Only if you insist that the few available LIs are straight - and if you do that, being called a homophobe is not unwarranted.

Wrong. It also happens when you recognize when shallow characters are thrown in just to pander rather than to make a real character.

This suggestion seems downright counter-intuitive.

What's Bioware's selling point? What makes them stand out in the gaming world? In the RPG market in particular? It isn't plot and setting, I can tell you that. They're not particularly great at either of those things, and in the great wide Internet most would seem to agree CDPR and Obsidian are better at it. What really makes their games recognizable in a crowd is the ability to customize your avatar and use it to interact with a cast of likable companions. It's like growing to love a character in a book, only that this time you get to interact with them firsthand!

Romances have been around all along, and it's a pretty big aspect of that. It would almost feel strange if the PC could form any sort of relationship with his or her little circle of friends except romantic ones. Removing romances would be suicide for Bioware, because outside companions they don't got a lot else to sell. I think David Gaider put it quite well when he said that before they even could think about doing that they would have to find something else to replace it. Seeing Bioware's track record with innovation (e.g. every time they try it they screw it) I think we have ways to go.

Bioware's strength is writing good characters. That isn't limited to romantic relationships. People love Wrex and Mordin, yet they are not LI options. You're right that romance options are now expected from Bioware, but that doesn't mean that they would need to replace romance with some novel gameplay or story mechanic. The "replacement" is simply deeper character development, preferably for the protagonist for once.

Some of the recent romance related threads on the front page of this section have lifted my sympathy for the "we talk about romances too much" sentiment to unusual heights.

I wouldn't oppose playing as an asexual. The whole 'boy meets girl' scenario has been done to death.

Obsidian did this (basically) in KOTOR2, because your "romance options" were basically "romantic friends" rather than actual romances. AND IT WAS BORING!!!

You can still play as asexual when they write romances, though.

Plus, being asexual doesn't mean you aren't interested in romance. It just means you aren't interested in sex.

They still push romances in your face though. I dont even want to see the option in the dialog wheel.

"Romance" without sex sounds hella boring tbh.

Not interested in either. They should let us choose our sexual preference in the character creator.

Robot Chicken Watchmen Clip

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the above clip is NSFW.

I dont even want to see the option in the dialog wheel.

With a couple of exceptions (Kaden and Jacob come to mind) I honestly don't think I've ever felt like the romance was overly pushy. And in both those cases, I would say the issue wasn't the romance being obvious, but rather the opposite. Innocuous (or at least borderline) dialogue options would kick start the romance without warning, which could certainly be annoying.

wow I had no idea all I had to do to keep guys from hitting on me was to register as 'gay' with the powers that be

would've saved me a lot of grief as a teenager

It would seem that your chosen playstyle has been supported in every game that has included romance content, then.

In any case, sticking such a thing in the character creator is stupid, unless you're choosing all sorts of other aspects of your characters personality with a toggle, but that would also be stupid. This stuff should emerge through conversation and interactions within the game.

Further feeding seems inadvisable. I have encountered this person little, yet already they seem like someone few would appreciate in their company.

You didn't pay enough attention to the character creator then.

Does pushing romances in your face count as a drink or do they have to be gay romances

'Girl meets turian' scenario hasn't.

Maybe I do, maybe I don't, and maybe the Krogans don't need a cure for the genophage.

Life isn't a video game. Of course, you know that already. But I get the joke...?

In my case it would be 'Girls meet Turian', but I digress.

apparently not

so, how about this: implementing a toggle for this sort of thing would add complexity to the game without any payoff to the vast majority of people, nor would it meaningfully impact equality

the solution to 'I don't want to see that in the game' is to not pick the option: this is the same with romance as it is with other things, like moral choices

just as it'd be really goofy to say 'how dare you implement the ability to be pointlessly evil, you should make a toggle, I don't want to see those pixels'

the toggle is the dialogue, and if you have trouble ignoring an option in the dialogue wheel that you don't want to take but which doesn't actually affect a playthrough when you don't pick it that's a problem on your end, not the devs'

Why, because those posters either didn't read the OP or didn't comprehend it?

did you read all of the now 875 responses and categorize them into one of the either two groups you mentioned?

honest question is honest.
