Having read the first Romance thread on the game I had a few thoughts on my mind that really bothered me, so I had to vent somewhere.

My biggest hope is that not every character is turned into a bisexual/playersexual. I really want every character to have their own preferences, which adds greatly to their story. Turning everyone bisexual would not only water down the romance, but it would be a path that is irreversible. After going down that route, it could never be changed without causing a complete SJW outrage.

My second hope is that NPC romances like Tali and Garrus will pop up and apear between most characters that player is not pursuing. Or even off-ship romances, having certain characters married, or in relationship during mission, or finding love in a certain port or over the extranet, and sharing their concerns and stories with player, and player having a chance to get them to cheat on their partners with Newshep.

Not railroading every end-character conversation into a Romance is another one. Have flirting be a separate part of regular conversation, and going down that route will lead to romantic involvement between characters. Make the relationship something initiated by Newshep, rather than something the NPC will ask you on its own if you talk with them enough times (will talk on that more)

Developing and growing relationships trough more than conversation.

While talking is all nice and good, I felt it needed more special things. Have the relationship grow by Newshep and R. Interest doing stuff together. Inviting them for a drink, taking them out to a nightclub or vid, a lot can be integrated from the Citadel DLC into regular game to create more organic feeling relationships.

And last but not least, have them express their feelings at a pace dependant on players interaction with them rather than what mission is the player on now. Have them kiss sometimes, or hug or hold hands or express concern for each other. Let the sex be part of romance, not end goal, hapening around mid-game if the player interacts with the NPC a lot etc and let it happen more often or less often depending on player choices, conversation and interaction. (Good example, Liara in ME:2 Shadow broker DLC. It felt so natural and fluid that on my first playtrough of the DLC, even though I wanted to Romance Tali, I chose Liara, because I was carried by a moment.)

Cheers, and thanks for reading :)

It'd be nice to have characters established as having full lives of their own.

Swooping is…problematic.

With these romance threads, I have to wonder if things like the Fishquisition could make a come back.  That came out of a very stir-crazy time before DA:I's release, when folks were still wondering what the final LIs were.

Fish Effect?  There was a Muppet and Disneyquisition, so Muppet Effect and Disney Effect instead?

Bioware has stated they have no intention of using the playersexual route when it comes to romances again.

Please no. That thing ruins romances with the characters involved for me. Not that I think they should only love the PC, but rather the couples are usually good together so I feel terrible whenever I try to romance one. Things like a non-romancable follower forming a relationship, like Aveline marrying Donnic in DA2, would be fine though.

I'd rather have the player initiate it with some LIs, and for other LIs to try to initiate it with the player. For some characters it makes sense the player makes the first move, and for others it makes sense that the characters would make the first move.

Yes, I loved the date scenes in the Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC.

Agreed on a more fluid romance and a variety of acts of affection shown. I would also like it if sex wasn't a mandatory part of the romances, but either be optional or that part of the relationship left ambiguous.

You're welcome. ^_^

Yes, but if enough people demand it it could change in MEA2 like Kaidan was changed.

I dont agree with that. With what I am proposing you will be able to flirt with the character early on, rather than wait for a certain mission where they state interest in you, so you wont ruin their relationship.

I agree, but I still think that should depend on wether or not player flirted with the character. (so standard conversation circle, paragon, neutral and renegade on right side, investigate on middle left, and flirt on bottom or top left, which takes you down a flirty path with that character. I dont see why a character to whom I have never expressed would come at me with "wanna date" or something to that effect)

We agree there

I agree with it being optional but dont with it being left out completely, Its a natural part of relationship, but as said, shouldnt be the main reason for it. Expanded conversations, interesting npc-dialogues and actions and more should be the reason for romancing someone, rather than a cutscene before the final mission

People didn't "demand" that Kaidan was bisexual.  People asked for m/m options.  In order to make sure that gay guys got a choice at some point in the trilogy (keep in mind that gay guys were the only main group that didn't receive any options in the first two games, Kaidan was revealed to be bisexual in ME3.  I've got three thoughts on this:

1.). It's pretty clear that they tinkered with the idea of a bisexual Kaidan earlier in the series, so this didn't come out of nowhere.

2.). Nowhere in the game does Kaidan ever say that he's straight.  People assume that he's straight because he doesn't romance male Shep in ME1.  It's the incredibly naïve idea that a bisexual must immediately express their bisexuality or it's a retcon, which is just silly, to be honest.  But the romantic-tinged dialogue still exists in ME2 ("Losing you was like losing a limb...." seriously, what straight guy says that to his male friend?).  It's perfectly realistic (the word that people love to throw around when it comes to LGBT romance) for a bisexual guy to have a preference for one gender over the other (Kaidan clearly prefers females given the early fem Shep romance, the Rhana story, and his attraction towards Asari).  It's also perfectly realistic for a guy to develop feelings over time.

3.). The only other options would have been to either short change gay guys yet again by only giving them 1 NPC romance for the entire series (unacceptable) or by adding in yet another romance option, which leads to issues around word budget and time resources.  None of the options are ideal so they chose one that worked for them and went with it.

Basically, Kaidan was probably 'changed' into being bisexual at some point, but who cares?  It didn't ruin his character in any way, in fact it actually made him more complex and realistic as a character.

I liked reading your ideas OP, though for mental health reasons I will not comment on your first point. I do hope the romance system, and basically the relationship system between PC and NPC as a whole, will feel more natural. Moreover I also really like the idea of people finding one another throughout the galaxy/story without influence of the PC. They did this in ME3 with Tali and Garrus, which was a very pleasant surprise IMO, but in other Bioware games I just feel like the NPC's are either getting it with the PC, or dying alone.

That's the opposite of my hope. I hope they go the route of a smaller number of bi-sexual/playersexual onto which they can focus deeper content, rather than gating off characters and expanding numbers.

David Gaider once joked that if they put mailboxes into their games, someone was going to want to romance it.

Please allow same sex romances for male and female protagonists, right from the start, as well as straight romances. I was disappointed to see how my Male Shepard had to wait until the third game to finally romance Kaidan or Steven Cortez.

I agree that there should be gay, lesbian and bi characters of course. Hell, they can add a transexual if they want as well. But I disagree that everyone should simply be bisexual

What's the huge commotion about romance options? The game is about space exploration, not date simulator 2400

Bioware...just work on the campaign...do not focus on romances just to appease the politically correct.  That is what should be your motto throughout this franchise.  Awesome game > video game romance.

Pretty much, prioritize story and lore over romance and if that means less romantic content, good.

There should be none. Biower should then harvest the fanboi tears and use them to quench the thirst of all the poor children in the Sudan.

Considering that tears are salty, it would need distillation first.

It can be both.

Bioware games have romance subplots. Since I can't think of more than like, 2 other games that do that (and not nearly as extensively as Bioware), It'll continue to be important to most players.
