I just hope with LI situation that there is still room to see a lot of the character's character still even if you don't romance them, like I wouldn't be too thrilled to see another Solas situation with the Dalish tattoos. Sorry for randomly bringing it up, just playing another game where something like that happens and its a serious character moment that you can't see if you can't romance them which really bugs me. I mean I understand that some things you share with your loved ones only I get that but sometimes the huge stuff or lore affecting stuff I would really like to see regardless if you are with the character romantically or not.

 

This is one of my two biggest peeves about Solas being only for het-female romance. You have this major lore event for Dalish elves, and then you lock it to only be revealed to females romancing Solas? This is a BIG DEAL for Dalish, learning about the origins of the vallaslin. Regardless of how this was him backing out of revealing his true identity to his lover, male elves deserved to have this moment as well.

That sucks. I haven't rolled an elf yet, so I wasn't aware that this was something strictly specific to a Solas romance, which was something I had no interest in. I guess it's just one more reason for me not to bother.

The finished product has pretty much no more sex than DA:I. Between the two love interests, there are three sex scenes + one recycled, brief scene if you choose to visit a brothel.

Actually, in the final battle any Dalish know what the vallaslin are, since is one of the mokery of Corypheus.

 

So, in truth Solas just anticipate for a Dalish character that knowledge. Of course, it would have beed good if Solas gave the chance to take away the vallaslin before he go away post fight to a friend Lavellan.

 

But I must admit I don't find so "terrible" for romances to have exclusive content. Is a little why I play the game with different characters and sexualityes. to Know more about characters, and see content I didn't see in previous run.

And there are things a person may more comfortable tell to someone he/she have a more intimate relationship that to a friend as with Jack.

She have no reason to tell about the shock of having someone love her so much to think of a life together to a friend (expecially with how she is still guarded even with a friendly Shepard.). Is something she felt the need to tell to someone she want to start a relationship. Is the "this is another problem I have with relationships. I'm scared of being so important for someone, of having someone so important to me". Is a theme that is even part of the Citadel DLC.

At least, this is how I have interpreted it. Surely having something more for the friendship path would have been great. Like reading one of her poems together.

 

That said, I think is right to have some content exclusive for romances, and some exclusive for friendships. An "exchange" instead of a lock out. Like in Citadel meeting Jack on the Streep if romanced are kisses and fun with guns, and if friends, is the cute domestic Varren

I agree that it makes sense (and good storytelling) for the romances to have exclusive content, including some very strong character development moments.  Otherwise, what's the point? 

 

However, I have two concerns about it:

 

1.). Giant lore changing revelations, like the Solas/vallaslin one shouldn't be locked behind romance content.  I know that Felya pointed out that Cory taunts an elfquisitor with it anyway, but it just seems like something that is a pretty big revelation shouldn't be given a cut scene moment for (the very restricted group of) people who romance one character and then just a throwaway line in battle banter for everyone else.  I think they could have been creative to have a non-romance Solas dialogue for the rest of the elves to have that conversation that gives the content the appropriate attention, but doesn't remove the importance of the scene for the romance storyline.

 

2.). I really don't want to see the ME2 approach where if you aren't romancing a character, you very quickly hit a ('calibrations') wall with the character's dialogue tree.  It's super frustrating to know that there's a lot more content for the characters, but you can't access it without romancing them.  Again, there should be some romance specific dialogue, but ME2 went way too far with that.

When Corypheus uses it as a taunt, assuming that he can be heard, because battlefield = CHAOS, the Inquisitor can easily believe Corypheus is ranting and raving like a Tevinter magister would about his superiority and everyone else inferiority.

 

I mean, I don't mind there being character content hidden behind romance gates, provided it's not something on the scale of, say, the vallaslin, this moment that provides a fundamental change in lore and should have character repurcussions. More like the story of Isabela's husband - something that the absence of knowing doesn't change anything about the understanding of a character, but still provides further insight into their history. Characters keeping things about themselves to themselves unless they're romanced makes sense. Denying players important lore information unless they play a particular race, gender, and romance? That doesn't.

The ME series has always been a bit more lopsided than the other series. Gay men had almost 3 times more options in the Dragon Age Franchise, where they always had an option, and had an option in a game that came out before ME1.

 

Also, men and women have about equal standing when it comes to options except when it comes to ME. In fact if women only got 1 extra option in Inquisition their amount would be statistically equal not counting ME series.

 

But also the only place where lesbians get more than gay men in the form of liara in the first game. Never mind the several flings women can have with women in the series that are not romance options in themselves, but do throughout the series recognize lesbianism while discounting gays. Out of the 18 romances of the franchise, there have been 3 Bisexual romances(2 women, 1 man), 2 gay romances, 13 straight romances (5 for women, 8 for men)

10 options for men, 6 options for straight women, 3 options for lesbians, 2 options for gay men. 10/6/3/2

 

Compare that to Dragon Age and Jade Empire which came out before ME. 19 romances total

10 bisexual romances (5, 5), 2 gay romances(1 of each), 7 straight (3 for men, 4 for women)

9 options for women, 8 options for men, 6 options for both gay men and women. 8/9/6/6

 

If straight women had only had 1 extra option instead of 2, it would have been 8/8/6/6 and that would have been pretty amazing, even 9/8/6/6 is pretty great considering its only 1 difference between the straight sexes, instead of 4, that gay people are more even AND have way more options.

 

Soo what about ME has always skewed towards less bisexuals and more straight options for guys? Is it the sci fi? The fact it is a first person shooter, or that it only had 1 protagonist?

True, DA always gave gay men options...even if those options were lackluster (ie Zevran) and I still think it sucks that the Kaidan content was cut from ME1.  However, The ME team also...most likely unwittingly created the best gay romance as a result.  As most seem to agree that the sexual tension between Kaidan and MShep, the meet up in ME2, and then finally getting together near the end of everything made the relationship more rewarding than if they had just hooked up in ME1.

 

Overall, I'm not a fan of DA's approach to giving players a bloated list of potential LIs no matter the sexual orientation. I wasn't even that fond of it in ME2 even with my Wh**e MShep play through.

If there were more scene for the romance, I would be with you... but the Solas romance already have only this one and only unique scene, taking away even this intimate moment really make the romance just a few kisses here and there and a broken heart.   all the others scene are just extentions of "vanilla" scenes, there are no repeatable kisses, nor more dialogues, no gifts or mini missions for the romance (finding the stuff for the "perfect date", or the right gift) and Solas is not even present anymore post main quest.

Something like the Vallaslin is probably just an anticipation of more in-depht elven lore incoming. The entire game push towards this.

 

A complete different scene for the non romanced lavellan for the meaning of the vallaslin would have been good, but I would have cheapened a little the romance scene for me. Discovering new stuff playng different romances and characters is what is great with this games, after all. If the romance had more scenes, and dialogues with more intimate in depht, I would not care one bit. But as it is...well I simply how I feel about it.

But I'm one of those persons who have no complain watsoever if a character give some information/stuff to my PC and another don't in that run. Is for this that I make many different characters.

Hmm maybe using Solas as an example was not the greatest thing for me to do that or as per usual I messed up trying to say what I meant wrong. I don't mind romances having exclusive content at all but some things I feel shouldn't be only for the romances the Dalish markings was the first Bioware example that came to mind for it, though I will try to use another example of what I mean. In this game I am currently playing there is a character that is pretending to be male when they are female and no they are not trans from what I understand either. If you play as a male you get to find out and talk to them about it which results in them being a bit more open and happy and participating in a few more things, if you play as female you never get to find that out no matter how good of friends you are; in the reveal scene too when you find that out I suppose I could understand if the character told you but what actually happens is you walk in on them getting dressed and that is how you find out. Exclusive stuff like that I would find annoying. Heck I still find the Solas thing annoying too and in both of my elf playthroughs btw I only got about half of that taunt from Cory though to be fair to the game thats due to a bug that cuts out sound during battle some times but still the tattoo thing was a bit annoying for me to have put behind a romance.

Yeah I still think it should have been more a bit bigger than a taunt after all I'm very sure there are people who rolled Dalish Inquisitors that would have a reaction to that new piece of information. One of the ones I rolled I knew would have but she wasn't romancing Solas so she didn't get to react to it.

That for sure. A cinematic reaction to such truth and a dialogue about it with Solas before he leaves would have been perfect, actually.

Sadly, is not the only quite important scene that pay the loss of cinematic cutscene. Many dialogues and secondary missions could have used some cinematic and a better presentation. Without any kind of cutscene many cute missions/dialogues felt very shallow. 

 

And I want to be clear: if there were more unique scene/stuff for the Solas romance, I would be on the box "vallaslin scene should have not be romance specific". Is simple the feeling that the romance would not have had anything unique that basically make me not like the idea so much.

Personally I think that Solas wasn't as close with a friend Inquisitor than he was with romanced inquisitor so that's why I don't see any reason why he would have told about the vallaslin to a friend inquisitor or offer to remove it. If he would have done that then it would have watered down his romance quite significantly. He fell in love with an elven inquisitor even if it was a bad idea and he tried to fight against it because he knew it was a bad idea but it happened and he couldn't help it. That is the reason why he became more close with a romanced inquisitor.

 

However I agree that it would have been a good idea to give that information to other elven inquisitors as well but I think there should have been some other way to do that than Solas telling about it. Maybe Corypheus at the end of the game was an attemp to accomplish that,

 

Anyway I don't mind that there are romance specific scenes/information.  I think they make the romances more special but it would also be nice that you could have some scenes dedicated to friendships as well.

Reminiscing about past romance arcs, speculating about future ones, comparing the content between friendship arcs and romance arcs in general. 

 

And no shortage of people popping their head in to condescend about how very silly and disturbing they find such discussion to be.
