It's true, but that's part of the character too. He's supposed to be questionable in some light. He's the "Dark" Knight.

There's always been a running theme that he's just as sick as the people he locks up in Arkham too. And the main guy who calls him out on it is the Joker. He sees a kindred spirit. Well, that, and Catwoman.

the disturbing thing that really urks me is how people praise batman as this amazing character when hes got so much money and does so many morally questionable things. Id like to point out that one of our generation's heroes is a mentally unstable billionaire.

what does it say about us when we see having money as heroic?

seriously though, if money is what makes heroes nowadays, its time we took a long hard look at what a hero really is.

He is the ONLY well-known superhero (besides Tony Stark) that can hang with supers despite his lack of powers. This is achieved by sheer force of will & discipline

Your point is invalid

i disagree with batman as a concept. He tortures people and beats up the mentally ill while dressed as a giant bat. His power comes from money and his uncanny ability to have mastered dozens of multiple disciplines enough to be considered a master in them all before he hits his 30s. Hes a revenge power fantasy.

Your opinion is invalid.

Go watch Captain America or Superman then.

To be fair, it's not just "nowadays". The character has been around for 80 years.

I think he's just made rich because it's the practical explanation on how he pulls any of it off. I don't know if there has to be a real commentary about that. I think it's just borrowing from Count of Monte Cristo, who did a similar thing. A prototype for a lot of comic books, I think.

But I agree with you that he's kind of twisted.

I like to think this is the hardest decision Batman has ever had to make.

That's a funny way to say dangerous psychopaths.

Some of them are.

I think he's nicer to the ones that are probably more like him (like this episode I watched recently where he was trying to help Harley. And there's Two Face as well).

I never watched it or better to say didn't find it.

It seems it's not much better than Batman and Robin based on various ratings.

Yeah, it's like Batman and Robin... it just plays up the hammy stuff like the old tv shows.

I think they both had good casts though... in a different type of movie, they would have looked better.

I'd argue this is a false equivalency. "Our generation loves Batman. Batman is a rich hero. Therefore, being rich is heroic".

That aside, Batman is one of my favorite characters, but I often feel that the writers neglect one of the more obvious criticisms of vigilantism: people are fallible in their judgment. While Batman is deranged to a large extent (hence the Joker comparisons), he's rarely shown to abuse his power on the innocents the way a more obvious vigilante might. He doesn't kill and while he may torture/break into people's houses, the vast majority of the time they're hardened criminals.

I would love to see a take on Batman that does a better job of the fact that he could make mistakes, torture someone innocent for example, which often his super special hero technology does not allow.

This was a awesome comic. Frank Miller had a great take on Batman.

Man, I despise the Dark Knight Returns.

The art style was horrendous and everything past the first issue (along with the Joker sequence) was incredibly bland.

I did absolutely love Year One though.

Frank Miller was also the guy who created some of the worst DC comic/and Batman stories, so I wouldn't say his take on Batman is great. What I liked about The Dark Knight Returns was how it managed to showcase the baggage and development of both Batman and his rogues gallery as they've gotten old. Year One was the best one as it felt like a level-headed and well-structured story to showcase the transformation of Bruce Wayne to Batman, how he'd evolve and conquer his mistakes and fallbacks.

Jeph Loeb and Paul Dini are my favorite Batman writers though.
