Having read the first Romance thread on the game I had a few thoughts on my mind that really bothered me, so I had to vent somewhere.
My biggest hope is that not every character is turned into a bisexual/playersexual. I really want every character to have their own preferences, which adds greatly to their story. Turning everyone bisexual would not only water down the romance, but it would be a path that is irreversible. After going down that route, it could never be changed without causing a complete SJW outrage.
My second hope is that NPC romances like Tali and Garrus will pop up and apear between most characters that player is not pursuing. Or even off-ship romances, having certain characters married, or in relationship during mission, or finding love in a certain port or over the extranet, and sharing their concerns and stories with player, and player having a chance to get them to cheat on their partners with Newshep.
Not railroading every end-character conversation into a Romance is another one. Have flirting be a separate part of regular conversation, and going down that route will lead to romantic involvement between characters. Make the relationship something initiated by Newshep, rather than something the NPC will ask you on its own if you talk with them enough times (will talk on that more)
Developing and growing relationships trough more than conversation.
While talking is all nice and good, I felt it needed more special things. Have the relationship grow by Newshep and R. Interest doing stuff together. Inviting them for a drink, taking them out to a nightclub or vid, a lot can be integrated from the Citadel DLC into regular game to create more organic feeling relationships.
And last but not least, have them express their feelings at a pace dependant on players interaction with them rather than what mission is the player on now. Have them kiss sometimes, or hug or hold hands or express concern for each other. Let the sex be part of romance, not end goal, hapening around mid-game if the player interacts with the NPC a lot etc and let it happen more often or less often depending on player choices, conversation and interaction. (Good example, Liara in ME:2 Shadow broker DLC. It felt so natural and fluid that on my first playtrough of the DLC, even though I wanted to Romance Tali, I chose Liara, because I was carried by a moment.)
Cheers, and thanks for reading ![]()
