Per some discussion that came out of this thread (for the record, I liked the Cash song in the trailer just fine), I wanted to make this feedback/request its own thread and gauge the interest in the idea.

If its not too late in development, could we be given an option to listen to music  while walking out and about? I don't mean background music, but an in-game playlist, ala an in-suit radio? It could include select songs from the previous ME games' soundtracks (Vigil, Suicide Mission, Lost Without You, etc.), as well as great licensed songs like the Cash song from the trailer!

The human protag will be far from home, no matter what part of the Milky Way they are technically from. Lorewise, it makes total sense they'd want to bring some music along. Plus, we're told characters like Garrus had a "battle playlist" to play in his ears during combat, per the files in the Lair of the Shadowbroker. We've had in-game audio players in our cabins before. This idea is simply that it goes along with us. I guess it could be via our omnitool with the sound routed to our helmets/visors, perhaps?

I'd just want the music to be on a different audio track/option/whatever it is in the Audio Options than the background music so that we could mute the background music and still listen to this, if we wanted to. Bonus points if we get to choose which of the available songs to play and/or can skip songs we don't like when they come on. And those who don't want to use the feature at all wouldn't have to, of course.

The idea reminds me of Fallout and Guardians of the Galaxy and, honestly, I find it very exciting. It would be a cool feature.

EDIT: Some in this thread have suggested being able to listen to the radio suggested here as a radio in the Mako while you are driving around. This would also be awesome.

EDIT 2: Additionally, the ability to add the player's own songs of their choice from their own musical collections to this radio would also be really appreciated, if its possible to do.

Can't you get the same effect by turning on the sound system in the room you're playing the game in?

Yeah. I don't get how this would work in-game. Is the request for them to allow you to upload songs to the game and then have a UI to play them back?

Yep. Exploring those uncharted planets with a neat song would be great. I approve.

Re the song uploading, no, basically I meant have the radio like in the cabin in ME2, but in your suit. So you can listen to it on the fly rather than needing to be in your ship. And you could cycle through songs and they could include songs that came from the previous game's soundtracks, like Vigil, Suicide Mission, etc. And it could also include any songs they're licensed to have, such as the Cash song from the trailer.

If they WANTED to let us pop in our own playlists, I certainly wouldn't say sneeze at it, but that's not what I was asking for. :)

Yes to the UI element thing. A button on your omnitool, a keybind that lets you turn it on, something along those lines.

Not if I'm using headphones, no. And having the music play in a background program might result in a performance hit for people. You could always do this if you wanted and didn't like the music they gave us in game, but the answer to your question is no.

I don't know about the armor, but I wouldn't have a problem listening to AC/DC while driving around in the Mako

The problem is if they make a player in game its going to take resources to run it instead of having other features running in the game, for it was widely reported they had to remove the holster animation in Mass Effect 3 due to memory constraints.  The other problem is licensing of music if you want to play your own music it might not be a problem, but anything outside of what they compose for Mass Effect 3 will need to be licensed for the game.

Hopefully, by the time the game comes out both the consoles will support playing your own mp3s in the background, so it shouldn't be necessary to have it in-game.

@Jeremiah: I don't think they'd be able to top it's use in Saints Row the Third, though.

"I'm Back in Black.....In a bang with the gang
They gotta catch me if they want me to hang
Cause I'm back on the track and I'm beatin' the flack
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now I'm just makin' my play
Don't try to push your luck just get out of my way..

A game like Saints Row wouldn't be the same without the radio-style music, but when you're exploring alien planets a lot of the ambiance is dependent on the sound.  I think this would be appropriate in the Mako or in the ME:A version of the Normandy, though.  I wanna go Guardians of the Galaxy-style up in my ship.

Well memory may very well not be as much of an issue anymore since it'll be nextgen.  Licensing songs outside the ones they've made for the other ME games would be a matter of cost/benefit for them to do. That's why I'm just putting this suggestion out there. I'd be content just listening to the various ME tracks, if necessary. (Though I really do like the idea of listening to popular music as I kick spacebeetles. lol)

For PC Players, if Bioware never does it, I'm sure a Modder will.

But opening your omni tool and selecting it in game is cooler bro.

Modders could mod what songs are played, but I think creating an actual interface would be too difficult. Bioware would need to do that. Especially since this is gonna be Frostbyte based like DAI.

^This. Also, on lower end PCs a background program running could cause performance issues. And, what if you hear something in-game and want to lower/mute the volume suddenly on your radio? Would rather not have to alt-tab.

This.

The other issue is that if the game actually included the ME equivalent of an ipod with modern (20th/21st century) music....most of the bands are artists who are relevant today shouldn't be in the 23rd Century, or whenever Andromeda is set. Most would be completely forgotten. It is modern for us, but wouldn't be for the characters in the setting.

We were told that Andromeda is set long after the events of the Shepard trilogy. Lets say that the Milky Way colonists get to Andromeda on an ark that is able to match the Reapers' speed of 30 light years per day. Assuming they leave during the events of the Shepard trilogy, they'd arrive in Andromeda 232 years later, or during the 25th Century. Lets say the ark leaves in 2186. It would arrive in 2418.

A song released this year would be 403 years old when the Milky Way colonists arrive in Andromeda. How many songs or musicians popular 403 years ago, in 1612, can any of us name today?

With that in mind I'm not sure this would be a good feature to add. Unless the main character actually has a backstory other characters comment on where he/she is known to like really obscure music no one has even heard of (Achievement Unlocked: Space Hipster), it would be feel out of place with the setting.

Well, if it is an Ark idea, I could see them storing music/art/films as well as species. Preserving culture as well as genetics. So, I could see a selection available from the "library" including everything from Johnny Cash to some haunting Asari music.

And we could then choose what music would best work for our current mood and the atmosphere of the planet we're on.

edit: but I love driving with music on irl. also, I could see nostalgia playing a role in listening to music from hundreds of years ago. something to remind them of home. although it may not seem like  hundreds of years to us--depending on how we actually get to Andromeda.

Good idea! My Mako's radio will play Born to be Wild and Freebird, for space exploration I'll go with Pink Floyd. B)
