Yeah that'd be really nice. So far none of the non-romanceable companions in either the Mass Effect or the Dragon Age series have been gay or bisexual.

... that we know of. ;)

Some of the non-LI companions speak of past relationships, but that doesn't fully define their sexuality. That Kasumi had a boyfriend doesn't mean she isn't bi.

DATA TIME!!!!! ;)

There have been 47 companions/squad members (not including NPCs in this analysis) in the DA and ME games (minus DA: A since there are no romances in that game).

Of those, 24 have been romanceable.  13 have been straight, 9 have been bisexual, and 2 have been gay/lesbian.

Of the remaining 23 non-romanceable squaddies/companions:

11 have expressed interest in only opposite sex partners (Wynne, Oghren, Loghain, Carver, Aveline, Varric, Vivienne, Wrex, Kasumi, Vega, and EDI)

9 of them have expressed no interest in either sex (Sten, Shale, Bethany, Cole, Mordin, Grunt, Legion, Zaeed, and Javik) - Note that the only humanoid woman in this category is the PC's sister

2 of them have expressed interest in both sexes (Samara and Morinth)  I don't consider Samara a 'true romance' since she doesn't unlock the achievement, but ymmv on that one.

One of them is a dog (Dog)

Make of this data what you will.

Javik is into Liara, he likes her. ;)

EDI doesn't really count. I'm sure she'd go for a female Joker or Samantha, too.

Grunt is straight and very interested in sex. He bought Fornax Special Spotlight: Krogan Edition. ;)

Mordin ... well, there is that Film Noir like story about him and Aria... ^^

I think Aveline might be the most prominent case. Some people invested in that, believing that they were on a full romance path. Then it just runs Hawke through the paces. "I'm charming myself into obsolescence."

I always flirt with Aveline. Yeah, I know nothing will come of it... but it is just so much fun. :D

That's just it, though: in the world of Mass Effect, where romances have next to zero subtlety, you can (IF I remember this correctly) do all of Kaidan's dialogue and cutscenes and easily skip his romance without ever really shutting him down. I never noticed any hints of him being interested without Shepard being interested first, but that custscene you mentioned, I could just be remembering that wrong. If I'm wrong on that, my point about Kaidan is null.

It really comes down to interpretation is my point.  I also imagined sexual tension between mShep and Kaidan in ME, but just assumed it was my gay old brain looking for hoyay where it didn't exist.  Then I remember having a giant bisexual flag in my mind when Kaidan gave his whole "losing you was like losing a limb" speech in ME2.  Combined with the fact that he was also the opening scene character for me since I didn't romance Liara and it was pretty obvious to me that Kaidan was into Shep.  I was really shocked when he wasn't a romance option in the game and just chalked it up to the fact that he wasn't really a romance option for femShep either.  So when he was revealed as bisexual in ME3, it was a no brainer for me.  I was like, "Duh, the guy who you've had sexual tension with for years and who basically confessed his love to you in the last game is bisexual?  Uh, yeah."

Awesome!  Thanks for the corrections.  I totally forgot about Bethany/Sebastian since I've only done one non-mage playthrough of DA2.  And I totally forgot about Javik because it was stupid.  I had no idea about the Zaeed/Samara thing.  Not surprising.

Speaking of Samara.  I do think that she kind of counts for both of the topics that we're talking about.  She is a squad member who will reject Shep, even when s/he overtly flirts with her.  And she's clearly bisexual since she'll do that to both male/female Sheps with the same reasoning, which isn't about his/her gender.  Plus, she's also obviously been with another female in the past since her daughters are pure-blooded.  I'd also argue that Morinth counts as a LGBT non-romance squaddie.  Her lover, Nef, was a woman and it's not like you can actually romance her.  If you try, you get a game-over.

I've never tried flirting with Samara and Morinth, so I was purely going on the 'Romance' page of the ME Wiki which lists both Samara & Morinth.

Sure, like Kaidan only mentions a past girlfriend in ME1 but is actually bisexual. But if the issue is representation, having characters who might be gay/bi but only ever express interest in people of the opposite-sex doesn't really cut it.

I always felt that way about Aveline. Hawke poured on the charm, but could not dissuade her from that damned Donnic. She did get a kiss, though.

I've never tried flirting with Samara and Morinth, so I was purely going on the 'Romance' page of the ME Wiki which lists both Samara & Morinth.

It gets tricky because there are characters who are open to flirting (Parasini, Sha'ira, Morinth, Allers, Vega, Javik), who obviously are not full romances.  But then there are some that are kind of romances, but not really.  Samara and Kelly all fall into that category.  For me, I use the "Do they unlock the romance achievement?" criteria in any games where that's an option.  I know it's not everyone's favorite method (particularly when it excludes their favorite 'romance'), but, to me, it's a clear indicator of who the devs consider to be 'real romances'.  It's why I don't consider Samara or Morinth as 'romances' since the devs didn't code in those lines to unlock the 'romance completed' achievement (well, to be fair, I don't consider Morinth a romance at all because her romance literally ends with 'game over'.  There's no way to successfully romance her without dying).  But it's also why I changed my mind on Kelly.  In ME2, I don't consider her a romance since it also didn't unlock the achievement.  But it does in ME3, so I consider her to be a full romance for Shep.

It's trickier with older games without achievements.  Like Juhani in KOTOR.  I consider her a full romance, but I know some people on BSN don't.  And there's really no good objective material around it either.

He's a pretty good match for Aveline - and yeah, I'm happy for them, too.  I did facilitate them getting together after all.

Just a little jelly.  And having the ability to flirt with someone who was either 1) completely oblivious to it or 2) recognized the flirting but chose to ignore it was a fun addition to the game.

It would be pretty neat to have companions or crew mates who would be compatible with you sexually but just aren't into you personally. Maybe you could flirt with a scientist all the time and despite that she falls in love with someone else.

Actually, I really, really want a game where things don't go the way you want, where you get rejected by a few possible LIs.

Jack is sort of this, if you're playing FemShep. She explicitly states that she's been with women in the past, but isn't currently in the mood for women. Which was...very depressing, considering she's my favorite romance option ever.

Using the achievement unlock to determine who is a full romance is probably the best way to go, though I do feel it can be a bit arbitrary. For example, given the amount of content the Sebastian romance gets, I wouldn't have been surprised if it hadn't been considered a full romance by the game (and I'm not just talking about the lack of sex scene - I romanced him during my last DA2 playthrough and spent most of Act 2&3 wondering if I was actually locked-in because he had none of the extra content the other LIs get, like comforting you after 'All That Remains', getting kidnapped in Act 3 etc.).

Now I'm wondering, does 'romancing' Samara, Kelly, Allers trigger a jealousy conversation if you're already romancing somebody else or do they just ignore it ?

Well, Jacob is the hottest human Guy that has ever been on the Normandy. Can't really blame her.

And I say that as a straight Guy myself.

Another thing I think could be a blast - to walk into a club and find one of your squaddies - or perhaps some other NPC you've met -  in full drag.

Well, I think it might be fun because I enjoy drag shows.

(but considering the way some people might react, maybe it'd be better not to go there.)

I internally label them under

Lagniappes- Kelly in 2, Allers, Isabella in Origins. They aren't romances as Bioware does them and seem more like a romance mechanic of other games.

Not really romances- Ones with next to no romantic content but nothing is very clear, or no romance was actually initiated. Samara/Morinth (although DLC made it into a Lagniappe), Juhani. Some people count Sebastian, others don't.

Side Romances- Ones that are not given full attention of the others but still are romances, like Jack, Miranda and Kelly in ME3.

Complete Romance- Only really count in a game with side Romances, these are the Garrus/Tali of the universe

..... which didn't actually happen.

It's purely Mordin's fanfiction. And thank god.
