So I started a post about romances carrying on through the games and began to wonder about how they worked in ME though ME3, and this happened:
GAME - LI START : FLING/DOES NOT GRANT ACHIEVEMENT : FROM PREVIOUS GAME
ME1 - 3 : 1 : 0
Liara, Ashley, Kaidan : Sha'ira : ---
1 d/s female / 2 d/s male / 1 s/s female / 0 s/s male
0 d/s female / 1 d/s male / 1 s/s female / 0 s/s male
0 d/s female / 0 d/s male / 0 s/s female / 0 s/s male
ME2 - 6 : 3 : 3
Miranda, Tali, Jack, Jacob, Garrus, Thane : Kelly, Samara, Morinth : Liara, Ashley, Kaidan
3 d/s female / 3 d/s male / 0 s/s female / 0 s/s male
0 d/s female / 3 d/s male / 3 s/s female / 0 s/s male
1 d/s female / 2 d/s male / 1 s/s female / 0 s/s male
ME3 - 5 : 3 : 7 (+3)
Steve, Samantha, Liara, Ashley, Kaidan : Diana, Javik, James : Miranda, Tali, Jack, Garrus, Thane, Kelly, Samara (+Liara, Ashley, Kaidan)
1 d/s female / 2 d/s male / 2 s/s female / 2 s/s male
2 d/s female / 1 d/s male / 1 s/s female / 0 s/s male
2 (+1) d/s female / 5 (+2) d/s male / 2 (+1) s/s female / 0 s/s male
I simply dropped Jacob and Morinth from the count for ME3 for obvious reasons. Liara, Ashely, and Kaiden are all part of LI for ME3 because you can start an romance with them, but they are included in Previous via the (+x). Though you don't get an achievement for them, Samara, and Thane are part of Previous Game.
Overall: 11 LIs, 7 'Trysts'
I like the numbers of it (not the spread, of course). I think the number of new LI's should taper off towards the end, instead of in ME-ME3 where they started small, added many in ME2, and then dropped a bit more in ME3. My thoughts are that MEA should start with a good base of LI (the 2/2/2 spread for instance) with one or two characters that are set-up for becoming LI in later games, alongside a few totally new characters. Then you could make the previous LI still available to newer audiences in later games as well, so the numbers don't feel smaller.
Mostly, I want the writers to make use of the fact that we'll (presumably) be playing the same character for several games, who interacts with many of the same characters (I hope). That gives them a chance to evolve relationships, like they did with Tali and Garrus (and Kaidan for M!Shep), but with more build up.
