Ghost riders in the sky + mass effects makes me hope for something like cowboy bebop: the game. Nothing of that sort can be a bad thing.
This music ? are you serious ?

That would be an amazing game, but I don't get why a country song makes you think of an anime that's basically all about jazz.

And FFS, I don't think the song is actually going to be representative of in-game music - it...is...a...trailer. I suspect that what we'll end up with is a bunch of the usual instrumental stuff that we always get. *rolleyes*
It's the first trailer at that. I love Johnny Cash, and I fully agree that the song could be hinting at the over all theme of the story. However, I am also a little burned out on using pop songs in game trailers. I prefer to hear some pieces of the music that's to come. I appreciate them trying to convey a message without giving away the music just yet, but it is getting a little tired for me personally.
I know it's the early days yet, and there will be a lot more trailers/footage over the next year. So I'm not going to sweat it. I also don't blame Guardians of the Galaxy for the choice of music, not by a long shot. There is about a decade or so worth of games that have done this. I also still stand by BioWare's decision to use Johnny Cash for their first trailer. It at least tries to convey a meaning and it's subtle. I'm sorry, but nothing is going to top DA:O having "This is the New Sh*t" in a trailer.

I guess I don't see the difference between the two. That's probably the best way to describe it: I have exactly the same reaction to each.

I honestly hated the music choice. They should have went with the classic Mass Effect music that fans know and love!

It's a pretty classic space western in terms of everything but the music.

Something more reflective, like Ghost Riders In the Sky, works for me because it's based on a very old story. I feel like they were trying to show us a bit of the overarching theme of the plot. Meanwhile, Manson's track is only meant to show "blood and gritty and edgy," which really doesn't fit the more intricate nature of the plot behind Origins.
I say this as someone that likes Johnny Cash, and liked MM prior to about 2003.

On a related tangent; even if they don't use licensed songs for the in game music, I really hope they put a lot more effort into the music than in previous ME titles. So far all the music in the Mass Effect verse has sucked, so hard.
So if they aren't licensing songs for it, which is fine, I at least hope they put a significant portion of the budget towards developing some quality original tracts.

Because it's not just that. The creator was influenced by a lot of things, westerns included. He called it a "genre unto itself", which included western references, noir, comedy, etc..

Oh, the show was totally a western in motifs. I just don't get how the music leads you to think of cowboy bepop, which didn't really have country music. But it's a bit like listening to ME3 music and saying it reminds you of Samurai Champloo.

The music for the trailer reminds me of Trigun.

Fair enough, yeah. I don't remember music specifically either.
But I think that's all this trailer is trying to convey.. some of those same motifs. Albeit more overtly. And if the lyrics actually play into the themes of the game, that'd be great. But I don't know if they're going for that or not.

Well, at least with the multiple threads about the music the developers have probably head the backlash loud and clear. OST and the game will have none of this. Mass Effect music pretty much made the franchise - I think it should be respected.

Oh gods no. The DA vets just started to recover from a certain poster that kept spamming Cassandra threads for almost 6 months. We don't need to start up in the ME forums as well.
I'm sticking to water, coffee and Dr. Pepper from now on. ![]()

@Mathias King: I applaud this. Like real life - fictional worlds should have eras of style/music/etc.
A people so far removed from their homeworlds might have a nostalgic vibe grow in their culture where all things "old earth" would be hip again.
It's been hundreds of years supposedly... the idea of cultures being similar is pretty ludicrous.
In theory I'm not at all opposed to them using existing music, which helps to ground it by acknowledging that real music actually exists. The problem is that, before now, they never did, so it just feels strange in a ME game.
Ordinarily I would be all for it. It just feels out of place in the series because they've always avoided it before.
That said, I still think the Johnny Cash song was a poor choice. I know they were going for the juxtaposition, I just don't think it worked.
Incidentally, this just lends credence to the viewpoint that this is ME in name only. There's so little actually tying this game to Mass Effect. It's just a new series with a known franchise's name slapped on it.
With how everything is shaping up so far, that's how it feels to me.

Probably.
Should we also preempt blaming EA, Frostbite and political correctness, as well as asking for the game to be more like Fallout 4?

Can we just accept that people will inevitably have different tastes in music and different opinions on what fits what? I for one quite liked the music and thought that it fitted this specific trailer fairly well. Some people will disagree. That is fine.
In any event it is unlikely that this music will make it to the game (although if you could change the music while you were scanning the galaxy map - from the music in the old ME games to Johnny Cash to TSFH to every song used in Guardians of the Galaxy - that would be awesome).

They tried to go the 'fallout route' and it just does not work imo. The song of itself is fine but not for this game. I didn't like it. Still, not as bad as 'This is the new shi*' for Dragon age which was beyond horrendous.

At least they didn't use Ring of Fire
I don't usually like that kinda music but I really enjoyed Ghost riders in the trailer, was epic.
