just like setting myself up for heartbreak!

I'm all about the space cowboyish squad member. Malcolm Reynolds for ME companion, please.

Oh, yes please. I'd happily take any of Firefly's crew on board. Especially Wash as my new pilot.  ^_^

I hope they avoid just gender swapping the character types from the first trilogy.  Like, "male Quarian engineer", "female Turian bro", "male human solider", "female human sentinel".  I hope they are more creative than that.  I'd rather them give us something completely new.  Give us a Batarian.  Give us an STG Salarian solider.  Give us a Krogan lady!  (although I'm pretty sure that last one won't be happening given the leak).
