From what I understand, we still don't know for sure if this takes place before or after ME3. If it takes place after ME3, you have to consider synthesis as non-canon if the Milky Way races aren't synthesized. And if it takes place Pre-ME3, and we were able to go to another Galaxy, you gotta wonder why escaping to that galaxy wasn't an option? Assuming we can go to another Galaxy Pre-ME3, why didn't we just do that during the Reaper War, and blow up whatever method of transportation that takes us there behind us, so the Reapers can't follow behind? I mean, sure the Reapers could FTL there, but I imagine another galaxy is so far away, that they'd never be able to reach us without killing themselves from power loss.

Who is we? Certainly not most of us considering BioWare said:

"While we aren’t ready to go into too many details just yet, as you saw in the trailer and can tell by the name, this game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy. "

just yesterday.

Presumably because whatever means of transportation made it possible had to limit the number of passengers (leaving most of the galactic population to die), be kept absolutely secret from everyone lest the Reapers discover it, and Shepard wasn't invited.

And the Reapers apparently don't need to discharge to their drive cores, so they theoretically could cross the gap, it would just take 250 years or so.

I missed that part. So if it takes place after, then I guess my comment still stands. If Humans and Krogan aren't synthesized in ME:A, then Synthesis is non-canon.

My tinfoil hat theory is:

The races in Mass Effect 3 sent this space colony in cyro chambers to the next galaxy during the Reaper war in case shiz went really bad. Good luck out there when you wake up(in 23434343 years or whatever), and if we're victorious we will come find you yada yada yada. But since space is really big they haven't found them. The old technology you see in the trailer is actually from the species of the Milkey Way searching/colonizing the galaxy, but they got wiped out or something.

The game takes place long after.

We don't know when the journey to another galaxy takes place, it could have happened long ago, which would explain the upgraded appearance of the armor.

Yeah, that might work. A way to get into the future, with neither being affected by the ending.

Along the lines of goofyominvore -  I also believe this was either

1) The fledgling attempts at colonizing the Andromeda Galaxy just before the Reapers arrived and these survivors were cut off.

Or 2)  These are refugees from a devastated Milky Way (I believe the original name had "Ark" in it) - the Reapers won and cleansed the Milky Way but people survived (thanks to Shepard?) and fled to the Andromeda Galaxy.

It is so painfully implausible that the force of Reapers we saw can police the entire universe.  Even the "next galaxy" in a 3 dimensional space makes escaping completely believable.  Either the Reapers were a "Milky Way Galaxy" thing regardless of their claims (far more believable even if totally insane) - or they visit a galaxy every bajillion years to cleanse it. Yes, bajillion.

Perhaps the newcomers found the "Andromeda Citadel" set up by the Reapers... and have either deactivated it, scuttled it or simply quarantined it so that Reapers never bother visiting the Andromeda Galaxy again?

Not necessarily. They could have left to Andromeda before the Crucible was used.

EDIT: oh wait I just saw that someone pretty much told you the same thing, sorry.
