At least two other pistols have been built off the Carnifex platform.
It's not necessarily a Carnifex. Hell, it might be something they built on the platform of Carnifex, other than the Paladin and M-11.
I think they just wanted to show a pistol that we would recognize and further illustrate that there are some type of connection between this and the original trilogy.
I don't think it's the Carnifex in particular. Not that other silver one.
The concept art on the blogs make it look more like a streamlined descendant of the Carnifex. Which is cool. After well, we're still using modernized versions of guns designed over a century ago.
