Bringing custom characters into the keep from the old social profile does not always work. However it doesnt matter anyway.

You'll need to recreate your choices in the Keep anyway so it doesn't really matter.

And it's like five minutes of your time. Anyway, if you do it manually, you will be reminded of your choices you might have made like years ago.

Could they simply add "import" of a character? If it fails to find it? There is no option for searching of files if it would be in a different directory...

Unfortunately, there's still some issues with uploading heroes from DAO and DA2 into the Keep, with a number of possible causes. Since the Keep is multi-platform, and reads data from a number of older servers, it's not as simple as reading data from files on your disk; if we had gone with that approach, we'd also have other issues for some users, such as those who lost their old saves or who couldn't access them for other reasons.
If your hero doesn't import, the best solution is probably to select the "default" hero with the same gender/class/race/origin story and use them instead - if you'd like, you can change the hero's name, biography and portrait by clicking on those elements, and set them to match the hero you used in the actual game. Other than how the data shows in the Keep, there's no difference between a custom or default hero in either the Keep or Dragon Age: Inquisition, so it won't impact your gameplay at all.
