I think that 'fall in love' was Meant for the players. I love Wrex, but I never had the intention to romance him.I read somewhere in their announcement of the game that you'd have all new characters to fall in love with so...maybe resign yourself to the inevitable now?
That doesn't invalidate The last part of your post though.
