This is DAO all over again with people overreacting to a hilarious degree over a song in the trailer, assuming that "because the song in the trailer was x, the in-game score will also be nothing but x".

And seriously, no matter where you live, Johnny Cash is mandatory to have at least some knowledge of.

So maybe in England, because I was born in Poland, lived in Germany and now living in France and I never heard any country music on the radio or TV, or even about a friend who likes this kind of music. Sure I heard about Johnny Cash once or twice but that's all, today is the first time I m listening to his music, because of Mass Effect.

According to Wikipedia his last posthumous album charted at 32 in France, 13 in Poland, 4 in Germany. And if we're going into anecdotal evidence, I'm French. I've known his music for a while, as have my more musically-inclined friends and my dad. Sure you rarely hear him on the radio, but that's more because his most popular songs were written between the 50s-70s than because he's not famous. I have plenty of 20-something friends who couldn't name you a single Elvis Presley song, but it would be inaccurate to say that Elvis is totally unknown outside the US.

Y'know, I'm from England, I'm in my mid-twenties and even though I'm not a fan of country music, I'm still aware of who Johnny Cash is...

So I don't think it's about living in the US, age or liking country music, I think it's more to do with how pop-culture savvy you are?

Because England was always close to the USA (language, culture, history etc), the rest of Europe not really.

A general statement that Johnny Cash isn't well known in Europe is a pretty dumb thing to write. It could be that you and the people you know, who after all represents quite a small part of the total population, don't know much about him, but millions of people in Europe not only knows who he is but also loves his music.

Where are you living ?

You do know right that Johnny Cash is the most successful country musician of all time with millions of fans world wide?

Nope I didn't know. Probably he wasn't that successful after all...first time I heard of him. I think I should thank ME I guess.

True, there is absolutely no French, German, Irish, Italian or Spanish influences historically within the US whatsoever... all those who think otherwise or that they descend from them, are clearly mad as a bicycle?

Elvis Presley is far more famous than Johnny Cash, even around the world.

Last monday I saw an article from a big French newspaper about the tastes of French people (about music styles of course), it was a pretty big survey and country music wasn't important at all, it had like 3 or 4%.

Lol basically the USA are made of French, Italian, German, English, Spanish, Polish etc, ok we agree on that, but I m talking about today, there's a big gap between the USA and Europe.

Sadly true.. but there's a lot of "Little Italys" and German towns, and Scandinavian areas. Spanish not as much.. there's a bigger Latino thing going on, which is completely different except for language. Spain actually founded the first city here, but the Spanish squandered their influence on America long ago.

Comparing Elvis & Cash's popularity was really not the point I was making.

And we're not talking about the country genre in general, we're talking about one person in particular. Taylor Swift sings country too, she's still world famous. Just because the genre itself isn't particularly popular doesn't mean an artist can't be. Besides Johnny Cash is not just country, he's also been inducted into the Rock & Roll and Gospel Hall of Fames (one of the only artists to do so).

Johnny Cash transcends genres. Plus he has almost nothing in common with modern country.

Yes, Elvis is more well known than Johnny Cash. But even then, he is famous to the extent that it's amazing that anyone can live in the west and not at least know OF him purely through osmosis. He's a significant part of music history, his music not being what currently tops the charts and what all the kids listen to is irrelevant.

And for the record, I'm not a Texan, but born and raised in a small town in Finland.

I also can't seem to understand what people mean by "it doesn't feel like Mass Effect". Such a silly complaint, since we've known since the beginning that this is a fresh start for the series. It doesn't have to feel like old Mass Effect, because it isn't old Mass Effect. Don't ever become game developers, because we need series to be fresh and continue evolving, not be stuck in the past and stay the same. That's one of the bad things about today's gaming industry. Why oh why can't people just get over this already?

Old Mass Effect is done, gone. Its story has been told, and there's nothing Bioware can do with it thanks to the endings. Instead of consolidating player choices further for the sake of a canon, which we all know people would crap on it all the same if they did that, they're going to let dead horses rest and try to do something new. If you don't agree with it you can simply not play it, but try not to hold the series back or expect Bioware to hold it back to satisfy a small minority.

Also lava tornadoes. How can you not love lava tornadoes?

                                                                                              <<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>

New or old, it is still the Mass Effect universe. Some continuity is necessary to convey this to the gamer. Music is one easy way to do so. N7 logo, weapons tech, having some familiar aliens another way.

The decision in the promo to:

1. Start with a desert planet

2. Play western music

threw me off, for sure. I believe it was intentional. Sure got your attention. No? Certainly a reaction.  And, that's the purpose of a promo/marketing 101.

Besides, This is a cinematic promo video, representative of the final game but it is not part of the end product. Bio made sure that the DISCLAIMERS were clearly visible, Acknowledging, perhaps, the marketing mistakes made  for DAI.

The "leaked Poll questions" strongly suggests a dynamic lawless environment. An excellent backgound for story telling and the Wild West intro seems appropriate... for a promo anyway.

Funnily, my Asian relatives like crappy modern country. They asked for Tim McGraw CDs. But no Johnny Cash, sadly.

They also think people in America live in some cowboy version of Disneyland.

If you're talking in the real world, then yes, the cultural gaps still exist between various countries.

But ever since the internet became mainstream, people have become far more internationally aware and "cosmopolitan" since the internet is a medium where one's place of origin, culture and background are completely irrelevant. That and the access to more information means that a lot of people are aware of people, music or events they otherwise would not have heard of otherwise?

See, this is when you buy the McGraw CD and slip in Johnny Cash into the case instead.   ;)

That's where I dislike it. I don't want completely "irrelevant". I like differences, but getting along despite it.

I think a lot are struggling with this.. "Completely irrelevant" is just another type of culture itself (often one that is generic, capitalist, and vaguely Americanized. The face of Globalism), and some are rebelling against it.

But let me get off my soapbox. Not exactly sticking to topic.

It makes me want horses on one of the worlds, though. We should be colonizing. Need transportation... horses. Saloons.

You forgot beer and the saloon ladies.

Maybe they'll take a hint from TW3 on personal recreational fun time. Perhaps even a humorous and personal "I need a vacation"  downtime, only to find out everyone had the same idea and showed up.

Johnny Cash makes you feel like a "badass hero out exploring the galaxy"?

And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder:
One of the four beasts saying: "Come and see." And I saw.
And behold, a white horse.
There's a man goin' 'round takin' names.
An' he decides who to free and who to blame.
Everybody won't be treated all the same.
There'll be a golden ladder reaching down.
When the man comes around.

Substitute Mako for Golden Ladder and I think he pretty much nailed it.

Oh no, I get what you mean, the differences are still what make people unique and special... but what I meant was, the internet community tends to pull together overall far more often and far better than most real world communities do, since the lack of borders means that nationalism and politics can be forgotten at least temporarily.

You can still be unique and different and work in a gestalt entity, which is often what the internet communities serve as.

If Johnny were still around, I'd ask him to cover the Shepard song, just to mess with people.

+15 Renegade points

You just made me go on youtube, load ME3 destroy ending, mute it and play "Ring of fire"... It was glorious @_@

...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

My 2 cents: As a Firefly fan I say screw techno, sci-fi themes and Star Trek theremin sounds. Bring me some Johnny Cash, Jerry Reed, some Ennio Morricone! Make the next Mass Effect into a gigantic Cowboy Bebop episode. I would buy it with my eyes closed!

I don't know. The theremin sounds were badass for the Collectors. It had the wardrums too, so maybe it was that.

Give me a double barreled Claymore and I don't give a damn if it's a western.

People are missing the point that we're going to be invaders in this game, basically outlaws. We'll have to do what's necessary to survive.

I guess. It seems like they're moving away from it. Looking at DAI, they barely give any nods to the outlaw and "renegade" approach. While ME3 Renegade had none of the ME2 swagger.. it was just sociopathic.
