I think that the romance situation is unique since it's the only Bioware game with romances that's been a series that has followed the same PC over the course of multiple games.  It ended up creating an odd situation where it was super lopsided towards the end.  I mean, that graphic says it all.  If we are looking at the total number of LI's for straight male Shep (the most) compared to gay male Shep (the least) over the course of the series (only counting those who unlock the romance achievement), it's 6 to 2.  If we count the 'flings' as well, it's more like 8 to 2.  That's crazy lopsided (just look at how upset a bunch of people got over the 4 to 2 distribution in DA: I between straight female PC's and straight male PC's).  In the case of ME, it's because they kind of built up over time and they neglected one demographic for two straight games.

I'm hoping that this will be worked out in the newest game.  We're not sure that's it another trilogy, but it if is, I'm confident that the numbers will be closer.  I don't care if they are exactly even, but they shouldn't be 3-4 time higher for one demographic over the other.  Once I hear, for sure, that the team isn't going to pull another "The PC just isn't gay, sorry.  Well except for gay ladies, because that's hot.  Only we'll pretend like she's not actually gay even though she's a female romancing a female." nonsense, I'll be a bit more relaxed.

I'm comforted by the dev comments that acknowledge that they made some tacky decisions in the first trilogy when it comes to stuff like this.  And I think they started making up for it in ME3 with Kaidan and Steve (even though a large group of people complain about Kaidan's sexuality and another large group of people complain that his romance is a watered down version of the 'straight' romance and yet another large group of people complain that he's vanilla and boring and yet another large group complain that Steve doesn't count because he's an NPC).  I suspect that in ME: A, everyone will get two options (they might not like them, but they'll have them) and, if it's a trilogy, the numbers will stay relatively similar throughout.  But, I'll feel much better when it's confirmed.

Tbh I found her sort of cute. I have a soft spot for bad girls.  :P The fact she lied just in front of me and tried to escape my wrath...amuse me very much. I wish we had that kind of companions more. Too many good people in our BW game-teams...telling ya.

Really? The majority of our followers in Bioware games recently have been dark or morally grey characters, not genuinely good people. I hope we have more good people, not less.

Humm..

As long as the diplomat doesnt end up like Josephine.....

Or a Field Medic Asari ! Who was on Thessia , so she saw it all and isnt afraid of Bombing while she patch up civilians !

What's wrong with Josephine?

Heh, good one.

Seriously though I think the romance backlog that built up over ME (and analogous plot things) is an issue that needs to be addressed or taken as a reason to not do that again.

I personally would rather Bioware stay away from romances and don't include any romance or sexualisation at all. It is never done well, is always cheap and tacky and takes resources and focus away from better storylines. And of course it always causes a big political hoo-ha, no matter what approach to sexuality they adopt. We are not all adolescents who need to lust after computer characters - please just leave it out.

However, romance do add something to protagonist's own personal narrative. Without that, the game does feel empty.

What's wrong with Josephine?

Hum..I never finished her romance . Up till the Balcony scene...

But I think a romance and friendship should be different . As a friend I could do everything with Josephine save maybe for a smooche I didnt see .

If a romance is just adding a Line...is it a romance ?

As for josephine , she is a Diplomat . I just hope if we get another diplomat A) She doesn't wear some awful outfit like Josephine did . B)She actually do some diplomatic stuff we can see (exemple: trading exchange , right of passage on hostile Alien territory and such) and c) if she isn't a companion , then she get more quest where she is Involved and moved outside of a spot .

Really? Not everyone is all rainbows and sunshine all the time, but every companion/squadmate for several games has a heart of gold buried within them somewhere.

Josephine never went anywhere narratively. Really the only interesting thing about her is her past as a bard in training, and then that tangent was promptly dropped and never mentioned again. She's a nice lady, and attractive in my opinion, but she's a black hole as far as writing goes because she doesn't develop. She's not my least favorite character from DAI, but she's the worst one. She's Bethany Hawke Jr.

I liked her outfit, we see her do those things, and she does.

Hence me saying morally grey, not morally black. My point stands, we barely ever have any genuinely good people. We almost always get morally grey characters who do some messed up things but due to a personality trait people like them, as well as the whole "These kinds of people are cool!" mindset that has existed in human history.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the second part.

I know that people say Kaidan is boring, but I don't care.  I love that guy.  He's my favorite m/m romance in any Bioware game.

That being said, I like Lady Artifice's idea of the m/m option being more 'scoundrel' like this time.  They need to swap options between the DA type (promiscuous, flirty, scoundrels, rogues) and the ME type (nice but 'boring' guys).  Give us the Jack Harness for MEA and the nice guy in the next DA game.

Also shout out to Hadeedak for the gaylien reference.  I'm telling you, it's going to catch on..... ;)

m/m option is always the bloody scoundrel though... Zevran, Bull, Dorian... it's annoying. I'm really glad we got Kaidan as a m/m option because a thoughtful, quiet, intelligent guy would normally be straight in a BioWare game.

I hope to see a "bad ass" f/f option... it's always the pretty/sexy girly-girl (which makes you wonder who the f/f option really is for lol)

Yeah, she is pretty boring; I don't talk to her anymore actually. Her and Bull I just leave to themselves. I almost do the same with Cullen and Blackwall b/c they're so way the frick out there /lazy lol

Too many DAI characters suffered from lack of development though (but hey we got nice shiny environments!) ... probably same thing will happen to ME b/c they seem to be hyping the exploration aspect of the game more than anything, so nobody get your hopes up.

Is Fenris a bloody scoundrel too?

Can't they be both?

Nah DA2 I don't count b/c they made everyone available to everyone, which is why they aren't so tropey. (minus Isabela being canonically bisexual and hence OF COURSE promiscuous, because for BW bi = sex goddess)

Not in ME, though.  In ME, the m/m options have both been 'nice guys'.  I'd like them to swap and give us some space scoundrels and nice fantasy guys.  Swap it up a bit.

I don't completely agree with you, but I do think Bioware has to find a better balance between the story/characters content and open world content.
I remain cautious Though.

I propose a trade because there's been a recent dearth of snarky scoundrels as LI options for straight women.  I will trade you Cullen for one.

Can we make it a three way trade? Straight women can have a male version of Sera, gay males can have Cullen, and lesbian women get Jack.

haha Yes I know, but we all know those four characters were designed to be romanced by the player regardless of the player character's gender, and that's kind of why they aren't so cliche as some other characters in BW games. Plus the only character who makes it plain she's bi is Isabela, and of course she's very promiscuous (b/c promiscuous bi person is a trope the writers fall for again and again).

If DA2 characters were in DAI... Isabela would be bi, Fenris and Anders would be straight, and Bran would be the m/m option lol let's be honest

I mean as far as what I want?

A tough, serious woman who has been around a bit. A slightly more careing Zaeed Masani would be an awesome lesbian option.

But I think it is important to remember that having options and liking them are not the same thing. As long as they have around the same amount of screen time, they count. If an individual wants more precise traits, then nothing can account for the full pickiness of players sexual/romantic appetite.

That's not morally grey, in my opinion. That's just angsty back story. If everyone makes the "good" choices eventually, they're not grey. That implied neutral or at least occasionally moving to the black side.
