As has been said, they clearly used that music so that for the first few seconds you thought that it was going to be a new wild west shooter franchise or something. It was a bit of fun designed top throw you off the scent until you realised what the game actually was, with the added bonus of that feeling of exploration of uncharted territory that the wild west evokes. I seriously doubt that the actual game will have a country soundtrack.
My dad always played Johnny Cash for us when we were young. I am from Norway, btw. So yeah this was perfect, it gave a good feeling. It is a teaser! No one ever said it would make it into the game or anything like that. Was just a way to get good atmosphere, i loved it.
That N7 guy is definetly Earthborn because he likes 50's 60's country music. :-)
He is probably proud for that music.
And he gives a damn about what the players think. He must be the ultimate badass!
First, Johnny Cash is awesome, and it being in the trailer is awesome, as we're clearly heading 'west' to a new frontier.
Secondly, they game is a year and a half away, so do you really think the soundtrack is done yet? This is a trailer. Not the finished game. Have you never seen an early movie trailer before? They often use placeholder music. Be thankful they didn't use that overused Mozart piece.
IIIIIIt's trailer music and in no way indicative of what'll be in the game?
I'm not a fan of Johnny Cash myself (and I don't think he's a bad musician at all, different strokes for different folks,) but I found the choice of music for the trailer fitting given the vibe of this being a new frontier.

I hope you 're right
I'm amazed there's so much complaining over a song used in the reveal trailer.
Not all of us who love Mass Effect are quite so narrow-minded in our music tastes. My own range from Punk, Hard Rock, Psychedelia, Classic Hip Hop to Jazz and Classical and yes even old Honky Tonk C&W music. We don't all just listen to techno ya know? Johnny Cash transcended the mere Country label as he also recorded in Folk, Blues, and his early sides for Sun Records included quite a few RocknRoll numbers. That's why musicians across all genres respected him.
Hooyah! You tell 'em Nub!

I'd be pretty happy if there was a choice of having that music play every now and then, ala ME2/3 Cabin Music. Go for feeling badass while walking on a desert planet with Johnny Cash in your ears. Sensegasm.

Or maybe it could go Metal Gear Solid V (based on information revealed thus far) where you can listen to 80's songs on cassette in battle? Why not have your suit have a built in audio player (Garrus had a battle playlist as revealed in Shadow Broker). That way we could have a mix of licensed music from different genres and throwback tracks from the original trilogy.

Maybe they would've gotten a better reception if they had used Justin Bieber?

You can listen to everything from the Galaxy Map music to the Love Theme to Suicide Mission to a Future for the Krogan.
BioWare, please take this into consideration, the music player in the cabin was a good idea; unfortunately, it was stationary. Why not have a personal music player to listen to while you're exploring empty landscapes?
It was perfect for this trailer. It gave a very pleasant feel and kept you guessing what game was being shown at the begining, while you slow realize it was Mass Effect. And lyrics may even be relevant too.
Agreed. It actually troubled me because it's like they're moving away from the mass effect vibe.

Yeah, that... Dicey.

The game made me think of Fallout, which is the only series I've played with this type of track. I'm not a fan of country (is that even what genre Cash played?) so the song is just tonally inconsistent.Imho, they used Johnny Cash to misslead the audience. I asked myself what kind of game it could be, it made me think of the terran campaign in the first Starcraft. Once the N7 logo is shown, the music stops and then the typical sounds of ME can be heard.
Besides, contry music gives an atmosphere of far west, pionners, exploration and adventure. This was a damn good choice for an announcement trailer

When I think science fiction I don't think 1980s (1970s?) America.
Cash is his own genre
