Without spoiling too much, the biggest Demon's Souls influence is the Mana bar is back. No more attuning multiple copies of the same spell to get more casts, as far as we know. There's a number of other references including the starting armor for the Knight class (it looks almost identical to the Fluted set from DeS), and throughout the world that I think will be very obvious once you see them. Luck is also back as a stat.
And yeah. Tanimura took over the DS2 project about a year before the game initially released, and from what we understand, he wasn't allowed to make any new assets for the base game so he was limited to rearranging the work the previous director had already done. Very shortly after the game released, he started working on the DLCs from scratch, which as you said, is why they're demonstrably better than the main game. I actually feel bad for how much hate the dude got now that we know all this, but none of this info was public knowledge until around the time SotFS released.
Wow. I had no idea any of that was implemented. It's about time they upgraded the magic system, no more dark magic spamming I hope. I also saw something like a blue Estus Flask? I guess that's related to filling up the mana bar. I'm hoping they have a weapon equivalent to the Blueblood sword because that was all I used since the Luck stat was always my throwaway stat if I had nothing else to put my souls into.
Well that's nice then. All I knew is that it was "B-team" which took over DSII whilst Miyazaki was working on Bloodborne supposedly. I only then heard of Tanimura when the DLCs released because they were a lifesaver to the main game, even SotFS was. So I knew there was some mastermind behind it. Good thing him and Zaki are on DS3, I have high hopes.
