You know I'm not going to lie, romances and the ability to form close bonds with crew mates and party members is the sole purpose I play BW games, no other developer does this on the level of BW. Personally, BW games never had exciting stories that enthralled me, it was always about their characters for me. Characters are BW's strong suit and that's why ME2 was such a big hit. By it focusing primarily on the characters, it was dub the #1 PC game out of a 100 of the best PC games of all time in PC gamer magazine. If BW takes away the ability to bond with party members, then for me there's no reason to play their games because their main stories within their games are usually sub-par and not interesting. Why go to BW for a purely story driven game when there's other names out there that are so much better.
To be fair, romances are only a fraction of the character development in Mass Effect and in my opinion they're the weakest part of it because BioWare seemed to have a hard time writing good romance story arcs(or just didn't put enough resources into it). Most of them are simply: Talk 2 or 3 times, bang in the commander's quarters, wait till next game to repeat process.
Admittedly I think Inquisition did a good job with the ones that I have seen, at least.
As of Mass Effect 3, I'd say I'm also going to BW for solid third person shooting combat with abilities mixed in as well since that game did that very well.
