A Bioware game without romances would basically be Bioware committing developer suicide.  'nuff said.

This must be true, because no video game without romances has ever been successful.

This must be true, because no video game without romances has ever been successful.

All I know is that I ignored BG2 and NWN's romance content for female players entirely (excluding Hordes of the Underdark, and even then I skipped the romance on all but two of my runs) and still loved the games.  I didn't like my options, so I moved on with my game.  I know I'm not alone either, since that would include some of those players that are gay or lesbian for most of the earlier BW games as well.  Plenty of gay men still played the first two ME games right when it came out, and fell in love with the series despite the lack of romance content for them.

The romances are nice and all, but really it's the friendships as well as the stories that keep me coming back to BioWare games.  I know that you and I disagree as far as romances in existing properties go, but I don't think it would be financial suicide on BioWare's part if they decided not to include them in future games.  I don't think it would necessarily help sales, but I can't see them hurting sales either.  The BSN might whine, but that's the nature of any fanbase.  Big fanbases generally tend to be unpleasable as a group.  Personally, I'd shrug and enjoy the game regardless.

Also, I have to wonder why folks keep putting all these words and intents into your posts that aren't there.  You're not flaming me or others, for instance, if they like the romances and want BioWare to keep them.  I guess the difference is that I respect why you started this thread, and I don't feel a need to flame you.  You don't go into representation and/or romance threads constantly telling people they are wasting their time.  You've stated why you'd prefer no romances, and why you're sick of the fans fixation on them.  I wish folks would stop taking the words, "I don't like something" and twisting into "I don't like you if you enjoy this."

Nat is right. However one might feel about this topic, OP has been perfectly civil toward those with contrasting opinions. As far as I'm concerned, this thread is infinitely preferable to the small horde of imitators, some of which include passive aggressive or outright insults toward those who like and discuss romance content.

I've come to the realization that I'm grateful this thread was the first of these, because it was bound to happen sooner or later, and it might as well happen with one that has a little genuine humor and class.

Not that I'm anywhere close to "liking" the opening post, but I think we should try to respond with respect, and that includes not antagonizing Elcor by assigning them opinions that they haven't expressed.

Plus, in later posts he does an excellent job of explaining why he feels that way, without resorting to insults or anything like that.

I agree with you.  I'm pretty happy that this was one of the first romance threads.  I do agree with Elcor to some extent, in so much that some of the fans have assigned too much importance to them.  I kept trying to do "favorite friendships" threads, a few times.  I know you and dave and a few others posted in them, but they were pretty much overlooked.

That's why, despite some differences in opinion, I don't entirely disagree with Elcor.  It's also why I've mentioned that I would prefer if BioWare keep romances in their existing IPs, like DA and ME, but I'd be fine if the writers saved themselves the trouble with the current new IP that they are writing at the moment.  Also, I know that if a writer doesn't feel like making their character a romance, or generally doesn't like writing them, then they should never feel they have to by the fans.  Contractually they are under no obligation to include romances, and that's the way it should be.

Besides, I don't play these games for the romances.  I enjoy them.  I enjoy talking about them and discussing new ideas, but that's not why I play and replay these games.   ;)

So what you're saying is... I'm not doing it right?

That doesn't sound like me. It must have been the booze talking.

I can work harder!

I think it would be more interesting to ruin somebody's romance in the game rather than having one myself.

You can already do that. Just tell Joker that going after EDI is a terrible idea. ;)

That's not really the same. It'd be more fun to take a romance that has already advanced to the point of commitment, and somehow sabotage it, and perhaps as a bonus, have it be a lead-in to a romance for your PC.

Bah, the fact that there are already so many games without romances is all the more reason to keep romances in ME.

Romance in video games you say?!  What would Donkey Kong, packman, and Mario say about having to romance their way through their games?
