Well obviously Game of Thrones is a must watch but it seems you already know about that which as well you should.

Other than that if you are into anime then Cowboy Bebop is a must

Good ones. I've watched the Cowboy one (The series). It was very good, but its ending was rushed. Champloo is on my watch list.

Pretty much all good suggestions so far.

If you haven't seen them yet:

Halt and Catch Fire (season 1 on Netflix, season 2 on AMC)

Mad Men

Arrested Development

Boardwalk Empire

Sons of Anarchy

EDIT: And Sherlock!  Duh.

Sledge Hammer! and Police Squad,,,brilliant but short lived cop drama spoofs from the 80's

Rizzoli and Isles - Police Drama with Angie Harmon as a tough police detective and Sasha Alexander as a smart but socially awkward medical examiner

The two leads have a "Felix and Oscar" vibe to them (with Harmon playing Oscar)

Bruce McGill provides solid support as a veteran detective, with the late Lee Thompson Young playing Rizzoli's relatively inexperienced new partner

Young (who was bipolar) comitted suicide in September 2013

"The Newsroom" - Aaron Sorkin's drama about a news show on a ficticious cable network uses real life news stories from the recent past (such as Deepwater Horizon and the 2012 elections) to frame its storylines.

Uniformly brilliant cast led by Jeff Daniels (even Olivia Munn is good here)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll give you my thoughts on the ones I've seen.

The Misfits

I highly recommend. It's nice to see a show with super powers that isn't about super heroes. These guys are super zeroes and that is what makes it so entraining. Larger than life characters placed into larger than life scenarios. The music is a little over dramatic for what essentially is a wacky comedy.

My favourite episode of the series was Ground Hog Day meets Butterfly Effect. That was some time bending madness.

Netflix Daredevil

I can't state enough how surprised I was to find out this show is awesome. I came in expecting garbage but quickly found myself hooked. This show is amazing.

Doctor Who, starting from the 9th doctor forward.

I love Doctor Who. New Who is awesome. Russell T Davies and Stephen Moffat have done wonders for this show. However I'll add a recommendation to yours. Classic Dr Who before the 2005 Reboot. The show has always been awesome. What I love is the fact this show keeps changing. Different Doctors, different writers, different support cast, different musicians, different directors etc.

If watching every episode is too much work, at the very least WATCH AT LEAST ONE STORY FROM EACH DOCTOR.

Avatar: The last airbender/legend of Korra

I loved The Last Airbender. Soooo goood! Never seen Legend of Korra though.

Friends

I loved that show! It's funny. However being a comedy for me it suffers from the same problem all comedies do. The jokes are only funny the first time I hear them.

This thread's going to kill me. I have so many recommendations that I need to contain myself a bit.

If you like crime dramas, detective mysteries, etc., NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, beats British TV. However, there are lots and lots of British crime dramas so I'll recommend a few: Inspector Morse, Lewis, Endeavour. All of them are set in Oxford. Endeavour follows Morse (1980+) in his earlier years (60s) while Lewis focuses on Morse's sergeant who's now a detective himself (2000+). Easily recommend all three. Gently is pretty good too and is set in Northumberland in the 60s. Needless to say, the holy trinity: Brett's Holmes, Suchet's Poirot, Marple.

F***, I recommended a lot and I'm still short.

Science fiction-wise, I'd recommend Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis (the US military visits other worlds through wormholes). There are no other Stargate series, period. You're bound to have a good time with Firefly too which is why FOX (= idiots) cancelled it.

Currently airing? The Flash. Without a doubt my number one, must-watch, show this year. It's more light-hearted than Arrow which is a good thing and at least it's Flash being Flash whereas Arrow has Arrow being Batman. I don't know why Barry's puns are better in Arrow though.

Still haven't had your fill of military? Like court dramas ala "A Few Good Men"? Got you covered with JAG, easily the best show ever. Fun fact: NCIS is a JAG spin-off. Not-so-fun-fact: NCIS never had the decency to invite the JAG actors to reprise their roles.

Animated? People have already recommended great shows like Korra, BTAS, LotGH, among others so I'll direct you to a few I didn't see mentioned. You can add Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei to that list if you want to see Magic Jesus aka Shiba Tatsuya.

That'll be enough for now.

I'll be back.

Maybe.

You forgot Luther. I did too. Watch it.
Also seconding votes for Archer and True Detective.

Decent sketch comedy: Inside Amy Schumer, Kroll Show, Broad City

I also highly recommend The Robinsons if you can find it. Weird British family comedy with Martin Freeman.

And I forgot the very important House of Cards. Either version. I have a deep, enduring love for Claire Underwood, though.

Ah, yes, well, I didn't forget. I watched Luther and found it a tad too violent for my tastes. Not to mention I prefer the whodunit approach.

But do watch Naoki Urusawa's Monster

It has an amazing dub you can enjoy too.

Since we're throwing good seinen anime around.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex + Second Gig + Solid State Society.
