I am genuinely curious as to why these games are held in such high regard, the mere mention of these games are met with almost universal praise and critical acclaim that I can't help but feel there must be something I am missing about these games.

Half-Life revolutionized a genre that consisted of a lot of Doom/Quake clones up to that point. Especially in the story area where it weaved it into a gameplay in a way that the FPS genre had just not seen before. Half-Life in 1998 does it better than many shooters today do 17 years later.

While the Source Engine isn't anything mind blowing today, it was a pretty big deal back in 2004. For both games it's kind of a case of what they did at the time, although personally I find that the gameplay still holds up for me as a FPS fan. I'll take that gunplay over Call of Duty or Battlefield any day.

Although as with most older games like that, going back and playing it doesn't have quite the impact as playing it at release would. A lot of long time RPG fans tell me that Ultima IV was legendary for what it did, but I play it and go "I don't get what's so amazing about this".

I loved the part where Master Chief was in the game along with Samus Aran and Nathan Drake. Half Life 3 is amazing.

Yeah, but dude, you have to admit that Batman's guitar solo felt forced in.

I think a lot of it stems from how diverse/varied the enemy design and gameplay are. Ravenhome had an amazing style to it. You had a couple vehicle sequences. Sand traps was a fun platform adventure. You got to control Ant Lions and eventually lead a rebellion. All this served to keep the gameplay varied throughout the experience.

I'm a huge Halo fan boy but take something like Halo: Reach. What do you start with? Killing Grunts, Elites, Jackals, etc. What do you end with? Killing Grunts, Elites, Jackals, etc. After several hours it does feel redundant. I think Half-Life 2 does a great job of cycling through enemy designs that keep the gameplay varied.

To be honest I never understood why the Half Life series is held in such high regard, I never actually managed to complete Half Life 2 as it was so incredibly boring, felt more like Valve trying to show off their physics engine than a game meant for entertainment purposes.

Not sure why people are hanging out for Half Life 3

In the interest of full disclosure I never actually played the first Half Life

I guess you had to play it in 2004( and be a fps fan) to understand why it was so praised. Just go read some 2004 review of the game.  Now if we talk about having an opinion. Well I could copy-paste your text and use it for a game you love that I don't.

The real hold up is that Gabe wants to get Ethiopian thin before HL3 get announced.

Devs today could still learn one hell of a lot about level design playing HL2 and especially the later episodes. The HL2 ep2 defend the base from the tripods is still probably my favorite ever action set piece/level.

Very annoyed they seem to have abandoned the story at the point they did.

Gaben III will make the game, actually not listening to his father's and grandfather's last wishes.

Whoa hold up there cowboy, what is this ****** for tat? I merely asked why the Half Life series is held in such high regard, I had no idea asking such questions was akin to punching your sainted mother in the mouth. Not looking to fight you, just looking to sate my curiosity.

I get that for it's time the physics engine and graphics where probably pretty impressive, but from a gameplay point of view apart from a few physics puzzles that weren't so much meant for fun but rather a way to say "hey look at our shiny new physics engine" I don't really see what was so special about it, to me it was just your standard "mow down a bunch of mooks on your way to the checkpoint" FPS, sure it may have refined the graphics and physics engine (perhaps even shooter mechanics? going by other peoples claims here as I don't see how it does) for it's time, but the bottom line is I just did not enjoy it, the gameplay did nothing special and did not find the story particularly compelling either, to me it was mostly an exercise in going from point A to B where folks praise Gordon Freeman as their lord and savior then send you on to point C.

Don't be foolish, Gaben's seed only allows for a second Gaben who will end up being infertile as to prevent a 3rd from possibly existing.

Half Life had atmosphere and understood that a story is best told through the environment you interact with as opposed to over usage of cutscenes -- It's approach to less linear sprawly environment to explore only complimented the atmosphere. Black Mesa is an excellent remake of the first game that captures what was great about it. It's also not a shooter where you can just blast everything -- Every fight needs to be fought carefully and clever as your health doesn't magically recover by leaning up against a dustbin or something.

All in all -- I'm not gonna lose sleep over it never arriving but it was a good shooter and Black Mesa manages to recapture that greatness about it.
