I'll cosign this if only to see that Bioware is still capable of making a game without romances.

As much I want to side with this thread...
You're assuming that the plots are necessarily more interesting.

Oh dear God, don't tell me Bio bought the Harlequin Romance publisher and is now determined to publish romances as priority number 1 with their games! ![]()
Well, Bio is supposedly known for their "great story telling" games

I just want to see an alien double penetrated for once.
I would have thought that all the Phantoms and Banshees would have turned us off seeing aliens penetrated, but something obviously keeps bringing us back.

As long as we can replace them with sex cards I'm okay with doing away with romances.

I think this would be the mature, adult thing to do. It would make for a sophisticated narrative.

Set yourself free, developers.
Give in to the temptation, and let go. See what happens. Let the world see that BioWare can make a romance-free game without it having any significant impact on its success.
Free yourself from the resources needed to do all the extra voicover and writing.
Free yourself from the inescapable rage backlash over every romance detail.
Developers, set yourselves free.

Besides how else were we going to find out how creepy Cassandra's jawline could make some random straight guy gamers...you know the one with the skull pics. Hopefully, BioWare will keep him from shooting up a mall and he can just be crazy and harmless in cyber space.
Brevnau, and then several incarnations of Not-Brevnau. He will return.
Where ever there is injustice in the world, wherever there are wide jawlines and short hair on supposedly female character, there he will be. Proving that his aesthetic taste is inherently superior with hard facts and science, in graph form.

Instead of no-romances, I'd rather see a game where you can only romance Andromeda's aliens. It's either celibacy or sexy time with a bald purple dude with tentacles for arms or some comely Keeper-like lass.

U know, u don't have to have romance in any of their games. It is an option, not a must. If it would be your way, u would remove part of the game that a lot of players actually love in BW games.
So if u don't want a romance, just don't do it. I want my romance.

I could get behind this. Or let an alien get behind me.

Romances play a huge role in the ME games, so it would be a mistake on their part if they did. Romance options give the game replay value, not the only reason but a huge part of it. Also, if BioWare puts another sexy drell or turian in front of me and I couldn't have my way with him I would be a very unhappy gamer >![]()

Or it simply lays its eggs in you, and it turns you into a zombie while you get consumed from the inside.

Dude, I don't live in your "PC" world were Zorblaxians somehow have to be represented just because they're part of that 3% of the species who don't lay their eggs in wild young. #notallZorblaxians.

Without romancing someone in Mass Effect 3 you won't be able to play Andromeda, as you play as commander Shepard's hybrid/human child, sent as a baby to Andromeda. You arrive at the age of 18 with the other Ark babies.

I've always said that the most fertile ground for MEA would be Shepard and Liara's lovechild complete with glowy greenness.

When you attempt to import your save, you get an error message that says, "No dice, romancefail! Go back and try again!"

Yeah... you could actually make that canon. Well, not the glowy green bit but it would be easy for Liara to get pregnant with Shepard's child. She had lots of opportunities to "embrace eternity" with Shep and enough time to have a kid in secret. Even if everyone died by the end of ME3, the kid would live.
Would it be a good idea? Hell no. But it would not be impossible.

Well, the main problem I have with the current romance mechanic is just how unbelievable and silly it is. Having characters fall in love with the PC just because he or she chooses a heart-shaped icon while in conversation or showering someone with gifts seems rather shallow to me. I also don't like how the NPC's have no free will of their own to pursue any sort of relationship with the PC on their own accord. Outside of romance, the characters' personalities are strong and they all have their own goals and ambitions. The only time that's not true is when the romance mechanic takes over and appears to ignore all of that and turn every character that is not the PC into a virtual doll or play thing that exists solely for the player's own amusement.
Okay, that's fair. I don't think the romances stories have historically been tightly written, or well integrated in the plot. I think there have always been flaws in the way the approval system works.
I also do, admittedly, give the Devs some leeway for these flaws. Bioware writing is criticized often. I think there are times where it deserves to be. But I also take into consideration the pitfalls of writing in the genre they're tied to. When you let the actions of the player influence the world, I think you automatically trade away some of the fluidity and tightness of the plot.
Basically, I look at the romances and see flaws, but I also see that improvements have been made. I feel hopeful that improvements will continue to be made.
I do not look at them and say, "Hey, these are imperfect. We should probably do away with them altogether."
I think that's an example of dealing with things in extremes. I'm generally adverse to extremes.

Well, I don't think any real improvements have been made and that it only appears that way when looking at it casually. I believe things have been sorta moved around in an attempt to hide the flaws that exist. For example, instead of giving gifts for approval you now choose an icon for approval. It's not a real improvement because the main problem with the approval system is still there and hasn't been directly addressed. The only thing that's changed is how you interact with the system.

Or, you date a girl, and she ends up cheating on you, but wants you back, and it is up to you to descide if she is worth forgiveness. I would let her burn for a while.
Or, you could add marriage options. Like in Star Wars: The Old Republic. That takes away a lot of the fun -- from my point of view. But marriage could lead to some unique... love scenes.
I can picture many BioWare fans head explode while they read my ideas.
Anyway, I really like the romance options. If a BioWare game excluded romance options, then it would probably lose a full star in my book. I would rather have more emotional dialogue than more generic side-quest.
