So... Can Romance Be A Little More Fair This Time?

I don't care how fair it is (for me). People can have a dozen options if they want, while I might not pick anything.

I just like this feature if the character interests me. There could be only one and I'd be set. It just depends. Or two I don't care for much (Liara/Ash) and I don't bother with romance. I thought I lucked out in ME2. Tali, Miranda, and Jack are all cool in their own way.

But this is hard to gauge. They don't know what I specifically like.... it's a matter of chance.

It's almost comical how, in the name of 'fairness', the suggestion to add "two options for straight guys, two options for straight women, and 2 bisexual characters" is a serious suggestion.  You realize that your 'fair' suggestion means that straight guys and gals get three options and gay guys and gals get one option.  All in the name of 'fairness', right?

Let me guess your counterpoint:  "Well, there are more straight people so it's a fair distribution to me.  Forget that this means that I'm effectively removing choice for entire groups of people, I like the idea of having three options all for me so that's 'fair' as far as I'm concerned."  Was I right?

Ha ha kind of, so yeah when you re in the minority you can't claim to have the same power or rights as the majority, politics works like that. Something not fair would be only straight romances and no bi/gay at all, that wouldn't be fair. Having more content for straight rather than for gay/lesb is just normal. The key here is giving something for me minority.

I think it's absolute twattery to think something is only fair if there's a perfectly even distribution. That's contrived. The important part is that full on representation is present, not that everyone gets the exact same slice of love pie.

Actually I'd rather get a game that is fun to play, with good replay value, co-op play and a brand new story with interesting characters. Oh, before I forget, a PC game where Bio recognizes the strengths of the PC's input device controls and doesn't screw-it-up as they did with DAI.

And Oh, again.  Please don't make us jump when exploring.

Straight players can still play gay content.

This isn't politics. It's a video game.

Let me ask you this, what would be the downside of having two options for gay character, instead of one? Straight players would still have more, right? So why limit gay people only to just having one option?

It's true.

I have no interest myself though. It's just untapped content I'll never see. It's the same as not liking some female characters.

Because no one is making the argument that 'straight content' needs to be limited by real world demographics. It's the idea that LGBT people might only be ~10% of the population but Bioware has data that shows that a higher percentage of players than that access that content. So, if we are using 'real world' data, shouldn't we be using the data of who actually PLAYS that content.

Gay players play straight content all the time in most games outside of BioWare that have any sort of romance.  Whereas in the very few games with LGB+ content, straight players also enjoy LGB+ content.  Someone mentioned in this thread that their straight guy friend has romanced Steve in one of his playthroughs.  Straight women will play lesbians, or gay men as well.

I love how real world demographics suddenly matters.  An all female race that can mate with anything?  Sure, why not.  Space magic born out of radiation exposure?  We can work with that.  LGB+ romances?  Oh no, we have to make the rules from our 21 Century culture apply here.

It's just as stupid here as it is in DA.  It's really strange where the realism argument comes into play.

Oh and please, keep using terms like "shoved down your throat" to describe largely avoidable LGBT+ content.  The irony fuels my inner demon.

this is why we shouldn't have romances...someone will always feel shafted so remove it then..it doesn't in the scheme of things really add to the game or the campaign.  I think romances with characters in the game should be in the fan fiction section of these forums, to be honest.

Yeah so if you have an issue with a game feature you remove it altogether...riiiiiiiight....

Seriously I think this entire issue would be solved IF BW makes ALL romances player-sexual. Everyone will be happy, everyone gets to romance the character they prefer and we can finally move on from the entire quotas debate. Is this ideal? Nope. Is this realistic? Nope. Is it the best compromise? Yes it is because it grants the most inclusiveness and eliminate every problem that should arise.

Wouldn't you want to have a lesbian romance with Tali in ME? Wouldn't you want a gay romance with Garrus? Well with this system you can while still mantaining the straight option for other players.

Let's be reasonable here

Yeah, I noticed that. I don't know why, but to each their own.

Maybe it's a stronger inclination to roleplay. I like roleplaying, but I never quite remove myself from a character. So I tend to gravitate to things that I (the player) care about.

It's not even the 'shafting' that I'm annoyed about. Sure, I'd be annoyed and I'd complain, but I'd come back for more anyway. It's just the kind of relationship I have with Mass Effect.

My issue is 'shafting' me and then trying to tell me it's fair. Call it what it is.

Again, I've put out four different approaches that I'd be fine with. The only one that makes me complain is the one where other people get multiple options and I only get one. Everyone gets one option? Fine. Everyone gets two options? Fine. I get two options but others get more? Fine. See where I'm going with this?

My point is that it isn't a competition.

It's content, everyone can play it. Some people will only play one specific type of romance content (regardless of their own orientation) others will play all types. If you make all types of content as robust as you reasonably can then you stand a good chance of making sure that all of your players have something. Everyone wins, or close enough.

Well, Bioware seems to have a different opinion. Which is to give everyone at least a choice in the romance department (and mt everyone the same choices).

I'd be completely happy with the game if there were no romances at all. Since when are they mandatory anyway? Does every hero need a partner?
