I thought EDI was created by TIM as a sort of tribute to his long dead friend Eva Coré. And comic book reference...

But it would be interesting if MEA would explore the idea of romance with bisexual androgynous AIs. Or that would be confusing to average gamers... sigh..

I'm going to hold out a little bit of faith in the ME team.  I might not have about a year ago, but Manveer Heir is still on the team and he's talked about things like the "Butt-Cam" and shying away from LGBT options as mistakes the team had made in the past.  I know he's one guy, but I don't think he would have been so open at the GDC panel last year if he was alone on the team in his thinking.

Yeah, i've seen his video. He said good things and I hope the rest of the team gets some tips from him.

I'm still very salty about Jack and a lot of other things with the ME trilogy tbh

I'm hoping they learn from the DA team on this one. I know this is very subjective, but I felt that they have done a better job overall at making the friendships as meaningful as the romances than the ME had done in the past. Exceptions to me include Tali, but I don't think the ME team handled most of the friendships nearly as well, particularly in ME2. All I can do is hope that they listened and they have learned as a team. If not...well, I'm not sure how I'd react to be honest. I'm not pre-ordering the game, simply because I've relearned to wait for a bit after a new game comes out. Patches and the like. They'll get my money I'm sure, but as with the JoH DLC, it'll be a little later than sooner. I bought that a couple of weeks ago, right before my vid card flipped me off and died.

As much as it tends to crapped on, I still think DA2 is the only BW game in recent memory where the cast are one big messed up family as opposed to a bunch of strangers drawn together by a common cause.

I hope so too.

I can't entirely relate, since I didn't play the series until much later than many on the BSN.  However, I do get why you feel that way.  I think we've both talked about this before, but it seems like someone like Jack (who has much more abrasive qualities than most lady companions LIs up until Sera) was made a straight romance to prevent the "butch" stereotype.  Like, "Yeah, she's a badass that can help take down entire prisons.  She takes no crap....but in her heart, she really wants a man to love.  Don't worry, despite how she looks and acts, she's not into the ladies.  It's something new and different."   <_<

This is why I feel the thread isn't just about numbers.  I feel like it's become a lot about the quality of the romances we get, and where we feel they could improve on.  It's also about kicking around some fun ideas too, and I'm surprised to see that this has been a pretty civil conversation.  I'd dare call it fun at times.   ;)

You have an excellent point.  You also won't hear me crapping on DA2.  I have a lot of fond memories of that game, despite the problems I know it has.  They did seem like one big weirdo family by the end, which I really enjoyed.

Here's an idea.

How about no romances this time? Coming from the Witcher 3 which only had very small bit of romance, I noticed that I didn't really miss it. Maybe just focus next game more on the bonds that the squadmates have with each other without resorting to romance.

That way they don't have to worry about who gets what and wether its distributed fairly.

I'm not as bitter, probably because I wasn't around before ME2's reveal.  I found it an enlightening and uncomfortable look into BioWare's past.  I was only familiar with DA's style of romance content (aside from Valen, I ignored BG2 LI for the ladies and I didn't know about Genn for several years) and I was pretty taken aback by a lot of ME's style.  It showed me how far that BioWare has tried to come as a whole with the DA series at least.

I wonder if, because ME was a more mainstream success than DA:O was, if they were using Dragon Age to test the waters fully when it came to LGBT+ content as well as LGB+ romances.  I know it sounds a little Tin Foil Hat, but it's something I've mulled over before.

Someone beat you to it.

http://forum.bioware...nt-do-romances/

A few of us in here have already told them what we think of that idea.

I don't want to get too much into the Witcher discussion, but I'll say that I just started playing it, an I'm seeing a lot of romantic elements. Now, that all might drop off as I continue to play, I'm willing to take your word for it until I see it for myself, but so far

Spoiler

And I'm playing as a male character, with a female LI. Which is fine. I can play that and enjoy it without a problem, but I can also appreciate the chance to play a kickass female heroine with an LI of my choosing in DA and in this series, and feel pretty adverse to the idea that it would be better to let that go, because some people are sick of seeing it discussed.

I'm inclined to think that they simply didn't plan ME's romances out that much rather than there was a cross team masterplan for probing the gaming populace's tolerance for gay content.

I wouldn't personally mind. In both DA and ME I often enjoyed Friendship bonds as much as romance arcs.
That said, I honestly doubt it'll happen. And I'd feel sorry for all the people Who want them.
Bioware just have to find the right balance in Numbers, I think. Eight Are too much.

Oh, me too.  I don't allow myself to indulge too long in conspiracies like that and I know it's very silly.  It's been just a weird passing thought and now that I've posted it, it's even crazier out loud than it was in my head.  :P

If you're a gay mShep or straight fShep, romance wasn't all too fair. The games really seemed to cater to straight mShep and lesbian fShep. (Or bisexual Shep of either gender.)

To avoid what happened with DA:I - which caused massive upset regarding the sudden shift of romance options - maybe romance can just be equally divvied up? Seems like, at the end of the day, that's what everyone would agree on. Well, almost everyone. I know there are people out there who would rather romances just play out in whatever capacity for the sake of the story. I respect that.

But in the end, more will agree that it kinda sucks when options are limited for certain heroes of certain orientations/genders.

You have to understand that while there is nothing wrong at all with being gay,you are a minority of the spending public and the majority of people are not gay and do not want to have this asinine politically correct crap force fed to them.Relationships in games should be subtle affairs which do not detract from the main focus.

You have to consider that Bioware is a business and the majority target audience are mostly heterosexual so most choices will reflect that target demographic

What ever system they choose, i hope they innovate and create relationships that make the player and characters feel darker emotions like envy, jealously or even guilt.

I remember once trying to romance that "pirate ******" Isabella, i call her that because i once loved her, i would do anything for her, i gave her beautiful gifts, spent time talking to her, I even corrupted myself and made a dodgy deal to give her a ship, A SHIP for god sakes!

Then one day we were out on a walk together and we ambushed by assassins, well guess who shows up? Zevran! the gore of this elf, i don't how he survived our previous encounters, but here he was flirting with my girl! and she was flirting back! she then asks me how i feel about it? l left it up to her, next thing you know Zevran and Bella are bumping uglies behind a rock!

Got my blood boiling, and Zevran of all people! i hated them both! rather then simply reload a save game and forbid Isabella to sleep with Zevran, I reloaded a older save game, went back to when i made that decision to give her a ship and reversed it, take that you ******!

I continued ignoring her, showing her hostility at every chance i could, then a opportunity presented itself, and thank you Arishok!

That my friends, is jealousy and my most remembered romance, it ended in tragedy.

Well, this is another checkmark off of my Greatest Hits List.  I get to break this quote out from David Gaider, back in 2011.  Emphasis mine:

http://kotaku.com/57...xuality-balance

To the OP: doing the same act repeatedly and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. What you hope to achieve by posting the same thread over and over again I can't honestly say.

To some of the others on this thread: While an ignorant opinion politely expressed doesn't make it less ignorant, I will say that the behavior of some of you is far worse. Calling someone a "troll" who expressed his thoughts in an intelligent manner and acting like hooligans suggesting if you just throw enough dirt that eventually that person will either go away or the thread will get locked will earn you a ban. No matter the opinion, I think how it's expressed deserves the same in kind. If you can't do that, refrain.

To the issue: I've said it before and I'll say it again-- perhaps a bit more eloquently, since it's apparently of dire concern to some.

The romances in the game are not for "the straight male gamer". They're for everyone. We have a lot of fans, many of whom are neither straight nor male, and they deserve no less attention. We have good numbers, after all, on the number of people who actually used similar sorts of content in DAO and thus don't need to resort to anecdotal evidence to support our idea that their numbers are not insignificant... and that's ignoring the idea that they don't have just as much right to play the kind of game they wish as anyone else. The "rights" of anyone with regards to a game are murky at best, but anyone who takes that stance must apply it equally to both the minority as well as the majority. The majority has no inherent "right" to get more options than anyone else.

More than that, I would question anyone deciding they speak for "the straight male gamer" just as much as someone claiming they speak for "all RPG fans", "all female fans" or even "all gay fans". You don't. If you wish to express your personal desires, then do so. I have no doubt that any opinion expressed on these forums is shared by many others, but since none of them have elected a spokesperson you're better off not trying to be one. If your attempt is to convince BioWare developers, I can tell you that you do in fact make your opinion less convincing by doing so.

And if there is any doubt why such an opinion might be met with hostility, it has to do with privilege. You can write it off as "political correctness" if you wish, but the truth is that privilege always lies with the majority. They're so used to being catered to that they see the lack of catering as an imbalance. They don't see anything wrong with having things set up to suit them, what's everyone's fuss all about? That's the way it should be, any everyone else should be used to not getting what they want.

The truth is that making a romance available for both genders is far less costly than creating an entirely new one. Does it create some issues of implementation? Sure-- but anything you try on this front is going to have its issues, and inevitably you'll always leave someone out in the cold. In this case, are all straight males left out in the cold? Not at all. There are romances available for them just the same as anyone else. Not all straight males require that their content be exclusive, after all, and you can see that even on this thread.

Would I do it again? I don't know. I doubt I would have Anders make the first move again-- at the time, I thought that requiring all romances to have Hawke initiate everything was the unrealistic part. Even if someone decides that this makes everyone "unrealistically" bisexual, however, or they can't handle the idea that the character might be bisexual if they were another PC... I don't see that as a big concern, to be honest. Romances are never one-size-fits-all, and even for those who don't mind the sexuality issue there's no guarantee they'll find a character they even want to romance. That's why romances are optional content. It's such a personal issue that we'll never be able to please everyone. The very best we can do is give everyone a little bit of choice, and that's what we tried here.

And the person who says that the only way to please them is to restrict options for others is, if you ask me, the one who deserves it least. And that's my opinion, expressed as politely as possible.

In a wall of text. Sorry about that.

And I'm sorry if someone didn't get everything they wanted out of the romances-- as I always am. I wish we could do the ideal where there's something for every desire and opinion, but as usual we make do.

For those keeping score, no, this isn't what I was looking for my BSN Bingo card.  I'll let you guys know when it happens.

And yet Bioware's stance seems to be to give everyone a choice (meaning between two LI).
Also, the romances aren't the main focus in any Bioware games.

Agreed.  The fans make it a focus, not the developers.  I've seen a long and thoughtful interview with DG get almost completely ignored in order to focus on two sentences about Dorian being a gay romance.  The gaming sites aren't always a lot better than the fans either.

I want player-sexual back from DA2. And i want all companions to be romanceable. And i want a Krogan companion! You see where this leads :D

Seriously tho, would it be too bad if at character creation you had an option to choose your character's sexual orientation?

I know this might sound retarded, but its actually a very simple solution so that everyone gets what they want.

You just choose at the get go how you want the love interests to respond to you, and that way no matter your sexual preference, you wont have to face things like "OMG that dude just hit on my male character, what is wrong with you bioware???".

You choose you want to be straight, and the game automatically closes the option to have gay romances, and vice versa. Would that be possible? And welcomed by the players?

It could solve a lot of controversy if you just had those options, and also the option to not choose sexual preference and play the game as intended by the devs.

We've sort of already addressed the idea of a sexuality toggle (never going to happen) but I do feel I ought to add- if someone is having hysterics because someone they weren't interested in tried to flirt with them... Well, that's a problem with the player, not a problem with the game.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd happily play a Krogan romance  Bioware games have basically made me realise that my criteria for romance are essentially a nice voice and a sense of humour. Everything else is window dressing.

If you ask me, that ship sailed around the time they introduced Thane.  I don't sweat things like "Furries" in a Sci-Fi setting, to be honest.  Within limits of course (the Hanar would be way too far,) but I don't see the Krogan as anymore non-human as Iron Bull is all things considered.  They aren't my preferred race to romance, but I'm open minded to the idea.

Now, if I see a werewolf LI option for Dragon Age, then I'll get a little confused.

You might be right.. Thane and Krogan are both amphibian-like.

I'd rather this not escalate though. It starts becoming like an arms race... except for fetishes.
