I am not in a romance thread, I am not in a romance thread, I am not in a...

Oh, look, I seem to have found myself in a romance thread.

So, yeah. Hi and everything.

I like BioWare romances. I think they are...well done. And written. And acted.

That is all. I shall now run away screaming, looking for a place to hide.

If I had an AI, I'd make him a male. Furthermore, since I think English accents are gentler than American ones--and personally more pleasant to my ears (though, I do still love American accents), I'd program him to speak with an English accent. I'm just waaay into men's voices.

So...Jarvis? :P

Anyway, my point is whether the AI is a male or a female is dependent on the person or persons who made it. The only reason EDI was a female is because TIM is practically a womanizer and all that BS about women having gentler voices.

Uh-huh. So you can choose a man or a woman, but if you choose a woman, the 'only' reason you did so is because you consider women to be objects. Great reasoning there.

It's hardly BS. Or rather, the fact that people tend to think women have gentler voices is hardly BS. Which is what matters.

I don't know.  Garrus...that voice...that loyalty...that dark sense of humor.

I know, but...

Kaidan is my perfect Bioware romance in other ways. He's grounded and principled, and kind and best of all he really liked Shepard back in a romantic way. I always felt a little bit like Shepard was pressuring Garrus, at least in comparison.

I do love Garrus. He's one of my favorite friendships in the series. And that voice is amazing. But Kaidan will always be default ME romance

After I finish my mage, I really need to get started on Citadel on my current Shep.  I've been trying out Kaidan's romance.  So far, it's been really sweet.  It hasn't been able to top Garrus, but I can certainly understand the appeal.

What part of that was me reasoning that any and all female AIs and VIs are the result of women being objects? The body EDI inhabits only exists because it's what TIM likes. IIRC, he had a relationship or something or other with the woman "Dr. Eva Core" was based on. And the soothing woman's voice was just another part of his ploy to lull Shepard into thinking Cerberus is trustworthy and friendly.

I don't consider women to be anything other than women/humans. And why would I? I'm not into them in the slightest. Great jumping to conclusions, though.

Edit: To be more specific, to me, all women are women. All men are men. All of the above are humans, and should not be seen as anything less. No one is an object to me, and it'd be spiffing if you wouldn't make such wild and hasty accusations about me in the future.

And all still refered to as 'she' in their respective Wikipedia articles. Anyway, that's an inevitable bottleneck when you name ships after leaders and such, given how skewed those positions are between the genders.

Yes, because maritime conventions are weird, but they're still named and themed after men.

I'm pretty sure it's only ships that are so rigidly given feminine pronouns (and I'm guessing it might mostly be an Anglo thing). I haven't found aircraft to be default personified as women, though plenty of them are. For fictional AIs, anything goes.

I gotta admit, this is another creative place to draw the "realism" line.  Weird, but creative.

I'll explain this nice and slowly. I was not accusing you of thinking woman are objects. You were accusing the Illusive Man and hence, myself, of thinking women are objects on the basis of prefering an AI to be female instead of a male. I pointed out how stupid that was.

Is that clear enough?

It's not about making sense. It's romantic.

Anyway, don't tell me you don't yell at your electronics when they don't work like the rest of us.

Hurling a string of profanities at a toaster for not working is pretty differing from calling it "she" and acting as if it was a woman.

Yes. Hence my saying 'I think AIs should be female' and not 'all good writers make AIs female, and if you don't you're stupid and incompetent.' And saying pretty much word for word, this was not an issue of making sense, but a simple preference I think is very mildly romantic.

It's really ridiculous that people are becoming this utterly whiny over such a trivial issue. Why don't you go spend your days arguing to the mods on Wikipedia how awful it is that they refer to ships as 'she' for whatever reason it bothers so much?

I'm not criticising your preference or whining about it, I'm pointing out that things made by men aren't consistently personified in the feminine as you seemed to be claiming they were.

I'm fond of personifying things in the feminine, and really don't have a problem with female AI but to claim they should be female as a rule based on history is just wrong.

But hey, feel free to defensively whine about how you think other people are whining.

Ships both have been historically and currently are refered to as female. That's a plain and simple fact. Male name or not, as I explicitly pointed out and both gave a simple and plausible explanation for.

But hey, feel free to whine about a trivial and wholly irrelevant issue of nomenclature and graciously pat yourself on the back as a dispenser of wisdom for doing so.

Sure thing.  No need to apologize.  Every once in awhile, a lot of posters come out of lurk or semi-lurk mode for what the hell moments such as this.

Thank you. I'm thinking of going back to my burrow with this honestly but at the same time I kind of want to watch, or try to steer it back onto semi topic.

You go on ahead.  I'm usually the one getting things back on topic.

I think I need some more coffee.  I'm also sulking a little bit that my husband has to work tonight.  It's our anniversary, but the bills have got to get paid.  We're gonna spend some dog-free time alone this weekend though, once we finish the oh-so-sexy task of putting weed n feed on our lawn and getting a new little garden fence installed around the flower bed.   :P

@Wild  In a bizarre way, I've missed this threads.  Popcorn, coffee and a lot of folks I love chatting with.  The occasional bits of interesting troll logic and "realism" debates to keep things going.  It's indeed summer on the BSN.

Sometimes it's a little unnerving to realize how many people are silently watching a thread I'm participating in.

Then I remember how often I do it too.
