When I watched the announcement of the Knights of the Fallen Empire DLC on E3 for Swtor, I couldn't help but feel a measure of disappointment. Not because I truly expected a surprise Kotor announcement, but I realized what potential another installment could have had.
For starters, I would like to express that Swtor was not a terrible game or a tragic disappointment. I actually enjoyed the gameplay and felt it was actually well updated. I feel that it lacked depth, however, particularly with the story-line of Revan. He was too strung out across the timeline and relevant far too long, he was good, bad, good, neutral, bad, dead, alive, here, there; he was out of place in Swtor (in the book as well). It was almost as though this was Bioware's attempt to satisfy older fans for his relative lack of importance and accomplishments within the game. He was defeated by mid-levels and attained literally nothing at the foundry, and then in the expansion he did release the Emperor, but was once again beaten by characters who shouldn't be as strong as him (debatably) in a way that was comparatively undramatic. In my opinion, his death was not deserving to that of another boss in an MMO, but more suit for a death like Malak's, or possibly even as a main character in a single player RPG. It's funny how 12 years (from the expansion release), a better game engine, and an outstanding voice cast created nothing even close to the compelling deaths and significant moments in Kotor.
To digress, I do find some relief in the fact that anything outside of the movies is now non-canon. I know many convey worry over this, but it is actually well founded in that Swtor chapter is now completely imaginative. Of course so is Kotor, but if any sequel were to be made, due to the time that has passed, Kotor would first have to be remastered. Kotor 3 could not just arrive out of the blue with many Star Wars fans having already forgotten it and the newer ones having never played it before. The remastered version could change any number of small points within the original games, even potentially have the two together, though it is likely the main story-lines and outcomes would remain the same or it wouldn't be a "remastered" version at all. With a rebuffed and canon Kotor, the possibilities for a true sequel would become endless, now that Revan's fate, or that of the Exile, are open with a disregarded Swtor telling.
Why release a sequel? Well these next three years would be prime in beginning a project that would rally some older fans (really the younger-mid adults), particularly with the movies being released. Obsidian studios has stated before that Kotor still crosses their minds. The original two games were so good anyway that a remastered version couldn't go too wrong one way or another and is bound to be at least a minor success. A sequel could just simply take off from there. Though this is theoretical, and I will admit I'm pulling it straight out of a hat.
Am I most likely wrong? Yes. Will it happen? Probably not. Am I reaching in the dark and hoping to grab something? Absolutely.
What are your thoughts?
