I'm not American, and I'm not a fan of the country genre in general. Johnny Cash is still one of the greatest musicians of all time, because his works transcend nationality and genre.

I'm American and I can't stand country music, but I still like Johnny Cash as much as the next guy.

But the music felt so out of place.

I think they were going for a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe, but failed miserably.

I agree that it was out of place, but,as I said before, I think they wanted to emulate FARWEST's ages.

@Matthias King:  Not everything is just a knock off of something else.

Actually - I felt this was, like all other attempts, a hail to the previous life in the Milky Way Galaxy (and, of course, on Earth) - while the lyrics were obviously indicative of space travel.

Actually - I got a "Chariots of the Gods" vibe - and instantly thought of the idea of these technologically advance peoples coming upon indigenous races that are primitive and asking:  "What do we do with this?"  (Yes, I'm aware giant alien skyscrapers rip up out of the sky in the one cut scene)

But Guardians works because of how ridiculous the whole set up is - it's satirical. I think Bioware missed that part, if they were going for Guardians.

I like it. In fact, I like that part better than the second half of the teaser--where he's jumping and running.

I like the part where the music starts to pull back as he travels forth through that...wormhole thing. I like the part where Cash is saying "Ghost Riiiders iinnn the skYyy" while the character is checking his omnitool, then pulls out his gun.

I like the character's Swagger. I hope we have swagger--in personality, too. He also has good posture.

Did someone say "double barreled Claymore"? Yes, please.

I'm well aware that not everything is a shameless rip-off of something else, but in this case I think it was. I think they saw GoG and the way it somehow worked so well and they decided to try to go for that same vibe, but just missed the mark.

Yes, GoG was a little ridiculous, but somehow it just coalesced into something great. But clearly Bioware thought they could just slap any out of place music over their space setting and end up with the same result.

It felt like exactly what it was: a poor attempt to copy something else.

I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan, and I'm a fan of the Space Western Genre.

But honestly, I kind of agree it felt out of place. Maybe because Mass Effect has always been so distanced from real world music, being filled almost entirely by generic electro beats.

And really, the trailer didn't fee much like a space western. Sure, you've got the desert planet that looks like Monument Valley, and Mr. N7's sticking to the pistol, but the action we see is very removed from a western feel, and the other planets we see kind of hiccup that.

Conclusion: just stick with "Two step From Hell" for the trailers and it will be fine.

That's another good point.

GoG had a strong connection to current music, which is another reason why the juxtaposition worked.

But like you said, ME has always been distanced from modern music.

So all of a sudden hearing Johnny Cash in ME just feels really out of place.

@Mathias King:  I applaud this.  Like real life - fictional worlds should have eras of style/music/etc.

A people so far removed from their homeworlds might have a nostalgic vibe grow in their culture where all things "old earth" would be hip again.

It's been hundreds of years supposedly... the idea of cultures being similar is pretty ludicrous.

Go for feeling badass while walking on a desert planet with Johnny Cash in your ears. Sensegasm.

Or maybe it could go Metal Gear Solid V (based on information revealed thus far) where you can listen to 80's songs on cassette in battle? Why not have your suit have a built in audio player (Garrus had a battle playlist as revealed in Shadow Broker). That way we could have a mix of licensed music from different genres and throwback tracks from the original trilogy.

Cus: FALLOUT! GRR! ARGHLE BLARGLE!11!

Seriously, I would basically feel like Peter Quill if they did this. And I'd love it and give them all my money. (And maybe learn to mod the soundtrack files so I could hear w/e music I wanted while exploring in addition to what they gave me.) Someone needs to give this idea its own thread. If the devs haven't worked it in, yet, they might still have time. In fact, I think I shall.

Mind you, I'm not entirely complaining as I have always hated Mass Effect's music. I am one of the people that was hoping someone would start blaring Blue Oyster Cult during the final assault on Earth in ME3.

Still, it does seem odd.

I hope this thread prompts MORE Johnny Cash music trailers in the future.  If y'all don't think "God's Gonna Cut you Down" isn't a perfect theme for Garrus, y'all didn't even play ME.

Though, if it were up to me...

I know right? It's total nonsense that BioWare would use images of a desert planet that looks like Monument Valley and pair it Western-country music for their ME:A trailer. A trailer that does little more--in the informative sense--than convey a sense of mood. They couldn't possibly have paired Johnny Cash with the most iconic landscape of the Western genre to draw deliberate parallels to what they want the game to feel like. It's totally unprecedented, and a joke, pre-order cancelled until they replace it with a generic licensed Two Steps From Hell track.

I get what you're saying, OP. I'm not a Johnny Cash fan nor do I like the genre however from what we've been given of the Mass Effect universe thus far doesn't seem to fit in with music that doesn't sound "futuristic" somehow (which not one of Johnny Cash's songs sound). That said, I'd like to think the development team had a reason for putting it in the Andromeda trailer (other than someone just happens to like Johnny Cash), and without knowing what Mass Effect Andromeda is really about, I suppose we have to assume it somehow will relate.

Given that the planet looks like Monument Valley and they used a Johnny Cash song, I'm fairly confident in just linking this and saying "probably something like that."

This sentiment I can get behind actually.  I'm just tired of monochrome apocalyptic landscapes in general.  And zombies.  Dear god, am I ever sick of zombies.

I think that kind of factors into it. A buddy of mine who's not a fan of ME looked at the trailer and complained that, out of the planets shown, the desert planet was far and away the least interesting.

So honestly, even for a guy like me - Texas native, Johnny Cash fan, western fan, Firefly fan, it's kind of hard to get excited for another desert at this point. One of the things that has me so hyped for Fallout 4 is that its moving out of the desert.

Pretty sure it was meant to be a headfake since the first picture when the music starts looks like a shot from Arizona or New Mexico. Also, the lyrics are abotu "ghost riders in the sky" and we come from the sky to these planets. We're frontiersmen colonizing this new frontier, which is a theme of westerns. There's a lot of connections already apparent.

But - again - for the reference to make sense you have to even get what "Monument Valley" is in the first place. I'm sure it was done for a theme - but that doesn't quite work when some of your audience is unfamiliar with the theme. So, as I said, for me it evoked images of Fallout New Vegas and my ideas of the American south circa 1980.

Maybe not and this planet is story related.

I hope ME4 isn't about some kind of space western, because if so.... I will be really pissed off.
